    I’m running into a bit of mDNS trouble with my new Meraki stack, and was looking for an overview of how it works. This was perfect, thank you Paul!

    Very useful video, THX.

    Yeah, in enterprise segment it's usually a best practice to block mDNS on access layer. There are other ways of discovery which don't put so much pressure on Wi-Fi.

    Mdns related, any idea on why it is so hard to get .local to resolve on a windows machine using command line or web browser?

  • @PaulBunkey
    @PaulBunkey Před rokem +2

    so it basically replaces NETBIOS, which is mostly blocked nowadays...

    Awesome. How did you do that for the different vlans? I'm using a vm with interfaces in each vlan and then avahi repeating the packets.
    Another q: is I recently started using librenms (coming from cacti). It is really awesome but I find the dashboard a little bit simple. In cacti I had a tree with all my hosts which makes it possible to really quick get the graphs that I'm looking for.

    I hate mDNS, and yes i know what do you mean about mDNS flying in high density networks haha!! mDNS come from hell.
    It's very cool that aruba allow to control mDNS by vendor, not every controller can do that, it seems some controllers are all or nothing. Amazing video, thanks!

    Is the .local part of dns server suffix or standard? I know I could look up, but i seen too many .local labs.

    • @dingokidneys
      @dingokidneys Před 11 měsíci

      As I understand it, the .local is a standard part of the mDNS protocol. Consequently one shouldn't call their network domain .local; use .home or .myplace or just don't bother with a domain.

    just stumbled upon this while tracing for something else. Would be cool if you cloud showcase multicast routing

      Maybe one day I will. For now, this is some general multicast stuff for IPv4

    If you’re ever looking for an idea for new content, can you please consider making a video that explains how the nbn works. I can’t find any decent content that explains the technology that drives the nbn. Most videos focus on the physical layer like copper, fibre etc. I’m after a more detailed explanation of how it works in terms of layer 2 & 3. I.e, how does the IP get traffic from my public ip on my router to their gateway on the other side of the nbn/poi.
    Great videos by the way, I really like your style of videos.

      Are you looking at where the previous "more ..." command in the scrollback buffer just happened to line up with the vi editor?

    • @joni2622
      @joni2622 Před rokem

      That was a previously run command, the output of that doesn't change when u change the file
