In the last Make it Real video • How Do You Make Captai... , we showed you how we made this awesome electromagnet arm bracer that Captain America uses in Marvel’s Age of Ultron. Now, we test it and a replica shield from Machina Props to it’s limits.
Ever wonder what it would be like to have the power of magneto strapped to your arm combined with Captain America’s symbolic shield? We did. So we decided to find out. Catching, throwing, shielding, smashing, shooting, running through walls, punching though doors, funny cats! We do it all for your entertainment.
This is one of the best and most fun projects to date. The electromagnet arm bracer is wicked powerful. The electromagnets are available on Amazon (fave.co/1q68uGK). Each electromagnet is rated for 1200N (260lbs) at 12v. We have been running them at 72v for an estimated total force of 14400N (over 3000lbs). Yeah, that is enough force to rip your arm off and then sucker punch you with said severed arm. At 6x the rated current, the electromagnets over heat quickly and can only be run for short periods of time. It uses a set of lithium-polymer batteries from Hobby King (fave.co/1VycT2u) running in series. To holster the shield on the back of the jacket, we used to neodymium magnets from amazon (fave.co/1skm9Mc). These things are scary powerful but super fun to play with. If you get your own, be careful because they will crush your hand!!!

There's no practical use for it aside from doing exactly what they are doing. Its probably expensive to make and its a world of liability claims. Lol! I can just see some 10 year old getting his head cut off because a metal shield flew at his head.
And in real world applications, magnet cling only works with two attractive surfaces so it limits a lot. I tried putting a few Rare Earth magnets in a leather holster to keep a hammer or hatchet easier to access in the woods. I was constantly having to manage my hatchet and ended up just lashing it to the holster. Then I forgot and got near my truck and the hatchet and holster immediately latched to it.

Hey, @Hacksmith Industries, you know what would be an even better invention than this one? The answer to that is to make the Disc Armor from Rygar in real life. Basically, it is one part a shield like the one that is in the video and one part Chinese flying guillotine, or, more accurately, the Blade Shield that Cao Ren has in the Dynasty Warriors/Shin Sengokumusou games, but with a circular shield, blades on its rim, and a chain to pull the shield back to its wearer.

Great project, very cool. With that said, I would have used a welding type magnet with a switchable magnetic field and added a little servo motor to turn the handle. Put about 6 of them together to make the same rig with no need for batteries and unlimited life.
But wouldn't the constant hits from the shield ultimately ruin the magnets if done like that?
