      @MFKR696 Před 4 lety +1

      @@jvmiller1995 Indeed. It also bears mentioning that anything over 1500hp is kinda wasteful (and dangerous) for on-road use. Once you get up into the area of 2 or 3000+ hp, you're just gonna be breaking traction (and drive-train parts for that matter) all the time, especially if it's pushing out the typical 2.5 lb/ft per hp, which is counterproductive to say the least lol. It also bears wondering how much power even a doubled-up/boxed truck frame will put up with before it breaks in half. Semi frame-rails may be made of tempered steel, but tempered steel has a draw-back. It's brittle, so it doesn't bend or stretch. It just snaps.

    @magna8656 The screws in these blowers are clearly seen @6:49. The only problem that I am having with this setup is that I think that it would require about 1600 hp to drive the eight blowers on top via the common shaft down the middle of the manifold and I only see one belt assigned to that task. Even if the blowers were really under-driven, I have my doubts about one belt doing the job even with a stock sub-2400 rpm redline.

    • @tomreisinger6220
      @tomreisinger6220 Před 2 lety

      I'm glad someone else noticed,this thing is a joke, generally when you Dyno test an engine it changes tone when load it, as for the blowers 2 of 3 on the front have what maybe 6 teeth of contact with the cogbelt, not much power needed there , interesting craftsmanship, but this level of power can be achieved by a 3406 or kt 1150 with a single turbo, added bonus you could close a hood and not be so obnoxious, even GM 2 strokes had these things called mufflers

    @adv512 First of all, this was a dyno run. That means it did have a load on it. A load of nearly 3500 hp, which at a typical 71 series speed of 2200 rpm is 8,300 ft-lbs of torque. Second, lots of tugboats used multiple 71 series Detroits driving one or two screws. Lastly, they aren't superchargers, they are blowers. Those blowers are often used as superchargers on 4-stroke engines, but in their original application on these 2-cycle Detroits they do not produce boost, hence are not superchargers.

      @lickadsplit3317 Před 10 lety +12

      Josh LaDue You must not know much about 2 stroke diesels...the blowers on these engines aren't there to supply boost, they're there to scavenge the cylinders. You also must not know much about show pieces. I seriously doubt he really cares how much power it makes. It's more about the fact that he hand-built it and it starts and runs.

    • @markholtrop8561
      @markholtrop8561 Před 10 lety +3

    For those of you commenting about the butterfly valves not affecting RPMS, this is not a gas, but a diesel engine. RPM and power output is controlled by the injector pump. At idle, the motor uses little air and therefore closing the butterfly valves will have no effect. Why the butterfly valves in the first place? Search youtube for runaway diesel motor. The butterfly valves will stop that motor in runaway condition.

  • @samspade8367
    @samspade8367 Před 3 lety

    In this dyno test vid it appears that the butterflies on the eight visible air intakes are unrelated to engine rpm. They are nearly wide open with the engine at idle and are not synchronized. I suspect that the gingerbread on top, while cool looking, is unrelated to the actual fuel/air supply and probably are just idler pullies with no impellers inside the blower cases. He walks to the right side and reaches into the center area to rev the engine by hand and again the butterflies don't move until he reaches up and closes then opens them again with no change in rpm. The functional blowers and injectors must be hidden beneath all the eye candy. I would love more technical info and less carnival side show barker from Mr. Harrah. Amazing creation!

    • @IndomnitableForceofNature
      @IndomnitableForceofNature Před 2 lety

      It would seem that way, though I believe you may be mistaken. He’s using drag racing components. At the very front of the intake cowls are first a set of secondary butterflies. These can be used to manually trim total air volume to match the atmosphere (density, humidity, barometric pressure all factors). Below the blowers there is a primary set of throttle bodies and injectors that actively control throttle air/fuel mixture and intake. These engines are essentially massive air pumps, the air fuel mixture and total volume takes a lot of fine tuning. Hope that makes sense.

    This looks like some sort of promotional Gimmick to me. I Don't believe all the blowers are operational. You can't hear the blower whine and it sounds like an NA engine.
    The blower belts appear to come through the inlet manifold that the blowers are supposedly pressureising. Also at one point he shuts the butterflies on the bug catchers and the engine dosen't change note a bit. If it were running through them then closing them would be noticeable as even at idle this thing would be pulling a lot of air in being a diesel. The original V24's had turbos which would make a lot more sense and be infinately cheaper and easier to build than this thing. Another reason I have severe reservations about the legitimacy of this thing.
    Are there any other vids of this thing in action? Until I see something else that allays my suspicions, I'm calling this one FAKE.

      Well, it is a Detroit 24v71 which is automatically a dual biturbo twin supercharged engine at around 1800 horse, designed to have that horse consistently at full rpm for hours straight, they probably are functional, but as this vehicle will not run without at least two forms of forced induction, and is two 12 cylinders butted together to make 24 ...it's prolly real, just useless, and a waist, detroits use old tech, a cummins qsk50 16 cyl with no supercharges, just dual biturbo, can create 2700 hp straight from cummins, and with the right cummins pull list, can produce what you want

    It sucks that this is all show. Those blowers don't work. You can't pressurize the manifold and have holes for blower belts. NONE of the butterflies work with the engine. And you can see that when he flips them open and closed. And it is definitely two 12cyl engines connected via shaft and not a single 24 cup engine. The list goes on and on. Looks cool. But any real gear head is going to walk as soon as they see the bullshit. But whatever floats his boat. It's his dollars and credibility.

Later high-performance versions were available with turbochargers, and turbochargers with intercooling, the turbochargers discharging into the Roots blower intake. Hence why a two stoke diesel with a blower is still considered a naturally aspirated engine it will not run without a blower unless it has

    @Possumliving Před 13 lety

    @Possumlivingdotcom In short, a 2-stroke won't run without a blower. The piston uncovers the intake ports at the bottom of its travel. In a Detroit Diesel, which does have a cam that drives exhaust valves in the head, this is also when the exhaust valves are open, so the blower also pushes the exhaust gasses out to scavenge the cylinder. On these engines, this is considered to be naturally aspirated. You can turbocharge them, and GM did build factory turbo Detroits. But they still have a blower.

    • @neggym
      @neggym Před 9 lety +2

      ***** Well i really don`t know what to think of it. Of cause it seems unlogical if the intake were made from wood. But here`s some doubts about it.
      Why don`t you see the material from wich the intake is fabricated in the video. Perhaps cause the wood really is a template, and some cnc shop has fabricated the parts for the intake...
      At 7.23 in the video. The "metal" surface of the intake seems fake. Why are there printing on it, looks like some kinda foil/dynamat was put on.
      The hole in the end of the manifold. You can see how thick the material is, in that hole. Seem strange to fabricate the manifold in such thick material. it would be quite heavy.
      The thickness look very similar to those wooden plates they built the template of. And look at all the screws on the egdes, Id have the parts welded together.
      And why go all tha trouble of making a template. Surely it would be possible to measure your way out, and have it cnc cut from those mesurements.
      Furthermore as other mentioned. Doesn`t seem to be that blower sound, that along with the slots for the pulley belts, wich in no way can hold the charging pressure. And perhaps that i find it doubtfull that a single belt from the crankshaft, can manage to drive 6 fully charging blowers, without ripping.
      So many things seems sketchy about this, but on the other hand. Its a hell of a lot work to do for something fake.. I really don´t know what to believe.
