The house I grew up in was built in 1895 I had severe lead poisoning as a kid and I can tell you right now it does mess up your learning capabilities.
well I probably am, I do tend to work with the stuff a lot, but I have been getting regular blood tests and so far I'm not in the danger range.

I might have ingested a LOT of lead by now. My old house was built in 1900, and I lived there for almost SEVEN YEARS. I forget EVERYTHING these days. I might be going freaking CRAZY right now.

All these people bent out of shape over lead paint, have no clue that most cities in the US (older cities, 90+yrs) have lead pipes for service lines for water.

As a Bosnian I seriously didnt know that we use fuel that has lead in it. I remember watching Cosmos on TV and hearing that it was banned several years ago in America so I expected it to be that way in Bosnia too. I was wrong.
It's been more than several years. Lead was significantly reduced in gasoline in the 80s and finally banned in 1996.
Many cookware contains lead. For example, those nice colorful starbucks cups have lead. Certain plates and bowls have lead. Quite a few cooking vessels contains lead. Lead can also be found on door nobs or railings. I was hoping you'd cover some more of these things in your video.

thank u so much this is exactly the video I needed. today I accidentally scraped my hand against the wall where part of the paint was chipped off. it is good to know and relieving to know that it is illegal for schools and pretty much any building in modern America doesn't have leaded paint (that is after 1978 off course. my school was built in 1999. off course using lead paint in schools would mean that other students would have gotten sick as well) @TheInfographicsShow

my house was built in the 1950s and in the upstairs area there was lead paint. sister had asthma so breathing in the LED air wasn't really helping. so we had to get all the LED paint from the top floor removed and repainted it. but my sister didn't suffer any severe effects from the LED.

Here in my country, it is better to be extremely careful, because it is difficult to get lead free paint, you'll see illegal battery recycling plant, most house use leaded pvc pipe

What about lead in gasoline? Until the 1970s, lead was used in gasoline, which ended up in the clouds, then fell back to Earth in the form of precipitation, where it ended up in rivers and streams, which fed into lakes and reservoirs that we drank water out of every day.
After I signed the lease for the first apartment I moved into as an adult, I was given a pamphlet addressing the dangers, concerns and warnings about lead paint because the apartment was built in 1973, five years before the 1978 ban on lead paint in homes.
And this year when I purchased a new furnace for my condo, when I filled out the paperwork, I was required to disclose the year my condo was built due to issues about lead paint. This time, there were no concerns because my condo was built in 1984.
I don't think I'm being poisoned by lead. I live in a country where such sudden industrialization didn't take place. The day my country was industrialized, such cases were already either taken care of or banned.

3:32 Also a lot of AvGas (Aviation Gas or fuel for any piston-powered airplane) is still leaded. However, the FAA is currently working towards phasing it out (and some companies in the industry are designing engines for diesel or leaded AvGas alternatives now in preparation for the inevitable outlawing of leaded AvGas).
Sure hope that is many years off or never. I've enjoyed burning leaded AVgas in my hot rod and boat for over thirty years, it's a great consistent high octane fuel that tolerates high compression and holds off detonation nicely.

Lead was actually not used to make your car go further, it was used to raise octane and to help prevent engine knocking.
I learned that from veritasium
Lead does not "boost" petrol. Main reason for adding lead was that petrol without lead additives would gradually burn away/deteriorate the valve seats in an internal combust. engine - lead was used in order to accumulate on those seats, making metal "softer", less brittle, and less prone to corroding away. With advances in metallurgy, engine heads were made of alloys who didn't suffer of this effect, hence unleaded petrol could be used.
Ok, I certainly have too much lead in me. I used to melt potentially radioactive LEAD salvaged from gear in cancer hospital in a kitchen spoon over gas oven at home and KNOW the metallic taste of molen lead gas, I used to chew on lead sinkers when fixing fishing tackle and not long ago I still had a lead nugget as a fidget toy.
I always got told I’d die from lead poisoning if I drew on my skin with a pen lol

Old newspaper ink, I believe, had heavy metals like lead in them. You definitely don't want to use those as rolling papers.
Lead in gasoline had nothing to do with distance or mpg, it raised the octane level so the fuel could withstand higher compression ratios without detonation. Also, leaded gas is still vary much still around, AV gas is still leaded and racing gas has as much as 5 grams per gallon. I've been burning high octane leaded gas for over 30 years in my drag car and boat and will continue to do so for many years.
I'm more scared of asbestos because my school is made of asbestos, and some kid punched a hole in the wall, releasing asbestos
Chandler Short Asbestos isn't bad as long as you don't disturb it, Asbestos is a fibrous rock and the fibers when traveling through the air can be inhaled and cause damage to the lung. If it's just in a wall and no one has punched a hole or is working on removing the wall you are fine.

Jessicatzen Yes, lead was used to raise the octane of fuel (the amount of energy needed to combust) to prevent engine knocking (combustion happening when the Piston is not at the top of it's stroke, it's called knocking cause it produces a knocking sound)
