I was at Went, but was too young to really recall enjoying much of the great jams. The event was bigger than a 13yr olds mind. So stumbling upon this when I relistened to the show for the first time (thanks spreadsheet!) was simply the greatest. 1am in my living room bouncing my head back and forth like I was possessed.
I remember turning to my girlfriend after this jam and saying that was the funkiest I've ever this this band play. Felt validated when in Bittersweet Motel Trey is backstage saying they sounded like James Brown on a bad day. What a kick ass, funky jam.
Matthew Kresge I was flying on mescaline that I had mistakenly thought was bogus. Went from disappointment to disbelief at how incredibly funky that music was. It was as close to a religious experience as music has ever allowed for me.
You're not a drummer are you? Nothing really impressive about the cymbal work. It's extremely easy to play & the same beat is used in countless phish jams
@@jonearwood82 dude, get fucked with that haha. Homeboy up there just likes the ride work. It's great. It's jumpy. It makes me think of the Denver Ghost which was coming down the pipeline. Point me to 2 other jams, besides the Denver Ghost, which uses that.
I'm not overlooking anything. You don't know me nor do you know my background so don't pretend like you do. And to the guy that told me to get fuckrd along with the guy who liked that comment, grow the fuk up. I have been a solid Phish fan since 1994. I can't stand fans like you. You freaking out and get defensive every time somebody has something to say critical in nature. I love Phish but they're not perfect and I'm entitled to my opinion. You're entitled to your opinion. But don't be fucking insulting me. I know what I'm talking about.
I can see where you’re at with this comment. These are one of those funk moments that I can jump to if I only have a little time on my hands to Jam some Phish or I’m packing a bowl with a friend.
I jumped onto the Summer 1997 Tour in Chicago, and The Great Went was the most amazing ending I could have imagined. The quality of this second set has never been bested, IMO, and I've listened to this jam so many times it is now a part of my DNA. Spectacular Phish.
at around 17:57 is a lifelong memory for me. just from that moment on I remember dancing and being in a state of total zen at the show. it was actually beyond bliss.
The version the next year at the lemonwheel was amazing too. I still love seeing them but I would my left nut to hear a funky 20 min 2001 again. These 7 min 3.0 ones ain't cutting it
Considering most 1.0 versions were under 4 minutes, i'm pleased with 7 minute ones. 20 min 2001's have never been a typical occurrence....also the fact is, i'm more concerned with quality of jam vs. quantity....too many long jams lack cohesiveness overall......Not all, but many. I'll take a well crafted effortless 5 minute segment of pure jam bliss versus 16 minutes of trial and error "this just isn't taking off" jams anyday. Opinions will vary. That said....this is a GREAT 20 minute jam....stays in the pocket and tasty.
The 13 minute one from Mexico 2019 is possibly the best 3.0 one I've heard. Also might be the longest. When I heard it, I jumped up saying 'yes yes yes'!! So wish they'd do what they did in Mexico more often in 3.0. The Baker's one is cool because it's one of those rare moments when you kind of know what's next (following the Harpua story) as it was the perfect song to play at that moment. Others worth noting I can think of: 6/25/10 - a tribute to MJ 8/5/18 - just a really fun one, especially if you listen to the entire show first.
Mu favorite Phish jam of all time
Freaking amazing.....the Superband.......unbelievable what these guys do........every show......crazyness.

Agreed. I wasn't even there...although I did get to see the 2nd best version of this at the gorge in 98.
Actually wait...full.retraction. This is the best 2001 ever. Hands down.
But that ghost from atlanta 7 23 97.
That's the best jam ever imo.

The cymbal playing at 19:26 is the greatest moment in Phish history.

Ladies and Gentlemen....please rise, as we play our national anthem
The ball game crowd with this as the national anthem would turn into the spac Pavillion crowd.
Was At this show!!! i can not explain what we all went through weather wise until this !!!!
RAIN RAIN RAIN
Wicked. Being there was incredible. About 20 of us drove from the Niagara Region, Canada and
we had the best time of our lives.
It was an awesome weekend!
22 hours from NC
Best 2001 ever!
This was my second Phish show.... I was 17. first one was Clifford Ball. I specifically remember this set as being life altering. It was SO good.
I was 17 and there too! Life defining weekend.

Best Ever
I was here wow so long ago now, amazing weekend, drove up there from Boston with a group of 20 plus friends.
22 hours from NC in a rental car that wasn't even supposed to be out of the state of Florida
2001 and Peaches and Regalia are my favorite phish covers

100%
That being said they have mastered the compact jam. Get in get out get after it and keep em chomping lol
Saw both and shit my pants each time

10-31-16 is worth a spin. It gets pretty spacey.
10-28-21 it's the longest one of 3.0/(4.0) to date.
Sweet mother of all that is holy...I love you Trey...
(You're not bad either Page.)
The Muck Dog Gordo and fishman are pretty good too. Lol
Wooooo!!!
Love the Wurlitzer here! Good choice on the keys!!
It's fender rhodes... Page got the wurlitzer in 2010.
Mellow niceness...
PEW PEW
Nathan Jeffries Hahahaha
I want nothing more than for Fishman to drop into a 4-on-the-floor untz for a few bars here.... it's CRYING for a true disco beat.

I was present for this
The best 2001 they have EVER played.
7-17-98 is my #1, but this one is very high on my list as well
Back when you didn’t have to refinance your house to see a show
Man, I miss when Trey would just play funky rhythm like this and let the kids dance!
Time machines invented?...I'm going back...those Maine Mushrooms...wow
