Think What to Do; Do What You Think - Philippians 4:8-9 - Skip Heitzig

  • Our minds are ever being confronted with ideas, temptations, principles, and values. The battlefield is found in mainstream and social media, universities, and professional journals. Because it's impossible to make it through any given day without bumping into these thoughts and ideas, we must carefully, righteously, and actively manage them. To plant an idea is to produce an action. What we ponder we eventually practice.
This teaching is from our series Technicolor Joy: A Study through Philippians with Skip Heitzig from Calvary Church.

Praise God! I am the gardener! I'm feeding and watering my soul throughout the day; keeping weeds out. Lord my desire is to internalize your Word. Walk it. Love it! Amen.

Skip is such a talented preacher. He teaches the truth from the depth of his understanding and heart, making it understandable and applicable. I love his humor too, which contrasts with the depth and importance of his messages. May God bless him and his ministry in abundance.

Much needed for me today, so many negative thoughts going on in my head. Hard to put God's word to practice, especially when it comes to our minds.

God must have seen an area within me that needed mending. Here I am, 46 year old female, watching a 6 year old sermon, that just popped up in my feed, and took me right back to my childhood.
I remember that I was age 5 (kindergarten) when I first started thinking. I don't mean when I started having beliefs about stuff... I was filled with wonder! About everything! If it crossed my mind, I had to ask. "Is the moon the same size as the sun? Who wrote math? Why do I like things others don't like? Does my tongue taste food or is it my brain?" Yep... I was that kid. I annoyed everyone within a 5 mile radius of me. Including my single parent mother. The question that I asked that sent her over the edge was, "do people see the same as other people? Like... do you see blue as I see blue or do we call what we see blue because we're taught that it's blue?" My mom lost it. She told me to never ask another question again. She ridiculed me and told me "no one like a smarty pants".
She stopped answering my questions like it was something I would grow out of if she just paid it no attention. I'm sure she was exhausted and I added too that.
I would go on like this all of my youth. Through my teen years. And college. And I am still filled with wonder and questions. Being this way would cause serious looks from teachers as they told me I completely misunderstood the assignment. "Everyone understood what I wanted, why didn't you?" My heart would say back that, it was them who didn't realize the vast number of beautiful ways to do the work. I never spoke it out loud.
Friends told me I was "too deep", and "too serious". Most boys at whatever age I was, either didn't like the conversations or they bored me with their lack of intellect. It was a long road to meet my husband, and even a longer road to meeting Jesus Christ.
Jesus has never once stared off into the distance as I asked my millions of questions. "Jesus, do you have good days? Why do I feel like I knew you before I knew you, and I miss you when I'm not with you? Can you ever be proud of your humans? Jesus, is the guy John sees measuring the temple in Revelation, Ezekiel measuring the temple in Ezekiel? Jesus! Why the blood? Why so much killing? "... etc. My beautiful Jesus has answered EVERY question I've had through scripture. Supernaturally at times!
Sometimes I just have to go through everything that I'm so thankful for with Him. My husband and daughter, our home, food, the freedom to worship Him, books, the Bible... its just an ongoing conversation I have with Him. I've never felt more accepted for who He created me to be.
