Let see when the British fight France had happen? Yes, the French eventually won the Hundred Years' War. They fully defeated the English at the Battle of Castillon in 1453. The War of the Fifth Coalition was fought in 1809. It was fought by a coalition of the Austrian Empire and the United Kingdom against Napoleon's French Empire and Bavaria. France won the war. The Napoleonic war? Both sides get some alliance with other countries. The French became powerful very fast and conquered most of Europe but then lost quickly after the French invasion of Russia failed.
The Napoleonic Wars ended with the Second Treaty of Paris on 20 November 1815, just after the huge Battle of Waterloo, a large battle that the French lost. But nice fantasy..

When England, very sensibly, brought in the help of the rest of the British Isles, we made short work of the French at every turn. France may have won a few land battles, predominantly against other mainland Europe based armies, but they certainly didn't bring us to any surrender table in 1809. We were constantly at war with them from their revolution until their double capitulations in 1814 & 1815 (except for the short lived peace of Amiens where both sides just rearmed). We were always in the fight until it was done & the French got beat.

People always judge France by its performance in WW2. 20 years prior to that France didn't surrender at all and had the bulk of fights in their territory and that's always overlooked. It is easy to judge but French decided it is not worth to send millions of their best men to death trying to overpower Germans when they were in their best condition and return to the fight when odds are better. And let's not start talking about France's prior military achievements. France was and still is a major land superpower. WW2 for France was a flop because of the mistakes of high command.
And while in the topic - UK didn't surrender because for them there wasn't really that much of existential threat by not surrendering. Germans couldn't reach them because of Royal Navy but UK surrendering would lose too much - they probably would have to give up their colonies or at least a major chunk of them. They would lose influence in Europe etc all of this is very significant for a relatively small island country

This joke is at best overused but in reality extremely offensive. France was truly devastated by WW1. It's understandable that a country would not want to send so many of their young men to their death once again and so soon when they really wanted 14-18 to be the last great war. The morale just was not there from the beginning.
