Nothing smells better than old books. There is something about the smell of old books that is calming and serene.
It's the lignin. It's a chemical polymer in wood (and thus, in paper). When it breaks down, it makes the paper turn yellow, for one thing, but also one of the smaller compounds it breaks down into is shaped (and thus carries a smell) remarkably like vanillin (the most notable chemical compound found in, well, vanilla beans).
agree the smell of it takes you back in that time
Anastas1786 My librarian friend says it's the smell of dying books. Like rot.
No, I get ya... it's a musty smell and dusty too, with crispy pages - but for some weird reason, old moldy, dusty tomes smell delightful!
P.S. I never thought vanilla - now, I'll be digging upstairs for my oldest books to see if it's like vanilla...
@@Anastas1786 Cool science fact! That explains it well, as I love the smell of both old books and natural vanilla.
i don't know if anyone has said this yet, but there's actually a very similar chemical compound in paper as in vanilla that comes out as the paper gets old and starts to break down. so old books are just objectively nice smelling!
Rowan Alchemist I've never heard that before, how interesting! I guess that explains it :) thanks for sharing this
you're welcome! it's one of those trivia facts that once i learned it, i've had to share with everyone i could.
Rowan Alchemist o
so thats why we chewed paper as kids...
Old book smell is the best, it feels like you can finally come home and rest your old soul, discover new adventures and treasures. It's the best to be able to touch and experience history. Nothing weird about it
You are NOT weird and alone; old books are some of my favorite friends!
Love the 40s/50s style shirts. They are so much more flattering in the sleeve, the yoke, how it hangs, etc. I must get a copy. Thank you for posting this.
Im actually working on a whole new wardens
I may be repeating myself, but you are dressed and look like my mom age 17 working as an inspector on b-29 bombers. She wore clothing much like this, and went to work in the factory during WWII.
mspatti awesome!!
Wow that’s so cool, my grandpa was the missile man on one of the tanks that liberated Prague
That's cool! My grandpa at age 18 was a tank driver for the French/Lebanese army!

You're not weird and alone. Old book smell is wonderful! Love your videos and will be making a few of these blouses. And the romper too. Thanks for posting.
Old books smell is the best!!! And so is your work. 😀
Will it blend ?! ;)
As a teenager I watched a lot of movies from the 40’s. I really like your videos. My mother made my clothes beautifully. I am not very good at sewing, but I did make my daughters first communion dress.
Love the jungle print blouse with the green pants. They look lovely on you. That pants pattern is very nice, I love it and the blouse turned out splendid. Thank you for sharing.
I love your videos on 40s inspired garnments, please do continue to make them when you feel like them!
Ho my!!! I love the fabric you choose! The pattern is still in fashion! I love to see a young woman sew and create her own clothes. Wish I learned when my mom was healthy. I guess, it's never to late! Thanks for sharing! 🌟🌞🌟🌞🌟
Sandra Solaligue-Pérez I am learning to sew at 32 nobody can be too old to learn anything everyday of their life go ahead and learn
Olwen Davis, thank you. I sure will try. 😀
I wish sewing makes a comeback for younger generations. I really like to see younger ladies to sew like this.
Sandra Solaligue-Pérez I learned sewing by watching what my mom and even my dad were doing. My older siblings never really bothered to do the same so especially my sister never learned how to sew properly. She taught herself at 25 when she was pregnant with her second child. Even our now 66 year old mother still learns new things, that's just how life works. You can still learn sewing if you really want to learn! I taught myself how to knit because there is just no left handed person in my family that could have shown me when I was younger. So I learned how to do it like a right handed person would to it first and switched everything around after I got the hang of it. Now I can create patterns other people have to turn their knitted piece around in order to create them just because I can knit with both of my hands.
Sandra Solaligue-Pérez it's never be late for dreams 😊
You are definitely not weird or alone! I love the smell of old books!
I have a bookshelf at nose level that is filled with old books. I also LOVED the scissor sounds. Sweet little blouses.
Never have seen fabulous fabric like this.
Old book smell is the BEST!!! You’re absolutely not alone! :)
Girl. . there are a few true joys in life. . and the smell of old books and antique stores is one of them!!
Old book smell is one of my most favourite smells. You're not alone.
Dear Angela, I discovered your channel just recently and I must say I really love your video's!
I myself are a proffesionel seamstress and I am still learning everyday....Sewing and pattern making is a very complex profession and very undergrated by many. So keep on going! And I must say you really got talent! Keep up the good work! You inspire me with your video's. So very warm greetings from the Netherlands, Europe. 😘😍💕
Love, love, love the jungle fabric. Making a shirt is always a bit of a palaver and takes much longer than simply running up a wee top. I really enjoy your videos Angela. And I would love 'old book' smell more if it didn't make me sneeze.
You are certainly not alone-old book smell is so much better!
what a pleasure to watch a very beautiful person from outside and from the inside make beautiful things and enjoying the process )))) Good girl , Angela, I wish there were more people like you on youtube, thank you so much for the inspiration!)))
I wish I lived a bit closer, I would hold the camera and help you film everything )))
I've said it before, but it is worth repeating: I love these in-depth, informative videos where you work on a single project and talk in detail about the steps. Thank you!
Old book smell is a slice of heaven ☺️
Old book smell is best book smell. I have multiple unfinished poems about it, many started when I was a kid, before I knew I was a writer
Really love the all-in-one lapel/facing/button placket thing on this blouse. Also love how you've stored your hats along that section of wall. Out of the way, but still in sight to appreciate. And yes, definitely, Old Book smell is the best. I buy all of my books second hand and I love the smell and all the stories that come with them, like old plane tickets or love notes or personalized book plates. I love books that have stories beyond the one the author wrote.
You are definitely not the only one who loves the old book smell. :) I love that fabric; I may have to see if my own JoAnn has it.
Beautiful shirt! I love how it looks with the green trousers.
Yes! Love the “old book” smell. My husband and I once did a blind test to see if you could smell the difference genres, and you can! I always recognize an old Stephen King from the eighties. 😉
OMG! I thought I was the ONLY person who liked old book smell! :) Seriously, there's more than once reason I volunteered or worked in several libraries lol
Old book smell is the best! Also the look at the end with the blouse and the green pants makes me think of Peggy Carter with the hair and the lipstick! I love it!
I’m in love with those green pants!
Me, too!!!
I absolutely love the jungle shirt, and since you asked, old book smell is the beeeeessssssst!
Yassss! Angela keep these casual Vintage "make along" videos up sweetie 🎀 & you will become the next Sewing Starlet. I am so proud of you.. this is exactly what I search for when looking for hand sewn vintage clothing on u tube.
I LOVE these 1940's vlogs you have been doing lately!! These are costumes you can actually wear and they are so much fun! I also loved the 1950's dresses you were doing as well, if not more. You started a yellow gingham dress that I loved...it may have had a purple tie to go along with it. (I find the 1950's dresses are more forgiving to my hips and thighs.) I always look forward to your videos and instagram. When people tell me I am talented, I say, "I think maybe I am just a worker bee, because anyone can learn to sew. We grow with just doing and doing." I think we all respect your hard work which has lead you to become quite talented over these past 5 years! What sets you apart is that you are an excellent teacher. You inspire people to want to sew with how simple you make the process. Your material is easy to grasp as you cover each step and explain patterns. I foresee you having your own studio one day and having your own books and videos. For now, we will enjoy these!
Your sewing table is genius.
Yes indeed I too love the smell of print old and new. So you’re not alone in that.
Your posts are entertaining as much as they are instructional and make fascinating viewing that’s compelling and addictive.
I admire your style and commitment to the fashions of the past. Together with your skills and commitment I look forward seeing your career flourish.
I noticed the collar was wrong sides together and wondered if it was a mistake. Thank you for leaving that in. It makes me feel better about my mistakes. I'm so impressed with your sewing.
I love the shirts! And old book smell. I have a candle that is called Old Books. It's amazing. I burn it whenever I'm studying. As an online student, that's the closest I'll come to a "real" college experience.
I love the green pants you are wearing with the blouse.
I *LOVE* the old book smell. It reminds me of libraries.
I love old book smell, it smells like peace and comfort.
Old book smell is a treasure that more people need to know! I just imagine all the things the books themselves have been through.
You're not alone! Old book smell is totally the best and old books are awesome because of the history behind them. I also adore your fabric choices, they're so playful and you style your creations so well. I look forward to the next video!
Really like the old look patterns. They turned out great. Have fun sewing, later.
You press, not iron when sewing! Great job, nice idea on using French seams. Your instructions and explanation of your thoughts will be very helpful to lots of people. 😀
Old book smell reminds be of quiet corners of a library... nice and relaxing :)
I love the old book smell! I used to work in a library, and I loved walking through the books and embracing the smell! There is a set of fragrances my friend wears that also smell like old books. Love it!
Old book smells are the best. Nice job on the blouses!
I'm with you on the old book smell- it so comforting and that new plastic smell on new books gives me a headache!
I love old book smell OMG lol thought I was the only one and antique stores lol. Old books just have that smell of a long life
Old book smell is fab I brings to mind hidden treasure and times gone by. Anyone into vintage is probably likely to have an affinity for it. I can't wait to see the playsuit video
So agree! I love the smell of old books. I mean I like the smell of books in general but nothing beats the old book smell
I think these shirts would look AMAZING with dungarees, for a more modern look. I prefer new book smell but have definitely had this exact conversation with friends who prefer old book smell.
Thank you so much for sharing what you do with all of us. I always enjoy watching your videos, from the planning stages to the sewing stages. And, your costumes are truly amazing!!
Also love your choice of fabrics and the patterns you choose.
I LOVE the smell of old books.
Old book smell is heartwarming 💕 my mum was a librarian teehee
You amaze me! I found your vlogs and started watching them because I like costumes myself. I am not sewing costumes but I love to look at them. You do a really great job. You have inspired me to get out my long neglected sewing machine and put it to good use. Thanks!
Love seeing your mistakes and how you fix it. I am very inexperienced and it’s encouraging.
I love your video's and you're not alone liking the scent of old books ....... me too!!!
Old books are the beeeessst. Smell, feel, content... *happy sigh*. I love the antique store smell as well.
While I love old books, I’m allergic to dust and mold so I’m always wary to smell them. Beautiful shirts ❤
I love the smell of old books, too! 😍 My grandma has a big arrangement of them in her bedroom and I always love to wander around there and look what I haven't seen yet
The scissor cutting sound even sped up is so therapeutic.
I too love old book smell. You are a treasure.
That stripe fabric is DREAMY
Old books and summer rain are my favorite smells
After you wash and iron the fabric, fold it inside-out to lay out and cut. That way you can easily mark everything on back of fabric. It won't be seen on front after sewing and it is really a lot easier to pin darts & seams. We used tailor tacks to mark buttonholes & button placement, also easier from back. Fabric is only folded with design out so it can be easily seen by customers. My mother would use, on hand muslin, for interfacings, or a piece of the project fabric, if it didn't show through.
I love old books smell too - and old books! I remember my copy of one of James Fennimore Cooper’s books had the cover and beginning pages falling off in my hand. But, I just held it open in my hand and kept my nose to the page because some old books are just that good.
This was adorable. The pairing of the slacks was so cute. I also love the smell of old books! Thank you for sharing.
This fabric is everything! Beautiful.
I LOVE the smell of old books! They smell sweet and calming. I adore your work!
The jungle fabric is super cute! And how can anybody not like the smell of old books?! Unless they've gone mouldy, that just smells of sadness. Best place: the pre-1900 stack-room in the library - perfect room climate and perfect smell!
Old books are alright, but some can be a little musty. Really enjoyed the video and looking forward to see all of the others that your have planned!
I totally know what you mean! I love old pattern smell! I have quite a few I have acquired and love them! The old book sleep is so nice it does remind me of antique shops 😍😍😍😍. Loved this episode so much!! That fabric is so pretty
Thank you for sharing your processes! I adore 40's clothing and have adapted that genre for myself, as well. Old book Smell? YES! I adore browsing old books and vintage items, taking in the many bits of history and information along with all of the smells! As usual, I thoroughly enjoy watching your videos, Angela!!
I just love and adore this kind of videos you film. So relaxing
Those colors work so well on you. I really enjoyed watching you work with these vintage patterns. Inspiring as always to watch your videos.
heck yeah! Old book smell is the best!
I love your videos. All that I have watched, and I try to watch them all. Thank you so much for sharing your time and skills.
Love this whole video, perfect for ripping out a TON of old seams in a bed sheet I am re-purposing! And yeah girl, old book smell is THE BEST!
Such a classic look. Works so well with the trousers.
I too adore the old pattern smell. Loving these videos and these new outfits on you! Can't wait to see more
old book small reminds me of my grandmas house from when I was little. Brings back a lot of fun memories but new book smell is a reminder of fresh new beginnings. it may sound weird but it makes sense to me so...
I adore that jungle fabric, and I had to blink at the green near the end -- I bought the same fabric in purple for scrubs recently, and didn't expect to recognize it here. LOL! Your videos are so enjoyable to watch, and even more so -- inspirational. Keep up the wonderful work and know that others are watching, enjoying, and learning from all of them! (BTW: Definitely not alone, loving the old book smell -- it's one of the best aromas in the world!)
My great grandmother had a large library and i inherited part of it, so now when i walk into my library, that smell takes me back to my childhood
I love the trousers you paired this top with!! Green is my favorite color, and I think this outfit is one of my favorite casual ensembles you've put together!
I do love the smell of old books, too. You are not alone. It started very young for me; I remember the smell from the first library Mom took me to in the early to mid 1950s!
I loved this video! The 40s has a lot of really fun fashion, and the style you filmed this in felt very personal and quirky - thank you for making me want to sew more!!
I absolutely like the smell of old books as well! Loved the jungle print blouse!
Lol I don't even smell the old book smell anymore because I've worked in a library for the last twelve years. It's just "normal smell"
I love seeing youtubers without makeup 😊😊 so pretty!
Some people ent half got some talent , you're so pretty, thank you for sharing Ms Clayton !
I just saw that McCall's has released another one of your patterns. Congratulations! I am so excited to get it.
when your dog barked every time you talked i thought my headphones were playing up haha
Love the smell of an old book. It reminds me of.... Something pure
It turned out so well made and lovely
Im so glad i am not the only one who still makes silly mistakes as a veteran seamstress. Thanks for your honesty
So cute -I love the jungle fabric.
