Thanks for watching! We`re curious to know if you`ve always dreamed of hiking the Haiku Stairs, Oahu, like us? We would love to hear from you!
Looking to do this in March! Don’t want to get a ticket, but I’m seriously considering!
The main issue, and why the police patrol the surrounding area 24hrs per day, is because of hikers trespassing through residential/private property. Ownership has recently changed hands and there is serious talk of having a private company manage and open the stairs. Perhaps be patient and wait to do them so that the deal doesn't fall through. Residents of the area have had years of input and discussion. It would be a shame to have them end up being dismantled so that squeaky wheels stopped squeaking.
3922 steps, mostly vertical. Weather is usually wet and the stairs/handrails are usually slippery.
@@peggysue7993 thanks for the info Peggy. I understand why the residents could be so upset about people using their street as a trail head/parking lot. That would be great if a private company took responsibility for this trail! I would happily pay a fee to do this hike.
@@peggysue7993 thanks for the info! Unless the opportunity falls in my lap; I’ll prob err on the side of not doing it !
People like you are the exact reason why they're removing the stairs. If you had any interest in doing the Haʻikū stairs any service, you would have spent time advocating for it to be maintained and reopened instead of adding to the problem.
I did this hike today with 5 other hiking buddies....It was led by a local experienced hiker....for me &the other 5 hikers, it was our 1st time there....we climbed the legal way....very very long, hardest & very challenging......we took our time to hike safely & summited ....so proud of ourselves ...definitely worth the effort
That’s great!
Make no mistake, it's dangerous. When you start going up near complete verticals that's when your fear of heights are tested. And climbling back down is more terrifying. My palms were having spasms for days having gripped those metal beams so tight. Not to mention there are sections of the trail half broken off due a hurricane and so you're only holding on to one metal beam looking down thousands of feet sometimes.
THIS is why I would never try.
How long did it take to get up there and back down?
@@Boobarexoxo Depends on what type of Physical condition you are in
To clarify (since me and my wife just hiked it) the broken part is at a relatively flat area (compared to the vertical sections)
I have done hikes in the past. Doesn't seem that bad imo. First of all, it's not that tall. Second, it has railings till the summit. You got nothing to fear unless you are silly enough to trip over thick railings, lol!
Truly great video! This was such a beautiful hike. I also enjoy hiking in the Mountains! Keep it up!
Thank you so much!
@@madetoexplore your very welcome keep up the great work!
Looks so awesome, what an adventure! Your video was great, thanks for sharing!
Welcome! 😄
wow that view looks stunning. thanks so much for sharing that with us
Thank you so much for watching! The views were insane!!
You guys!! Amazing!!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Thanks for watching E! :)
This was a must on our bucket list. Now that we just did it "the legal way" unlike these two in the video. I don't recommend it to anyone. 10 miles RT, It was extremely dangerous in "my opinion". This will test your mental and physical ability even with all proper gears. I have done many, many hikes, Rocky Mountain National Park, Banf (Ten peaks), Upper Yosemite, Glacier National Park, Angel's Landing etc...by far this the scariest and most dangerous. Most of the videos on CZcams honestly dont tell all. Sheer cliffs to climb with wet ropes up and back down. Never again even on a dry clear day. Again just my opinion.
We talked to about a dozen people who did the back way and said there was no way they are going back down that way. They ended up going down the front and getting a taxi back to there vehicle.
This looks like an awesome place. It is in my bucket list now :)
Christina Tsiripidou thank you! It’s so beautiful!
It's gonna get demolished now because people keep trying to climb up and get hurt, costing the city a lot of money. The city council just voted to remove the stairs in 2021
So cool. I would love to do that. Took my breath away looking at the view. Going down must have sucked worse than going up.
You got that right! Lol
Looks like a pretty epic hike!
One of the best!
That is an incredible view! I'd love to do those stair. My wife wouldn't ever though!!
It`s definitely not for everyone, but it`s pretty incredible!
This video is so well done! Thank you for the awesome content!
Liked & subscribed after seeing this well executed video. I’d definitely take on the ‘Haiku’ challenge with the right woman by my side but I’m content to just admire and appreciate y’all’s aesthetic, respectful and amiable attitude towards the magnificence of nature.
Please consider visiting and presenting the stunning natural wonders of Arizona and Utah (Horseshoe Bend, The GC, Bryce Canyon, Antelope Canyon, Echo Cliffs, etc). Only took 2-3 days to see them all and I can’t wait to go back.
We just visited Utah earlier this year but haven’t had time yet to create any videos on it. Hopefully soon!
Amazing! I really want to do that!
Ryan Baldwin thank you! It’s challenging in more ways than one, but SO beautiful!
I had never heard of this hike before but the view up there looked amazing and worth the climb!
Consciously Expanding it definitely is!
'C.E.'....I've been in the USN for 20+ years, and I traveled to Hawaii nine (9) Times!! I haven't heard of this place till now. Now that I am a Veteran for the pass ten (10) years..... I sure would like to see this place!!!
Wow this is one of the best videos i’ve seen on the Haiku Stairs. Ive been researching for almost 2 years now on advice and ways to get up there. I was wondering how you guys got passed the guard? There is many ways but i was wondering which way y’all took and if it was easy or not. This was a great video and thank you for sharing it with us!
Yes! I’m curious as well! I’ll be going in March, where did you park and how did you get around the guard?😂❤️
Thank you guys so much! We parked in the community and took the trail through the “bamboo forest”. It’s on the left hand side of the road behind an abandoned building with graffiti on it. There is a rough trail to follow that takes you a few hundred feet up on the stairs. Hope that helps guys and enjoy!☺️
@@madetoexplore How long does it take to get through the bamboo forest?
@@cama296 between 10-15min. Once you reach the chain link fence/road that is the end of the bamboo forest.
@@madetoexplore oh ok i thought it was a little longer but thank you for letting me know!
Enjoyed the video and it’s good you put mentioned both the legal and illegal ways to climb so people can decide for themselves. It's a shame the government is considering dismantling the stairs on this awesome hike.
Couldn’t agree more Mike!
Awesome video. We are in Oahu right now. Did Haiku yesterday. Me and 4 kids, 11 to 19, all fit athletes (except me with dad bod lol). 11 and 16 year old stopped at 1st platform, too scared to continue. 14 and 19 year old summited with me. The adventure of a lifetime! Looked just like your video except we had seeerious wind closer to the top, and light drizzle on the way down. Some notes:
1. The "legal" way up the back with no stairs is far more dangerous; don't do it unless experienced, fit, trekker.
2. Park at preschool (to not take locals parking), don't go before dawn and wake up locals with dog barking, walk around chainlink fence at haiku road, walk right to entrance unless security there (then go thru bamboo forest on trod path. Bamboo FULL of mosquitos.
3.The half dozen steep parts with fall on each side are no joke, especially when windy/wet.
4. We found going down really easy, using arms and skipping steps, and were comfortable with the heights (but not overconfident)
5. We've been here 9 days...this was our favorite memory.
Awesome!! Thank you so much for sharing your experience and all the useful tips. Enjoy the rest of your trip 😄
Hey Caleb,
Im planning to do it in july, but did you see some helicopter flying around, like cops for example ?
What time did you start the trail ?
Im gonna do through the bambo to avoid to trespass on people's garden, which is actually the minimum to do.
@@elhion We saw 2 helicopters, both turist rides. Started about 1 hr after sunrise. We didn't go through anyone's garden. The corner of Haiku and Kuneki is the gate. If it's closed just walk around it. It's the overgrown shoulder of a public road, not anyone's property. Then walk right to stairs...unless guard is there...then either give him doughnuts or it's bamboo forest. Have fun!
@@calebwhite1410 thanks a lot for this information, Im kind a bit stressed about the 1000 dollars fine.
did you talk to the guard or did do it through the bamboo forest ?
@@elhion No guard there. Just go. They won't chase you.
I did this in the 90's when i was stationed at Marine Corps Base Hawaii. I just read today that they are tearing them down in August.
Yeah, it’s pretty sad 😔
Wow! Loved this! You're so brave!
Thank you so much!
I hiked it in 2018 when I was 23 and it was amazing. I think the very first 15-30 minutes are challenging because the stairs are literally a ladder and you climb vertically for half an hour. Basically there is nothing behind your back so if you fall you die. You hold your life to that one metal bar beside you. That’s the scariest part. But after that it becomes more manageable and safe. I extremely enjoyed it, best time of my life, however I only recommend to young people or folks with good shape. Don’t bring your grandma 😅
No Grandmas allowed 😂
no way! 1. I hate heights 2. not tryna get a fine and 3. it's scary i was sweating just watching this video
Me and my family were there right after Oahu re-opened from C-19 lockdown and we climbed Diamond Head, but wish we had known about the Hidden Stairway! Maybe next time.
The funny thing is, I suffer from chronic back pain here on the mainland, but while in Oahu I had None of that! Not sure if it was the air pressure or what, but it was Heaven on Earth!
That’s great! Glad you enjoyed it 😄
Sick video!
Thank you!
I've done some climbs. This would have been awarding and awesome to do. I would never be able to do it today at my age and health issues. Wish i knew about while i was a bit younger. ❤
It absolutely was! Even tho you can do it now, I hope our video helped you see what it was like. Have a great day! 😄
I was stationed at Kaneohe in '85-88 and did it twice. Stayed the night once
Wow, that must have been a very memorable experience!
Wow, this looks incredible! I've been to Oahu and didn't even know this was there.
The only reason we knew is through Instagram! ;) Thank you so much for watching!
This is serene
Wine and Wisdom it sure is!
Great video. How would you compare this to hiking to the top of Angel's Landing?
In our opinion, this hike is much more rewarding the angels landing. This hike is also more difficult.
Shout out to the bald, shirtless dude jumping off the roof at 3:30.
Lol
🤣
Looks like darn hard work
It’s definitely not the easiest hike on this island! haha
Does the shirtless guy jumping off the roof at 3:30 scare the shit out of anyone else?
😂
I want to do this!! Wow!
Leila Ricciardo right?!😍
I did it twice in one week 6 years ago.. And I plan to do it again later this month
Awesome! Thanks for watching
When are you doing this? @john Hill
@@elsalimoges9124 hi.. next time I get to Oahu I hope to do it again

Very nice video
Thanks for watching!
Im going to Oahu in March! I want to do this soooo bad! Did you get caught when you got back down?
No we didn’t luckily. Have fun and enjoy!
@@madetoexplore I just watched your Hawaii on a budget video, literally a life saver!
We’re so glad you found it helpful! Have an awesome trip and thanks for checking us out☺️
Hi I came down the stairs and met the guard who told me to not come back.I got lucky I guess because the guard does see you as your coming down you can sneak through bamboo forest at bottom just before the stairs end or do as I did and not make guard try to catch you.Good luck and even if you do get pinched it would be worth the 1000 dollar fine.
How is something "slightly illegal"? Other than that, searching for Haiku Stairs is how I found you and will now be subscribing to your channel. Great video, for sure.
It’s not, we were just worried about saying it in the video 😬
Awesome vid, How long is the hike from start to finish and do you come back down the same way you went up?
3.9km and yes
Wow I could do this hike (although closed to the public now) & incl the China Wall 🤗 But never the Hari Hari Mountain climb 🤢 Have you done the latter adventure 😁
Ima go up here one day regardless if it's legal or not.
OMG! it looks absolutely beautiful but I don't think I would want do it I would probably peep my pants LOL
I hear you there! I was pretty terrified at a few spots haha😉
Then, you'll be a Little Bo-Peep. ;-)
It's like you're paying 1000 bucks to hike the trail (worth it). But if you do it well enough then you get it for free 😆
I like the way you think 🧐
Guess I waited too long to do this. However I do have one week of vacation left this year
Awesome! Is there a recommended time of day to go up since the clouds often block the view?
We started around 9am on a clear day and had no issues, but I know a ton of people go up for sunrise!
What time did you start?
In the morning around 9am I think
Why they don’t setup cable cars like Switzerland?
For the same reasons that most beautiful mountains don’t have cable cars I’d imagine. Thanks for watching!
I went to go do it the illegal way and there was a security guard there that wouldn’t let you go on it
Yeah that’ll happen haha
Thanks for posting. My son just got to the top last week. He didn't take the stairs, he went up from the other side of the mountain, a grueling, dangerous hike. They need to fix this up, it's too iconic just to let it sit there in it;s current state, yet 2 years later since this video, there it still sits in the same condition, only worse for wear.
Glad to hear he did it safely 👍 Yes, I really wish they would’ve repaired the steps
How long is the hike?
The Haiku Stairs are 3.7km out and back
3:29 I think the guy behind you took the backway... 🤣 where the Hell did theycome from hahaha
Ha! No idea 🤷♂️
Miss you guys elliot
Where are you two from? Heard you say something about being in another country.
We’re from Canada
Were did u park ?
In the residential area. We tried to park slightly farther away from the trail and not directly in front of anyone’s house.
Ty for the info
I did this in Dec of 2019 solo the legal long way dangerous as all hell Moulano Trail. But I took the stairs down and met the guard who told me not to come back.Great too see people are still doing the Stairway can't wait to get back because I will spend the nite at the top next time.
I thought the state banned people from using the steps?
I'm going to need a stairlift
Excellent video-thanks for sharing. Your background music should be a little softer.
Aaaaa, love it! Would love to climb it. Would love it to be legal. Please repare the stairs, make it legal!
Agreed! Although I think it’s to late 😢
@@madetoexplore Why? Did they dismantle it already??
I would but the fine is a 1000 dollars. :( I was just In Ohau last week with my local friends who've live here. There are many cops there now so be careful.
The music needs to be lowered, it is hard to hear what you say. Other than that pretty cool video!!
What way did you go in ? Wanting to do it and wondering what best access point is
The bamboo forest is how most people access the trailhead and park there vehicle in the residential area. Check out the Alltrails app.
Just two more narcissistic wankers who think the rules don’t apply to them.
The rules definitely apply to us. Just like the rule of not sleeping in your car, on the job, applied to the security guard at the bottom of the stairs.
I want to try this but i am not as physically fit as I once was but I'd sure like to give it a try.
Never knew this was a real thing
Round trip only took 5 minutes.
“Due to rampant illegal trespassing, Haiku Stairs is a significant liability and expense for the city, and impacts the quality of life for nearby residents,” Announced today the stair case is to be removed, removal will being at the end of April 24.
That’s disappointing!
I’m there dude
No one is supposed to use or go up those steps but because of tourist not following the rules the stairs are being removed.
That’s true but they could’ve made millions on refurbishing them
Looks like some sections in Poor Condition need Repair thats all
Unfortunately it’s getting torn down 😢
Haiku stairs is not a hike. It is stairs and ladders with a chute if you stray from the path. I recommend sneakers and gloves. The old Haiku stairs are different to the new polished one. I compare it to the H3 vs Old Pali Road. SAVE THE NEW HAIKU STAIRS !!!
Hopefully they decide too!
@@madetoexplore It is a great climb. But politicians are cowards looking for the easy way out.
I’d pay 1000.00 for a one day permit!
Unfortunately the Stairs are being demolished. It is a safety and liability issue. People are being issued citations and arrested for Trespassing and not following the Laws. Both ways are closed and it is lost to Time. Be glad you get to watch this or have the opportunity to do this when you can.
I'd like to be able fall asleep reading newspapers and not have to wake up because I've got a chill. Those ruts in the sides of the hills! Erosion, condensation and a quick repository (ocean) to wash it all away!
And now they are tearing-down this historical landmark because of people like you.
They could’ve made millions and used the money for conservation. People will now hike the backside which is arguably more dangerous and will cause disruption to locals in other areas (Moanalua Valley)
It's been 4 years and they now are finally ripping them up
😢
Sorry but those rails would have to be over my head .. in fact I would have to be caged in with a safety harness and plus much more to ever attempt that . Actually I just wouldn’t . lol
It’s definitely not for everyone haha
State of Honolulu Hawaii Police department here 0:30 . Regarding your illegal hike up Haiku stairs, if you return to Honolulu Hawaii, upon return you will be detained charged with trespassing up to a 5000$ fine, and fine of 1000$ for hiking the stairs. The other option is to send 1000.00 usd to Nuʻuanu Avenue Alakea St P.O. Box 3450 and charges will be dismissed.

The council voted unanimously to remove the stairs in 2021. Work will take at least six months and cost $2.5 million, according to the mayor’s office.
It’s a disappointing decision
Why can't they fix the stairs instead of demolishing a landmark? 😒 they always do that
My guess would be because it’s easier to say no than to organize a plan
It will never be legal. Too difficult for most tourists. If it were legal, I bet there would be a death within a month. Or they would force a harness with 2 clipins, making it excruciatingly slow. Unfortunately, the stats quo is the best imo.
People never dam listen...the real reason these stairs will be taken down..
I think they should keep the stairs and repair them. It looks like an amazing hike.
Completely agree!
Lol who stores poison right next to water source
I thought it was illegal?
The front way is and the back way is legal
The legal way takes 10-12 hours lol the “illegal” way only takes 2
Thank you for this. Been searching on how far the illegal way is. So 10-12 hours legal way and more dangerous vs illegal way and only 2 hours. I’ll pay 1,000 bucks lol
For someone of average fitness the legal way only takes about ~5.5hrs (return) - excluding rest/photo stops. The illegal way about ~5hrs (return) - excluding rests/photo stops. Not sure where you get 10~12hrs from(???)
For the idiots who are outraged by this video, please step back and consider that David & Kayleigh are presenting and providing honest and respectful content that’s actually informing the viewers.
IG influencers and anyone seeking likes, fame or self promotion are the real problem.
Appreciate it!
Hey Guys…I hate to sound like your Dad here…but you both should consult an attorney before you recommend people taking an illegal hike that could literally kill someone.
You are not an “extreme sports” channel….and you don’t really put up any legal disclaimers to prevent people from trying this themselves and instead…are actually giggling and encouraging people to risk their lives and do something illegal. I have to assume you got sent a fine, since posting the video.
Just be careful…you guys were literally laughing about doing an illegal hike. I know you are kids…but you need better advisors.
Or at least be adamant about. NOT TRYING THIS YOURSELVES. Again…for those thinking I’m a downer…I have no reason to pick in these kids. But it is true that they are part of the contribution to this beautiful area taking down the stairs.
Especially promoting such a GOD MADE place.
At least they have the film now for their channel.
And the stairs will be down end of April 2024.
On a positive note the music and video were shot well…so I while I can appreciate your “artistry”….I can’t condone the delivery. Hopefully you don’t become the “illegal hikes network”….and yes, I’m exaggerating. Hope you stay healthy out there.

Last week, the mayor of Honolulu ordered the stairs’ removal, following a recommendation by the City Council, because of concerns over safety, trespassing and the environment.
Officials said that the Haiku Stairs, which do not have a public entrance, are too much trouble to maintain and create a nuisance for the private property owners whose land has been overrun by trespassers. Honolulu budgeted $1 million to dismantle the stairs, which could happen as early as next year.
