I'd like to do this, and if I was going to go through the excercise, I'd try to make a detector that can detect metal at least 12" under the ground. Would more windings with thicker gauge wire accomplish that?

No it is not a buzzer if you talk about PC motherboards, It is just a small speaker, to use it as a buzzer you must use something like NE555 or a two transistors, one PNP the other is NPN and couple of resistors and one capacitor, that's it
I've made the circuit directly but after putting the battery the buzzer only works for a tiny fraction of a second and then doesn't work until I remove it and re introduce it to the circuit. What is the reason for this and for to fix it?
In order to successfully use this detector, you kinda have to already know where the metal is. Simply passing the sensor over the metal won't detect it, you have to stop and hover over it a little, as you can see demonstrated in the first few seconds of the video.

i made that thing myself. kinda disappointed by the depth... its barely good enough to detect wires in a wall. gonna try to change it to a coil with a larger diameter and try it again. maybe that'll help.

If you make more turns in the coil, or larger diameter will it be stronger? Or thicker wire?

Maybe you need a larger buzzer for more sound. I am telling from my experience though

there is on/off switch on PCB, when i connect battery at that time it was in off position, so it doesn't beep.

I see you in the video detecting metal which is 0.1m deep. But i think the metal detector can detect metal which is 5m deep or more in dirt
