  • My long-awaited trip to my Slovenian ancestral homeland, the town of Cerknica, where my great-grandfather was born, and from which he emigrated to America in 1912. I tell his story, visit his house, make some fascinating genealogical discoveries, and pay my respects at the final resting place of my great-great grandparents.

I live 30 km outside of Cerknica, it's a nice, lovely town. BTW, lake Cerknica is one of the largest intermittent lakes in Europe and you can rent a canoe and explore it. Your great grandfather had lots of cojones to leave home for unknown... It's a shame you didn't speak to any locals, they are very friendly and would love to help you to find out more about your great grandfather and his (yours) family. Great video!

Thank you very much for your kind comments! I agree that my great grandfather was very brave to board a ship in 1912 at age 18 and sail across the ocean by himself to start a new life in America. I'm very glad he did or I wouldn't be here! Next time I come through Slovenia, I hope to meet with some of my distant cousins who still live there, and I'd also love to canoe around the lake. I really appreciate your kindness. I didn't expect anyone to watch this video except for my family members in the U.S. - I'm happy that you enjoyed it. Thank you again!

Very moving recollection with your past . Braniselj is a very common family name at Notranjska (Inner Carniola) . Dinaric Alps = Javorniki (Yavorniky) mountain range. I live nearby and see this amazing picture every day. We are quite fortunate to be able to live here.

Thank you very much for your kind words! I appreciate knowing the precise name of those mountains. It was a beautiful walk through the countryside outside of Cerknica, on a gorgeous day. I was swept up in the moment. Your country is so verdant and lovely. I had wanted to visit there for years and it did not disappoint! I am honored to call it my ancestral homeland.

Please , visit village Goričice , located near Grahovo. There is a beautifully preserved ancient home with straw roof. It can be visited most times by asking owners next door to show you around (czcams.com/video/bpBksI8W06w/video.htmlsi=jKZH7RBGNKCX9Yxd).@@theinternationalvoyager

You wrote: Leaving my comfort zone is my comfort zone. It fits to this video - your grand grandfather left his comfort zone and embarked on a new life. Nice presentation of your family history.

I got the shivers watching this and thinking of you visiting where my grandfather was born. I loved especially the views of the cemetery. The grave is still maintained? By a family member?

Well it's only been 25 years since last person was buried there. Ofc it's maintained, unless buried at another cemetery the children of the people buried are still alive and for sure grandchildren.

Yes, there are so many of his descendants that still live in the area and it's clearly taken care of. Maybe next time I am there I'll try to connect with some of my distant cousins in Cerknica. I already have some of their contact info.
