With a 1982 copyright date on instruction sheet this kit isn't quite as old as I am but it is a respectable "ripe old age" of 42 years.
Assembly started with engine, both because the engine is really the heart of any motorcycle and also because...
0:19...the instructions were very insistent that one BEGIN with the engine!
0:30 Most of the engine parts were on a parts tree that appeared either silver painted or plated. Once I got a closer look it turned out they were plated, not a chrome finish but more of a matte silver.
0:49 Plastic seemed more rigid than styrene in the truck kits I am more used to working with, although I wouldn't say it was actually brittle. To be safe I cut parts trees well back from parts themselves with sprue cutters, then did final removal of remaining parts tree sections with fine tooth razor saw. This minimizes the likelihood of breaking a piece off any parts.
1:05 Purple Power soak got the plating off...
1:13...revealing well detailed, nicely molded parts with no flash to speak of and minimal parting lines to clean up.
1:23 In fact most of the parts appeared to be designed so joints occurred where joints existed on the real engine. One area where there is some unavoidable seam clean up work is cylinder fins. Folding small piece of 400 grit sandpaper in half made a handy tool for cleaning between fins. Just the right thickness to fit in a small space where no files would work.
1:47 Not having any experience with motorcycle kits I am going by instruction sheet for the most part. One minor modification was adding .060" x .250" styrene strip behind two slotted holes on front of engine's bottom end...
1:59...to provide more positive location and better gluing surface for front engine mounts. This piece is completely hidden when cylinder assembly is glued in place...
2:17...and again the joint between engine bottom and top end components is replicated on the model so no seam to fill here.

I have two motorcycles ahead of me, a Revell 1/12 kit from a few years back, and a Tamiya 1/12 kit (Yamaha 1600) that I bought last year. I'm looking forward to both.
