Had this issue on my 2004 R170 230. I didn't bother checking the relay, I just bought this part, fitted it in literally 30 seconds and roof now works perfectly. Thank you so much for this. video 👍
Did you buy a new relay switch, is that the part you're referencing. My daughters slk is driving her 70 yr old mum into an early grave.
@@ddmcpaisley6299 yes I bought a new relay switch off ebay. Probably the easiest fix I have ever done to a car. Literally removed the cover in the boot, removed old relay and fit replacement. Roof opened as it should. Before I replaced the relay, when I operated the roof switch, windows went down, boot opened, roof clamp released, then nothing. Pump still running bot nothing happening. After replacing the relay, roof worked perfectly. Relay was about £12. Might be able to get cheaper ones, but I'm delighted with the result for that price.
I had a 320slk, i never had a problem with the roof. The car was 21 years old when i sold it. I would put the roof up and down every day. Its the lack of use that stops this roof from working.

Has it stopped starting for you, yet -- do you put the key in the ignition and turn it with all the dashboard lights illuminating as normal but the engine simply won't turn over? Then, a day or 3 later, it starts up without issue only to have this same scenario repeat itself -- several days if starting without issue only to have it not start for 1-3 days. Then, starting for a few days, then not starting. It seems to be a very common issue for the '98-'03 230 slk, but after garage visits and parts replacements, it happens again. EVERYTHING operates as normal when turning the key, except starting. ALL of the usual susoects for this have been eliminated by repair/replacement.
I saw that you had to help the roof a littlebit when you wanted to open it. I have the same issue. Do you have any tips to fix that aswell?
Hello. I clean and condition the seal between the roof top and windshield. Also I oiled/grease the roof locks, but now it seems that it’s not locking correctly. Before it was fine. I had to clean my channels, because a little water will drip. It was clog.

Just caught this I have a 230 SLK and have had issues in the past,. One issue was if the ABS sensor stop working the roof doesn't work either. the cover in the trunk is essential to check also, I had a problem which was down to that not being located.

I had an SL and dealt with every convertible top issue you can imagine. Happiest day of my life was when I sold that piece of shit down the road. The last well built mercs where around 1989. It's been all down hill since then.

Can also try running the pump with the pressure valve open (the brass hex screw on hydro pump) and then tighten and close valve completely and that can then act as a mini air bleed and get the top moving.
Hello I am asking this question again for some reason I don’t see my comment, i’m asking it again plus another question, when I bought my car it’s a, SLK 320 2004, it didn’t come with a charcoal canister looking to put another one in. Don’t have anything to go on as far as what hoses hook up to what, would you be able to show a good video how it is in place, also refilling the reservoir for the hydraulic fluid for the convertible. Thank you.

I have a 2002 SLK32 and my roof works but it sticks when it first starts to open just like yours in the video. I noticed you had to give a gentle push to start. What did you find or due to correct that?
Yep we had to take my son's in to get it fixed about a month ago now it works perfect but it cost 468 to get it fixed

Hey i waswondering if you will ever to do a tutorial on running dow the hydraulic for the sunroof part my back opens fine but the sunroof part wont i hear like a click sound like its stuck or the latch wont open. Nice video, especially the relay test. However, everyone considering buying a used SLK should carefully research the Rube Goldberg contraption Mercedes passes off as a folding hardtop. I'm into this nightmare for about five hours, and the quarter windows are still permanently in the down position. There does not seem to be a fix on the web that actually solves this problem, although it seems to be widespread. Kind of hating this car right now.
I had the same problem. Little windows stayed down....but not all the time. I peeled back the trim at the fender pillar behind the seats. Found connector and disconnected. Put 12 volts to it and voilais!! Windows up! It's an intermittent problem. Mercedes cars have minds of their own. Hope this helps.

In my slk 230 year 1999. Sometimes, not always, it happens to me that when I want to save the roof, the trunk opens but the roof is not saved. It can also happen to me the other way around, when I want to put the roof on, the trunk opens but the roof does not unfold…..

Today my baby’s hard top ( 1998 SLK230 ) stopped working in the middle of the closing process and it started leaking hydraulic fluid on the passenger’s side of the top. How do I get to that leaking section and fix it? Do I need to remove the lining?

@@jekris I had the hydraulic pump replaced. I wanted to replace all of them but ended up replacing only one. The lining had to be removed to access them. It works fine until the next one goes down. I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

Hello, I have a 06 SLK 350, the pump was empty due to an oil leakage on the top roof cylinder. I repair the cylinder and Add oil to the pump, the pump has a + sign on it so I left the oil a little below the plus, the system is working but it seems to weak. Do you think the oil has to be above the + sign?
How do I refill the hydraulic fluid? Can you tell me how maybe a picture on how to do it.

My 2004 SLK roof got stuck as I was closing it. I followed a youtube tutorial and was able to close the roof and everything manually, but the trunk won’t close. It won’t open either, its locked from the lock but there is a gap keeping it still open. Any advice?
Trying to open/close from the buttons gives me an error “boot is open”.

Parking brakes on, trunk lid down with the thing out & locked in position.
I'll pull back on the leaver or button & windows go down & back part comes up but then it stops.
The top or roof doesn't move. Any thoughts.

My roof stopped functioning and I had to close the roof manually. Now the boot won't raise when I attempt to raise the roof. I am not receiving an error signal from the roof switch. I recently added hydraulic fluid to the pump (the proper Mercedes fluid.) Any thoughts?

Just replace all the roof cylinders and main pump with Top Hydraulics replacements, just keep an eye on pump fluid level, and no more issues....ever!

Hi, i have problem about my hydraulic, whats the problem when i push switch to up, all the windows is down, i hear the relay sound ia click, but the hydraulic is no function , hydraulic no sound, i have replace all new 5 lid cylinder, i have refill the new hydraulic fluid. But until now i still thinking what the problem. After i replace all the lid cylinder, it can open normally about 20 times i think, but at last this week, it can't open it anymore. Can you tell me what the problem? Is it hydraulic pump is fault? May the hydraulic pump can fault? If yes, is it the pump can repair?

@@medenz I'm going to try taking the car apart and attach 12v to the power lead of each window. Then when they're up, I'm going to treat the car as a fixed hardtop for evermore.

The wire in the right side of the car near the side window was shorted about 5 centimeter after I changed the wire it is working now
if back window motor goes , is there away to get roof off?
Have you noticed your serpentine belt squeal when you use the roof? Sometimes the belt squeals when I turn my car on and sometimes it doesn’t. When I bring the roof up the serpentine belt squeals. If this has happened to you have you been able to fix it?
You need a new serpentine belt and tensioner. This car has two belts.

I just bought a 99 slk 230 hard top and the top isn't working. I can hear the motor trying to work but i don't think the lock is unlocking at the windshield. I have the allen wrench that fits in the top but i went to try to turn clockwise to unlock and it is very stiff and I don't want to break anything. Can I unlock it manually this way or am I missing a step like do I have to release the air out of the hydrualics? any help is greatly appreciated!
Try and nudge it loose with your hand when doing this. It's just wedged in there...

Hi there, I've got a problem with my `95 A124 Mercedes, after replacing seals in the cylinders of the main hood lifters, the roof does not open. I had to let it replace, coz the left one was leaking badly (my mechanic replaced both sides just to be sure). The one that (un)locks the roof was replaced last year (received new seals too). Hydraulic fluid was topped up to maximum level (original one from MB). Now when I try to open the roof, the rear lock opens but the roof part where the glass window is lifts very very slow, and if finally rises so the front part can rise nothing happens. The button to open the roof blinks (I think even right from the moment on i pull it to open). Did you have such situation, do you know what the reason might be? Te engine runs when I operate the roof and I'm in P mode of course.
I looked at my 1998 slk 230 and checked all of these things but all seemed to be ok. I then noticed that my boot (trunk for those across the pond) and found the locking system ie the barrel (black in colour and about 6 i ches long from the lock) was sticking. Once I moved it into the correct position to shit the boot.... Hey presto the roof worked. Must be a sensor which stops boot/lid from working. Good luck it worked for me.

you need to unscrew on top of the reservoir a small screw. watch it since it can easyly fal somewhere bad. its behind the lines on top. you ned imbus for that. also buy a needle since its so little space you cant reach it normally without puting the plastics off the trunk.
I'm trying to find an SLK in a 6 speed manual and silver, black or blue. I found a red one. , nice looking , but not really my color. The manual transmission are RARE in the USA..

These units can ge broke down into tge different which means if the motor goes it can ge replaced separate to the pump. But at £250 for pump and motor and £150 if tge unit getting faulty abd ut nit just oil level £250 ($320) is not expensive
The roof of my 98 slk is sticking !! When opening the windows go down, boot opens, roof starts to disengages from top of windscreen but then struggles ????? I then need to help it a little pushing up on the roof and it then starts going again, and folds away. Closes no probs.
So not sure if its the claws that clamp onto top of windscreen or hinges on frame that are to blame ??
Known issue. Try greasing the points where it connects to the top of the windshield

Fill it to low line at least. Mercedes sells the specific fluid based on your vin#

I’m thinking an extractor the tool used to remove oil but use the brake bleeder part of it to force it in thru the one opening hidden nicely by Mb with the check ball in it! Or even a turkey baster ha ha

I don't know but my MB certified garage just charged me $1400 to replace the hydraulic fluid in a '99 slk 230
So what was the fix in your case? becasue i face the same thing. Im thinking about so check all the microswitches because i bought a new pump and there was no change
Reggie-Boy Rood did you check the relay? Also the sensor for the trunk sleeve could be not engaging or defective. Check your fuse, check the switch in the car. Is it flashing red when you attempt to lower the rooftop?
iRepair Autos hi. Thanks for the reply. Relay I replaced with the otherone that came with the pump. Everything works. But the hood will stop going further on the half when it's opening. I'm not able to close it either

Relay works. I tried opening today and the pump just stops halfway. Sometimes when I press the button again its makes a noise or nothing at all.

On mine triangolar glass don't come don't go down. What could be the cause. Connecting directly to the battery works fine.
It could be a number of things. Relay, the sensor in the trunk etc, The button in the cabin, vacuum lines running from the reservoir.
Still no assistance on how to add fluid into that reservoir when there is no cap.
I have 1 slk 230 kompressor buth the peaple say is to ard to fix.

Nobody seems to know how to add fluid in SL55 in the trunk when there is no cap???
I’m gonna guess it’s the only one that depresses with a ball check valve in it. I bought a suck/push pump so we’ll see when I get home. Using a funnel didn’t work guess u got to shoot it in. All my others had caps u unscrew

I was just fixing my top and my changer is in the way. I’ve never actually seen inside that panel until your video because the changer completely covers it. Bad design Mercedes!
Are you Scotty Kilmer's brother by a different mother? This video rates up there with the mind numbing life hack videos. A relay is a switch, it has 2 circuits, 1 to switch on and off and 2 to directly feed power to (usually) a high current draw device, so you can run power across each circuit to hear if it's clicking or not. What's with the " I'll destroy my relay with a resistance test"? Second. you didn't bother mentioning your window limit issue, the reason your windows don't go fully up. You mention the trunk blind micro switch but what about the other 7 micro switches in the circuit? When you tire of hack mechanics, try politics.
