My mom was a hoarder and she had two houses right across the street from each other. She wouldn't let us clean inside, unless it was washing dishes or something, but she allowed my husband and I to come over and spend two full Summers everyday cleaning her yards, because her hoard was starting to spill outside and she was embarrassed that the neighbors would see that. It was such heavy work that I ended up getting a frozen shoulder, but we couldn't get anyone to do that kind of work. Later after she passed away, my siblings, my husband and myself had to clean those houses and they were level 9's! We were all in our 60's at the time. We were able to get one company to clean 3 rooms for us, but they were not sorters. They just mostly, threw it all out and we paid 15 grand for that. It took us 6 months of working full time everyday to clean the rest of both those houses, plus two garages full to the ceilings, and a huge attic that was full height and ran the full length of my mom's house. It's been three years and I'm still recovering. The only good thing that came out of it was that it turned out that my dad had been a money hoarder and had hidden 7 different bank accounts that we didn't know about. My brother is a retired banker and was able to find them, plus because it was during the housing boom, we were very surprisingly able to get quite a bit of money for both of those properties. I miss my mom, but I don't miss that mess.

Then I saw you fold 7 hours of laundry and I thought, well I can go put that one load of laundry in the dryer. I dried that laundry right in it's face! That house was so pretty! I actually learned something quite useful from this video - the idea of just removing everything from an area and putting back only what you want to be there. Then dealing with the leftover clutter separately. The area itself is fixed, the leftover clutter is a smaller, more contained mess. I always get hung up and discouraged trying to figure out what to do with everything. Doing it your way gets you your space back right away.

I feel this! I’ve been finding a lot of adhd and autistic housekeeping/cleaning creators to help me get back into keeping my home in order! I’m glad it’s not just me. It’s especially embarrassing because I grew up on a farm where I was expected to clean my home and a few neighbors homes religiously since I was very young and also worked as housekeeper in high school on top of my other jobs where cleaning was part of my regular duties. Even now after I graduated college as a nurse cleaning patients and their areas to keep it tidy so it doesn’t drive them crazy (In oncology they’re there for longer periods and usually stressed so it does really need to be quite comfortable for them imo)
Then to come to my own home I own myself with my husband and let things get out of hand constantly felt so embarrassing 😓 the poor man was constantly picking up my half I felt like. He came from a much more privileged background and just learned to mop this year lol 😝 but in general is very helpful and tries his best and even now he feels bad because I am quite good at cleaning due to my upbringing I just was at a standstill and lacked a motivation (I now know was severe depression, anxiety, overwhelmed and undersupported). I was just undiagnosed for so long and told I had a moral failing by everyone but my husband who finally told me he thought I may have something and should see someone, now that I’ve finally (after almost a year of defying it) less of thing I have to fight and now want to work with. It’s just nice to follow people like this who understand and it has really helped me (in combination with therapy) get things back on track in my life all around and tidy in a way I can manage. Aside from communication and general stuff my husband has learned how to clean more effectively and easily as well since I did it for so many years I can finally help actually show him things a bit better instead of how I did when he first moved out which was more teaching him the survival basics lol 😂. Homeboy never been grocery shopping, did laundry, cooked. He’s good at most now and he loves cooking! He’s quick as a whip! ❤
I will say out of every one like this I follow this channel is my favourite because it’s the most relatable for having been married for such a long time, as a ND person, as someone who cleans a lot, someone I’m a marriage where my husband makes significantly more income and just etc. good advice in general. I love my parents but as a trans person who’s mom has cancer as well and is trying to love them through their biting nature for the time we have left it’s nice to have actual helpful advice instead of “it’s all in your head” and “try harder” and “your going to embarrass him one day and he’ll finally leave you”. Parents are people too but you know, it’s nice to see people being nice and to hear nice things. It’s not a replacement for that lack of love and respect in a personal life but sometimes hearing, reading or other words of affirmation and feeling of compassion helps for the lack of understanding elsewhere in our lives and allows us to feel steadfast in the things that are genuinely helping us feel better about ourselves and live our lives in a way that fulfills you.
I just didn’t know what any of it was. Being trans, having adhd, depression, autism, I didn’t know it wasn’t something I couldn’t just fix with working harder or not thinking about it because it’s what I was always told. I wasn’t failing, I just didn’t understand what it was, I still don’t in some ways as self critical and aware as I usually am and that’s ok. Some of my issues have nothing to do with diagnoses and etc. I’ll figure it out at least now I have support 😅 we all will figure out what we got going on. I forgot what I was on about. I was just really happy you found solace in this too and didn’t want you to get discouraged because I’m on that trip too rn and so far it’s going MUCH better! Don’t blame yourself for not being 💯 all the time, we’ve got this! ❤❤❤

I visited a family years ago when I was a teenager. I stayed for a week. It was a hoarder house like this. Not nasty; just so much stuff. Expensive & nice things. I offered to help my friend take a load of dirty clothes to the laundry room in the garage. She wasn’t expecting me to open the door from the kitchen to the garage. It was completely packed-hip to shoulder high-with just clothing. Dirty clothes. She, a teen, was trying to help her family cope but she couldn’t do as much as they needed. If there wasn’t clean clothes for the family, they just bought more. Obviously she was embarrassed but dismissed it. They had lots of status in the church & community. You’d never know how they lived like that.
Later, again, I’m come across people who will buy clothing, wear it once & throw it away instead of washing it. One lady had no idea that clothing could be washed & reused. I could never wrap my mind around that kind of lifestyle. Constantly buying clothes & things.

My Grandmother was a compulsive spender for clothes and when she passed she thought I would want to put them all in a boutique and sell them for her. I said no, please PLEASE don't. And she put it in her will. She passed in 2017 and I have boxes of her stuff in my house up to the ceiling 😭 and I don't even want to look at it because I just get heartbroken. My aunt who was an extreme hoarder died in late 2019 and thankfully left me nothing. My mother is unable to walk without extreme pain, my brother is a mentally challenged stoner/sponge who won't even put groceries away when I pay to have them delivered but will sneak around at 3am and eat them. My dad left when we lost our house when we could not rewrite the mortgage in 2011. So that leaves me as the only able bodied adult in my house of 3 adults and one child, (my nephew) and I work from home: 98 percent of the time I'm exhausted and miserable and still behind on housework but I try to focus on one room or major task a day. I will not escape the mess.

These videos really help me assess what I need/want and what I don’t. I’m a college student right now so I always try to keep my space presentation ready, before I go to sleep, before I leave for the day, before someone comes over. The space looks lived in, just aesthetically. I remember when I was kid though, with two siblings all living in one room, toys and clothing would stack up just like in this video and it would take hours to clean with constant encouragement from my Saint of a mother. It’s videos like this that further motivate me to be careful and methodical and remind me of a time when I didn’t have much control over the situation much like what I imagine these people feel. Though I hated cleaning as a kid because it took so long, I always was happy to have a clean room after and when I woke up in the morning I didn’t have to climb over toys to go eat breakfast and I didn’t have to struggle to find clean clothing. Now I’m happy all the time because I try my best to live in a clean environment. The relief and relaxation I feel in a clean environment always astounds me. Thank you for another wonderful video! So happy I am subscribed.

I enjoy watching these videos. I especially love that Jason works with you, on the job. You must have raised your kids right! I grew up in a filthy, cluttered home, just like some of the ones you show here. As you clean, I envision my childhood home, and think about how nice it was when clean , I even envision myself cleaning it all up now! That house sold in 2006, seven years after my mom passed. Dad sold it and all three of his kids helped him clear it out. I have been married 40 yrs, and keep a clean “lived-in” maximalist decor home. It’s not magazine worthy, but welcoming... just don’t go in my “catch-all” room. Currently, I’m recuperating from detached-retina surgery, but have many plans and ideas, to restore that room to a comfortable guest room. Thanks for the encouragement, and for the comfort your channel brings me. I am reconciling thoughts, habits, and issues that I’ve carried into my adult life, from my childhood... at 58 yrs old!

It was getting to the point where i somehow ended up with six bottles of syrup. So i took everything in my kitchen and put it in a pile on the floor. Then i put the larger gadgets like the air fryer in their spot. Then i put the pans closer to the stove. Then i gathered all the pasta in one pile, oatmeal in another, etc. Once i had them all together i took some storage bins and used them to separate things out so i could see and access what i have. Thanks for giving so much practical advice.

I'm like a combination of you AND your wife. I love to make order out of a chaotic mess, though, for whatever reason, I'm better with other people's messes than my own. I'm well known for going on a vacation and completely undoing a friend's kitchen and putting it all back together again. Sadly, I can also be a bit of a compulsive spender and collector. Right now I'm working on my own little messes here and there along with larger accumulations that I've been avoiding for too long. My goals (in order) are to:
    1. Get every room in my house clean and uncluttered one by one, by discarding or donating all excess.
    2. Organize all of the cabinets, drawers, and closets (getting rid of excess again).
    3. Maintain a clean and orderly home for at least 30 days before I...
    4. Make myself available to others in my area who are in need of this kind of help.
I hope that I will make it to Goal Number 4!
I tend to become overwhelmed by my own clutter and mess so I've not always been so reliable to take care of things in a timely manner once they get out of hand. However, since binge-watching many of your vids, I've begun utilizing your "just move something" and "the timer" methods. Like you, I have a bad back and, normally when I really clean, I will clean all day long, with almost no breaks at all, to the point that I cannot sleep at night for pain. Then I'm pretty useless for a day or two.
Using "the timer" method, and the "just move something" method, before I know it, the timer goes off and an amazing amount of work has been accomplished. Because I'm 50, and not in the best shape, I take a 30-minute break and, when the timer goes off, I do another 30 minutes of work. I have made huge progress so far with these methods. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Great Vids!

Omg I was trying to put my finger on why your humor was so hilarious for me. There's not a lot of humor that makes me laugh, because I'm very literal. The jokes usually have to come from out of nowhere or make literal sense for me to have and understand any kind of jovial reaction. I recently found out that I have autism. It all makes sense. It's funny hearing it from a different perspective. The people around me have always said I should be a comedian, because I have flat affect and thus my delivery is flat. Your jokes make me laugh^^! Also, I wanted to say that the work you do is so meaningful. As someone who has dealt with family members that "hoard" and have accumulated massive amounts of stuff my entire life, seeing these kinds of videos warms my heart. I wasn't very good a socializing even with family when I was younger, so my love language took on an "acts of service" air. I would end up deep cleaning my relative's/friends' houses for them. No matter how many times we (or friends or people from church) came in and cleaned things up, it always returned back to what you see in this video. She became very distrustful and would not let anyone in to clean up, because she was afraid we would throw something out that she thought was valuable. It was only after she ended up in a nursing home that we were finally able to go in and clean. She had a lot of trauma in her life and had a very hard life in general. Seeing the right after makes me sigh in relief. I know 4 hoarders and let me tell you, I don't always go see them for a few reason, one being the massive amount of clutter. My grandmother died in hospice but we had to clean her clutter with roaches...the feeling when it is 60% less clutter is so nice. All those cleaning videos make me declutter. I could have tendencies so I really force myself to declutter. Thank you for the awesome vids.

For some reason this house, out of all the houses you've done, really gave me flashbacks. I used to do childcare for a woman whose house looked like this. She had tons of clothes and clutter. I started cleaning up her stuff whenever the kids went down for a nap. I never threw anything away unless it was obviously trash, but I would fold, wash, organize, stack, etc. Of course, there was never enough time in a 1-2 hour nap to get much done, and the mess was neverending. But I enjoyed it.

Thank you for respecting maximalism! I am a maximalist myself and I cannot STAND when people try to push the minimalist lifestyle onto me because they think my collecting=hoarding. I keep all of my items off the floor, neatly organized on shelves; each shelf has its own purpose, and all shelves are pushed against the wall in order to keep floor space wide and clear. I don't collect trash. Anything dirty gets cleaned and put away immediately; in fact, I use the same 2 cups and plates. I cannot stand when my possessions break, but if it happens I either give it away or trash it.
I grew up in a household where the MOST important thing was cleanliness, regardless of what you kept in your space! As a kid I was very messy, but I think I was suffering from my (then undiagnosed) depression disorder, and I was also very overwhelmed with anxiety. My god I was messy lol. As an adult, I'm so glad my parents were obsessive with keeping the house clean; whenever I visit other adults and see their messy homes, I feel uncomfortable, and then I'm reminded I should clean my own space. It's so therapeutic to clean when you're at an age where you can really appreciate it.
Thanks again for always being so respectful. Your content has inspired me so much.

Hello dear Glenda, there's a reason or more reasons why these piles get created - like disability or trauma, or undiagnosed ADHD or other issues - until the root cause gets addressed, even deep cleaning will not help, because more new hoards will continue getting created. Hope you can get your needs met. Take care, dear

In my experience with helping folks clean and organize, sometimes compulsive spenders/ hoarders see all the empty space after the clean up and think they have more room to get more stuff. I hear so much of myself when you talk about how you deal with what you can and cannot do in some circumstances. You do a great job, I’m a new subscriber because you validate my feelings many times and it makes me feel better 😂

Mack: caught your reference in the video about office supplies -pens, notebooks, planners etc -In several of the organizing books I have read, I have seen a reference that people buy those things because they are trying to "buy time" ...not inherently as a compulsive spend, but rather as triggered step -"I am going to start a project, so I need a new notebook, pens, bins etc.". Just thinking with you.

I'm impressed by how clean the house is even though it is hoarded. The kitchen stove was astonishingly clean and when you swept the floor in the spare room it too was remarkably clean and when Jason swept the bathroom and kitchen floors, he picked up practically nothing so even though they have a lot of stuff they appear to be on top of things as far as cleaning their house. I haven't seen many hoarded houses that are this clean. This gives me hope that MAYBE your dream of their getting rid of a lot of stuff MIGHT just be something that they are willing to do.
I think your estimation of 50 to 100 pairs of pants this lady had might be seriously understated. I have nowhere near the amount of clothes that she has but once upon a time I apparently heard that QVC was in danger of going out of business so I sat out to single-handedly keep that from happening and I kept buying clothes like there would be no tomorrow. One day I decided to organize my closet and I grouped all my clothes by type and to my chagrin I had 60 pairs of pants. SIXTY and at the time I was retired and didn't even need to dress up very often. I immediately got rid of half of them so then I had ONLY 30 pairs but a short time later I cut that in half again and ended up with 15 pairs of pants which was a more reasonable number for an old lady who no longer worked and seldom got out of the house! If I had 60 pairs of pants, I would guesstimate that this lady had at least three times that number! I can't imagine spending seven hours folding my clothes! Maybe, like me, she was trying to keep some clothing store from going out of business!

    • @ahveganpizzabella
      @ahveganpizzabella Před 2 měsíci

Oh no, sorry for you and your mom :-( Sunds like she might be suffering from ADHD - has she been diagnosed? She sounds creative (racing mind on overdrive), spontaneous (compulsive spending and unexpected actions) lots of new ideas all the time, but never actually able to go through with the idea and finish it, because she loses focus quickly, gets bored and is already chasing the next much more exciting idea? Collects lots of things in piles for future use, but then forgets she even has the pile in the first place? Too excited for big projects in the future to do the daily, small, but "boring" tasks? Trouble with executive function? Sounds very familiar to a lot of ADHD people. Maybe you can look into that with her? The thing is that whatever she suffers from, it's a disorder, that can't be cured, only managed. It's very challenging to change behavior especially with a disorder like that. She needs help and can't change on her own. With correct diagnosis and behavioral therapy she might manage her life better. But until her issues (the cause) of her behavior are addressed and managed, her behavior will continue, it cannot be cured by one deep house cleaning. In the meantime you can help her house situation with her consent -if you can hire a regular housekeeper for her, just doing a bit of light cleaning every week, that will keep her bathroom, kitchen and laundry clean, safe to eat in and a bit less cluttered. But you need her consent so she doesn't feel attacked in her own house by a stranger or by you. How does that sound, what are your thoughts? I know it's not easy for you and your childhood has been hard with a parent suffering like that and making you miserable 😢

You are very inspiring and your voice over really helps to explain how to get out of the predicament you're cleaning up ( and makes me laugh). We live in a small house with small closets. I've been wanting to get my clothing situation under control for awhile but didn't have time. I've been retired for 2 months now and finally got it done. I was able to get three under bed tubs down to two. The rest fits in a closet and wardrobe. I'm not minimalist either. I like a variety of clothing and an artsy lived in style in my house. Your videos have taught me how to have this without being overwhelmed with stuff. Thanks for what you do and explaining it all to us. ❤
