    Love the way you plan your trip. It's good to see someone else that doesn't meal plan. I've always based our meals on what's on sale or I can find a bargain on. That's how I stock the pantry too.

    You can place a bulk order with an Aldi store manager. They order extras of the items in and let you know when it’s ready. I did a yearly shop for all my basics I get from Aldi. Some things weren’t available at the time but it helped the store with keeping their stock levels up and you being able to buy in bulk. I park my car at the loading dock and go in and pay then they open the back door and I load my car up. Very easy and convenient. I rang head office to see if I could do that and they were very happy for me to do that. I simply told the store manager I already spoke with head office.

    Sweetheart what you need is an old fashioned pie safe . It's open at the top but it has wire covering thefront allowing circulation. It has doors that can be locked and this would allow anything. You need to proof or cool to be done so by putting it in there and locking the doors. That way the bush rats can't get in. This allows you also to use the bottom for storage with doors that can be locked. When these were a popular piece of kitchen storage they were made of wood. This could be fortified with tin for better security.

    I saw big cans of tomatoes at Costco yesterday. I’d been to two other shops b4 hand and was eating a slice of pizza in the car at 2.30 pm. As I was, I was looking at my receipt and noticed I’d been charged $29 twice for an item I bought one of. Went back in and ended up getting refund, thankfully after they went and checked with two other workers. I said you can come and check my groceries in the car if you like. The third person said just give it to her. So grateful to have found the error while still on the premises. $29 is indeed $29 and not to ignore. I still need to get meat but could not be bothered yesterday nor today. You are great doing all you do to get supplies. A meat safe would be great. If hubby could build a large long one or a tall one it would be so useful for multiple uses and stop mice getting stuff. I need to tidy supplies here. The odds shelve is so messy, you know the seldom used one ofs. This last 6 weeks has gone fast. Sometimes here, I hear, there is nothing to eat. To which I say there are tons of ingredients you just have to make something to eat!

Since there are tons of deals in store early in morning, I go at six when they first open, pick up the manager specials and work it out when I get home. I have groceries delivered, too, and I never thought I would ever do that. I enjoy grocery shopping...always have. But with each passing day I am becoming more disabled that I had to. If I'm running in for just 2 items I do it when I am out but for bi-weekly shopping I don't. When I started having delivery they said if they have to substitute you will pay nothing more (if the item is more expensive than what you wanted). Now they changed it and I would have to pay the difference. So when it asks if I want substitutes it's a definite no. Luckily there are 5 Walmarts in my area and if one doesn't have it the other will. When I signed up for free delivery it was 1/2 price for a year which is why I did it. Now, in November it will be full price and I'll have to weigh the pros and cons to see if I want it. So far it's pro. Free delivery and free shipping on anything.

    I currently have 6 kids at home ages 2-15. I tried doing a fortnightlt grocery shop but i found we'd run out of several things and no money to restock. So i started shopping weekly. And im struggling to work ou how to transition to monthly shops without breaking our budget (we are surviving off Centrelink payments and paying off a mortgage ($1200 a month) so money is tight.
    I buy our fruit in bulk from a "ma and pa" fruit and veg shop, and i like to keep rice, oats, tined beans and tinned tomato in bulk but i can't seem to make it work as well as bills and mortgage. (We have no other debt. No credit cards etc) our budget is set to around $450 a week. Sometimes less. I spend $350-$400 at ALDI and $50-$100 at Woolworths.

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  Před 7 měsíci

      There was definitely a gradual change as I went, a strict inventory of what was on the shelves before I left and I was going fortnightly initially before drawing it out to monthly and then 6 weekly.
      I think a big thing is the inventory. You have to know how much you go through to be able to plan how much you need, but you also then have to portion it. We eat well and good sized meals but I definitely portion out things like meat and stuff so that we will have enough to get through.
      It probably depends on your kids too! In our house the snacks are prob a bit diff to most, I buy a good 12-20kg of carrots each shop and they’re a big snack item, I buy fruit in bulk and once it’s too ripe to keep on the bench, I freeze or can it and they eat it straight from frozen.
      I make a lot of smoothie pops and savoury snacks, crackers, boiled eggs, flatbreads etc
      We have a basic pantry that I then make creative too, I find by buying less items but more of each, it allows us to save money but forces some creativity.
      But I also think that time is the big thing. On an average day, nothing fancy (for us) it can easily take me 1-1.5 hours to cook each meal.
      Yesterday we had pork mince that I pulled out of the freezer (I had previously ground it and frozen it) I made a batch of breakfast sausage seasoning, cooked it off with that, then made a batch of flatbread dough, cooked a dozen eggs up to scramble with the pork (and normally would add black beans I had canned but I’ve run out). Rolled out 24 flat breads (3 each) and cooked them all off, made mayo from scratch and then served… that’s a fairly simple meal, but it’s time consuming…

      I definitely think Aldi's prices are good for specialty as you say, I just get a bit frustrated that everything comes in fairly small packaging. Being able to visit costco was one of the main reasons I started the travel, even just the bakers flour (when they have it) and the chicken and mince is a good reason to go, but coconut oil/olive oil/some spices etc are all really cheap there too, you just have to know your prices and not go crazy.
