If you’re not on social media… then photography is alive & well.
For hobbiest
Even if you are on social media, photography and every other kind of art is still alive. It is your own decision whether social media is simply a lookbook of YOUR art - the kind of art that comes from your heart. Or whether you create art with which you want to get the attention of others at all costs.
Social media made some famous photographers…
photo on social media has been the worst superficial experience.
@@TheGuym619social media made those photographer famous on social media
Photography has and will continue to get me out of the most difficult phases in my life. Its like an old friend who i can rely on every time.
Amen to that!
+1
Me too!
my camera never lets me down! (well until it needs a repair lmao)
usually after heartbreaks I tend to make my best work
The way you said "who cares? Nothing." around 2:50... that went straight into my heart. My personal favourite photos are the ones I've never showed to anyone.
Part of the solution for me was not posting things on social media anymore. It felt like it was becoming a job, like I had to take images to impress other people not because I enjoyed it.
I really enjoy and have fun taking pictures of my friends and family when we hang out, and got a decent printer and love sending people nice photos in the mail. It feels fulfilling and it captures nice memories.
And the idea of going to shoot a sunrise really encapsulates it. Photography can get you out there. It can push you to the places you might usually not care to go to, at hours you might usually not be up, and when you’re there you’re just… present. Looking, feeling. It’s so much more than just mass producing “bangers” and sharing them on social media.
I agree - social media placed so much stress on me.
Peter Mckinnon: take a photo of the sunrise for no other reason but to take it, and do nothing with it... and then show all the sunrise photos in a video about doing nothing with the photos.
Would have been more poinant had the video shown him taking a bunch of photos, and then abruptly end without him showing us the actual shots.
I hope to get a printer. It feels like the next logical step for me. So far Ive managed to keep social media posts to a minimum and I like it that way. I understand that its different when its a business and why I probably never will turn it into a business.
The video is also just calculated and actually hypocritical. Total double standards.@@SteveJobIess
I stopped posting on social media 4 or 5 years ago
I fell in love with photography when I was 12. That was 60 years ago. I ran a photography department at a small college for 30 years. While the tools have changed, my passion has not.
Yeah, very much with you, age and inspiration-wise! Returning to this after a long related career... and, yes, it's still fun! And rewarding emotionally, when you believe you've captured a great moment!
I started with 15, that was 37 years ago. So I would say, Sir, I'm a kind of a junior. But I still love it!
me too, that was 2 years ago for me
@@JT-oc2dn What is the sense of the question? It is about passion, and that's for free...
@@Schattendichter Just asking if bro became a milli from his passion. Free is not free. He paid in time invested. Mr peter did.
Photography got overshadowed with reels/shorts/tiktok.
Fortunately Casey’s shorts didn’t overshadow this little pearl of a short movie :)
Totally agree and it s up to us to continue to continue photography because shorts / reels and tik tok will not last!
We lost our platforms to short form video.
That explains why i hate watching tiktok hahaha... pointless video and not aesthetically pleasing...
No, you’re just thinking that “instagram=photography” and that was really never the case.
As an introvert photography has become a way for me to record all the instances in my life that have been outside my comfort zone. It gets me out in the world and it documents it. When we do things that are uncomfortable they tend to slow time down and with photography it lets you document this moment in time to relive later. Its truly a great hobby.
That thought of "what am i going to do with the photos after" or maybe "do i really need a picture of a sunrise" essentially "what can i gain from this" is what kills off motivation for a lot of people because the answer is almost always not good enough or isn't heavy enough to balance out the effort it takes to get up and get out there... but as we get older i think we are more wired to only do things and see worth in things you can gain something from like money, or to progress your career in some way... it's a shame we see fun as a waste of time or not worth making an effort for.
So the question is: do I do it for a special purpose (like earning money) or because it adds meaning to my life?
You can't monetize the latter, but it's so much more valuable
I want photos about a life, not a life about photos.
Nicely said
very nice!

What does that even mean lol

I missed this kind of content from you. You’re so cool and stylish but I love it when you create these kinds of intimate vids. Thank you.
This, exactly this, is the type of content I want to see as the future of CZcams-storytelling that evokes emotions. Not just fast-paced retention editing or Iman Ganzhi's style (I don't hate the guy; it's his unique style, but it's being overused by everyone). This reminded me why I fell in love with video editing.
So, thank you.
Thanks Peter ! Thanks a ton ! It made restart it again , a fresh new creative start !
My mother used to love my shots a lot and she always supported me , She expired on the 25th of April this year !! I am going through the darkest phase of my life where people lose all the faith from everything and mostly lose everything !! I was sad until I saw this video and it started the creative fire inside me to again start what I left before.
I'm 24 now ! I make sure that “photography” will always be there along with me forever!

Photography for me is my best friend, when I’m feeling down in life I go out taking photos and my worries go away, the world gets silenced. One of the best hobbies in life is photography
This is far more interesting to watch Peter than half the junk up on YT. Also consumerism has just slapped us in the face with low quality videos smacked at us daily. The best days were when I was so curious about photography and I watched so many of your videos to teach myself even when I didn't have a camera bought I still watched your videos to learn how to edit, Will never stop watching you!
Every time I find myself in a slump, be it a lack of creativity or just lack of motivation, you always seem to bring out a video dealing with exact problem and it pulls me right back in. My passion for photography has taken a backseat to work and other hobbies as of late and it’s had me feeling depressed as if my passion was dying. You always seem to find the right words to say at the right moment Pete. Thank you for being you, and inadvertently being there when I’m looking for an answer🏴☠️📷
Oh how your videos always hit home!! I do miss my photography, it's been 3 years since I've been behind my camera and I miss it every single day!
Thank you Pete, it’s easy to forget that I love taking the photo, even when they don’t turn out or I don’t use them for anything, I love the adventure of finding what looked great in a singular moment.
I took my first photo - of an elephant, when I was 8 years old. I am 75 now and still taking photos! I have a number of cameras, nearly all bought used from good outlets and find that it is my my creative input, however good or not that may be that makes all the difference. Don’t believe the hype that you need the latest camera or a certain number of pixels to take good photos, you don’t. It is all down to having an ‘eye’ and good composition. Think about a scene before you press that button and consider how to make it better. Even using a phone camera you can take fantastic shots!
Peter, if I may, a short essay by C. S. Lewis absolutely nails your questions around 3 mins. The essay is called "The Weight of Glory". Here's a killer quote as to why I believe there's this ebb and flow within the creative arts: "We do not want merely to see beauty, though, God knows, even that is bounty enough. We want something else which can hardly be put into words - to be united with the beauty we see, to pass into it, to receive it into ourselves, to bathe in it, to become part of it." It's ultimately an eschatological answer. Please feel free to hook me up. God bless, Nick.
i just read this essay, what an amazing piece of work from the great CS Lewis, thank you so much for sharing this, i wouldn't have known about its existence otherwise. Truly changed my perception of what exactly we are chasing as photographers/ artists, and the realisation that i might never catch the thing im chasing but i'll just have a few glimpses of it throughout my life, and its these glimpses that i should treasure.
Love that quote.
@@jippehiemstra my pleasure! Glad you were able to read it. If I may, Lewis’ essay is forcing us to think beyond where the very best creatives (and all of us!) typically “cap out” - ie at a sense of sheer wonder but also dissatisfaction at the sunrise etc., and needing to somehow do more than capture it; even setting the camera down to ‘be’ in the moment isn’t enough. The unsettling desire that’s within us as image-bearers of the LORD is, as Lewis says, that: “If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.” 🙏
@@harrygilsphotovideo ditto
@@jippehiemstra in short: the temporary/fleeting glimpses now are pointing to a permanent glory that is realised only in union with Christ -that’s the weight of Lewis’ glory. He was also famously known as, “the most reluctant convert in all England”. Atheist to Christ the King. 👊
Every time I doubt myself, I watch your videos and then I am excited about Photography again, keep doing this man.
Catching the moment when light reveals a scene's beauty is an amazing experience for photographers
Not going to lie Peter, this made me tear up. I think for two reasons. I'm that guy that got burnt out on the Photography love I once had and two, this is exactly how I feel about my current job (not Photography related) Your videos bring my love for Photography back to life so please keep it up! Thanks Peter!!❤
I will be honest there was a point in my life of doing photography for 10+ years now that I got into a slump and I didn't pick up my camera for months and I felt this anxiety rush over every time I looked at my camera bag. But I would remember all the cool shots I took and all the memories I had with it and one day I said screw it im gonna jump back in and I have never looked back. seeing the shots im capable of doing now is crazy from when I first started. Seeing my growth in this, is my motivation. Knowing I am getting better and producing something good is my motivation to keep going. I of course ALWAYS have fun while shooting, I will never not have fun. The moment you don't have fun in your hobby is the moment it starts to lose its spark and love for it. This is your reminder to keep going and go do the things you used to do. Trust me you won't regret it.
I am not real sure if your comment is in reply to my original post some days ago. If it was, thank you. I have scrolled all through these comments looking for someone who seems to get what I’m going through. And it seems as if you do.
My burn out came from a solid constant 22 years of photojournalism. 22 years of deadlines. It’s hard picking up this camera bag again, but I am going to try. Well unless I can talk myself into learning how to crochet. Or something. 😄 Anyways. Thank you for all you said.
@@user-bv8sy6lo8i keep truckin brother 💪💪 you’ll find the love for it again. Go on hikes with friends and bring your camera. That’s what I usually do to get the juices flowing
Thanks for this. I need to hear this message this morning. I'm a local video producer by trade, and have been careful to keep photography as a hobby and creative outlet... for me, not any client. I forgot that this morning. Another photography channel I follow recently called for people to share one of their photos that they were particularly proud of, so I sent one of mine in. If I knew he was going to select it for critique in the video he just released, I would have never shared it. He ripped it apart. I never claimed it to be any kind of masterpiece, but I loved the photo because it was very much a right place, right time moment I had the privilege to experience. He said it felt contrived. I forgot that I didn't take the shot for his or anyone else's approval in the first place. I took it because I wanted to get out and have fun, exploring the world around me through the lens of a camera just for the hell of it. No expectations. Thanks for reminding me that.
I'm sorry this had happened to you, I think of my photography like trading cards - the ones I value the most other people flat out 'don't get/understand' but they also might not understand what went in to the production of a photo that is near and dear to my heart. Keep your chin up, keep hunting for YOUR photos, and let the critics melt into the background!
Every photograph has a positive, a beauty or a lesson learned. You could tear apart the Mona Lisa or Michael Angelo's David. You have chosen to create, and without needing to see your photo, just the fact that you chose to create and share means I salute you @macgeorgeproductions The fact that the other person chose to destroy instead of uplift the positives says far more about them than it does anything you created - and now I want to see the photo! Live Creative my friend!
What was the other Chanel, so I know not to follow that guy.
Photography, along with every other creative art, is subjective. Everything that someone creates and puts forth to the world, be it music, dance, writings, paintings, drawings, sculptures, etc. people will like it and people will not like it. Do it for you. Critique yourself and strive to learn and grow as an artist. Yes, other opinions may provide insight but it’s not the end all be all.
I appreciate your reply just as much as the vid, thanks boys
Hobby is fun until it becomes a job and then it isn't much fun anymore. I felt that about my current job, but I love photography either way. Pete has been a great inspiration!
Duty can kill passion !
I had that as well. Photography eventually doesn't feel like fun anymore. It becomes a job and the hobby part fades away. I rekindle the hobby part by doing TFP shoots, no client requirements or stuff like that. Just shoot the way I want to and edit the photos the way I want to. That really helps for me. I also added videography into the mix and that also gave me the feeling I had when I started photography. Searching for lenses and lights and trying them out with different projects brings back the fun for me.
It is so nice to hear from you Pete, You have inspired a whole bunch of kids from 2019 to 2021. I used to download every tutorial video from you. Love and peace for you man
Thank you Peter, this was like a warm hug from your favourite person. Big love always
Photography NEVER dies, but creativity does. At least in some 😅
Maybe. Or perhaps it isn't given room to speak. Best wishes Broccoli.
I needed this. Especially with how things are with social media and sharing. Recently headed out for a sunset, spent a good few hours walking around taking shots listening to music and remembered why I actually started doing photography in the first place. It's always been a creative outlet, a way to chill and just be outside enjoying my surroundings and the things I see day to day. With that in mind I can't wait until I next get out to shoot again
This is so heart to heart, I almost cried. Thanks Peter! You’re the reason I started photography, I tried creating reels with photos but that was not fun and I hated it. I just got back to clicking pictures and posting them on instagram and keep them stored as memories in my album. I love that and I want to keep that.
You're so talented. You're such a good story teller. You have no clue the impact you've had on my life. Thank you
I started photography because of a video called “the Bucket shot” that was 5 years ago, I just shot my first paid gig 😂 … still feels like a hobby, I hope I can continue getting these gigs while having this feeling of been fun
You're absolutely right, Peter! The moment I pick up my camera and start shooting, I feel the fun, the excitement, the creativity, and that will never leave me. There are so many moments, memories to capture the small and the big ones. I love it!
The question is, what are we doing to keep photography alive. It’s you, mine, and many other educators and influencers’ job to protect it and inspire all until it’s the most pleasant thing in the world. And you achieved it with this video. You are an inspiration to the world ❤️
I did pro work from 1999-2023. And now ive given up. i will not stop being a photog, but im tired of chasing gigs.
Taking photos for fun is the only way. Other reasons don't matter. PS: Don't use social media to impress people with your photos. Delate social media and impress yourself.
I don’t think you have to delete social media but you shouldn’t try to impress people there. Take photos that you are proud of and like and share them if you wish. But most people think what would impress people and chase those photos which is a straight road to start hating photography.
I really needed this. Thank you so much Peter. I really needed this. I have used photography as a stress release for almost 8 years and for the last year i havent touched my camera because I have been doing so much photography i dont like doing just so I can get paid to make ends meet. I have lost alot of creativity even in my actual work projects and just in life. I have just felt drained. Thank you for this, inspiring me again.
More of these! This is your bread and butter, dude! Perfect Length, shot beautifully, great message. Keep doing it!
The greatest voiceover. There’s definitely something about the way you speak. Moves us everytime.
Fun-tography. When photography stops being fun for me, I'll take a step back. As for now, I don't forsee that in the near future. This is a great time to shoot film - so many possibilities, so many opportunities.
I've followed you for years and you always know exactly what to say to get me missing my hobby i appreciate you Peter!
Shooting the sunrise is my favourite. I can't explain. But the way I feel after it is unbelievable. Just awesome! I believe you felt that as well.
This is the reason I have been able to hang on to my love for photography… because I completely removed the pressure from it and I do it because I was blessed with the skill. I enjoy it and I love it… and I will always take pictures. It’s a part of who I am now. Thanks for the video ❤
Totally resonate with this!!! I been doing photography for over decade now and occasionally felt stagnant. But when i go out to capture cityscape of London both sunrises and sunsets, I never get tired of it. Those crazy moments chasing the lights and enjoy the serene scenery is absolutely priceless.
Great to be inspired by your content!! I love your Luma backpack too!!! ❤🔥🔥
The effect someone you’ve never met can have on you, is beyond explanation. The best few years of my life so far have been due to the inspiring videos you’ve created. I don’t think I would have gotten into the hobby of photography without seeing how much love it can bring to yourself and others around you. You’re a hero to camera owners everywhere. An honest one at that
Love it. All 100% facts. I've been involved with photo/video for approximately 20 years and I unfortunately stepped away from it all. I recently however, just got back into all of it. Started this channel for making videos and found my passion to create again. Keep making great videos and photos man. To everyone else reading this, keep going and keep creating. Don't let anything bring you down to the point where you hang it up. Keep pressing record, keep shooting those photos. Someone out there will appreciate your craft, I promise.
It's feels so strange to have found Peter's channel right at my apex for my love of photography in 2018, to turn it into a full-time job largely because of his videos and this community, to feel like we burned out on the exact same curve, and now, kind of meandering around, looking for something that resembles that original spark.
Anyways - needed this video. Incredibly relatable feelings.
The Art of Photography will Never Die.
Thanks for the video and thoughts. Resonates with me so much. Having been a working photographer for 25years+ seeing so many changes, film to digital, photographers to ‘content creators’ have certainly fallen out of love with the ‘job’
And yes, sometimes need a reminder why I started and love it so much.
🙏
Been here, been through the arc over 25 years. Hobby to pro, pushed that into a place where my creativity came to a place of contentment in my life and I didn’t have anything else to say any more. At first I thought I was burned out, and I was a bit, but eventually I came to understand it differently. Now all I photograph is my wife and friends. Simple record shots on my phone, and they are priceless and beautiful. Have fun. Peace out.
I love the messaging, to take the photo just because, and when asked "what are you going to do with the photos"...who cares...absolutely love and enjoy it
After nearly 20 years of photography, I've been down this road on multiple occasions. And then one day, I just go out to shoot whatever, you know, just to be out and about with no other agenda than to enjoy the moment. And that's when I remember why I got into photography to begin with. Fun, yes. And then I go forward again!

Thank you so much Peter for this push. You are the reason I'm doing what I'm doing. You will always be my idol, brother.❤
This inspired me in a different way than you intended. Yet, I find myself no less in tears, and no less inspired. In the last 2 years my life has been upended by a serious back injury leading to limited mobility, a wife now in fight number 2 of stage 4 cancer, losing my job and struggling to find our footing, etc. Photography as a hobby/passion has taken a back seat, hell I've even been on the edge of selling my gear at times. This video made me remember. The smell the early morning, the sounds of a place/location slowly coming to life and the energy surrounding it. It is such a unique experience at times.
Thank you so much, Peter. I've been a fan for quite a few years at this point, you never cease to amaze and inspire. Thanks for helping me remember something I love. I plan on waking up early some morning soon and getting my sunrise photo, and I'll keep it to myself. I love what you do, and keep up the good work.
3:05 😍😍😍 That's why you shoot sunrises. Daammnn. I'm not a morning person either but for my full time job I have to be. And I get the sunrise off my back deck and man, does it ever look awesome when it hits hard.
As someone who used to love photography, this hit me so effin hard in the heart. It’s felt like a chore this last few years. Thinking about what will make me money.. not what will make me happy. I need this. I have been stuck on will this be something that the public will like? Get likes on IG, but you said it perfectly. WHO CARES? My love and drive to create has turned into dread and over analyzing. Thank you.
Now THIS is the Pete I miss. This too started as a hobby for me back in the early 90’s. When it evolved into shooting concerts and weddings, it felt like a chore. A job. Definitely took the fun out of it for me to the point where I didn’t pick up a camera for a very long time. Only recently have I started to rediscover this hobby I loved so much. I needed this video. Thank you.
When photography first appeared, statements were made that ‘painting was dead’ and there would only be photography.
Well, as we know, painting lived lives. If it had not survived, many artists from Monet to Picasso and onwards would possibly have never put paint to canvas or board, and they were photographed and used photography.
When digital appeared in sufficiently high quality, some pundits said film was dead. Film did not die and is currently undergoing a huge revival.
When mobiles started to deliver high-quality images, articles appeared throughout the media saying that DSLRs (read cameras) were dead.
Cameras are not and will not die. They will evolve and are and will continue to be used to make images, even if in a more limited way.
Love this. Thanks Pete. I think a lot of us need to hear this.
I just started my CZcams journey. I've been filming and doing photography for a short while and have always been inspired by you, Peter! Thank you for this piece for real. It means the world.
I just started with photos love the calmness of a photo… so i dont think its dead. Its comming back ❤️
I'm not tearing up, you are tearing up. Thank you, Pete!
You know his heart is in this one when Peter drops the f-bomb. Kudos, I needed this one Pete!
I felt this way a while back when phones started taking good pictures. When I would mention to someone, I'm a photographer I would get the response, I'm a photographer too, then they would start showing me their pictures they took on their phone. Not saying that using a phone to take pictures is a bad thing back then or now, at least they were taking pictures. They would use the digital phone camera to take pics of anything and everything and then hope maybe a few pics will look good. As we know with a film camera you would not do this, you would have to know the triangle and wouldn't be taking a gazillion pics of everything. My grandpa was a photographer and had a black room. I learned in a black room. Phones became better and better, and no one seemed to understand me and my medium format camera and why I considered myself a photographer. No one seemed to understand the freedom of knowing the triangle and having the cameras that could adjust the settings so you could be more creative and really become a photographer. Now, applications and of course we all know AI can do this now and much more. It's getting a bit sad, but like you said you have to enjoy it. I wanted to be a photographer, but happy with my photography as a hobby.
Your video just pops out every time I feel lost in a certain point of life. Thanx for reminding me why I started to shoot photos.

I really needed this! I love photography, but since about 5 years ago I've been on hiatus cause I just didn't feel like I was improving. I can make good photos, photos I can say people can enjoy; but I felt like I never felt satisfied with them becuase I feel like I platoed in my creative journey! But I watched this last night and felt inspired to brush the dust off my camera and just shoot for the fun of it. And I did the type of shooting I first feel in love with, night photography and sunrise and I don't know, I just felt at home. Now not all of them were bangers and the few shots I did great I kind of don't want to post them. Of course I'll edit them, but this feels like this is for me. This is my moment. Thank you for reminding me; the creative arts are more than just something to improve on, their something to enjoy (even thogh it is noble to want to improve, it shouldn't be at the cost of your love for the craft) and to communicate who you are: either to other people or even yourself if you're doing a little bit of soul searching. Beautiful video, beautiful shots! Love ya Pete!
Thank god its not about AI
I had a realisation recently that photos outlive and are pieces of you. They’re your memories, your reality, your life, your perspectives, your friends and family. When you pass away they’re still around representing who you were, where you went, they tell your story when you no longer can.
Keep on capturing your story.
Your timing on these vids is always right in line with my thought process! Helps to hear another voice tell me what I need to accept. Should be a nice sunrise tomorrow!

Did I hear right?!!! Did Pete swear ?? Is that a first!! I kinda dig it….. because he sounded like he meant it with passion!!!
I didn't expect to be in tears at the end of this video, but there was no way to hold back the floodgates after watching this.
I first got into photography and video in college because it looked fun. I enjoyed messing with a camera and making dumb funny videos with my friends. I've been doing this now for some 10+ years as my job, and the last thing I want to do when I get home is touch a camera. If I'm out, I'll take a photo on my phone just for the heck of keeping a memory. My film camera sits collecting dust and my film sits around, aging. The fire that was my passion and joy had been quenched.
This video made me realize that I let life steal my joy.
I went out today to film a sunrise. Traffic got in the way and I missed the actual rising, but I didn't let that stop me, I was going to film something. I got to the spot I had picked out, set up, and filmed. And I was happy to be filming in that moment. I was capturing a beautiful scene before me with the gear that I had worked so hard to aquire over several years. My work was now serving my passion. Thank you for reminding me why I got into this in the first place.
I've missed you Pete. I used to watch you channel religiously when I was learning to edit video. I moved more into photography as it doesn't consume as much time for editing. I've just started delving into the fascinating world of macro photography and am so inspired. I love how photography encourages you to really look at the world around you. Also, first time I've ever heard you swear. LOL
And then you entitle this "Photography is Dead?" How about "Just because it's fun," or "Transcending the burnout" or literally anything better and smarter and and non-click-baity than "Photography is dead," Peter.
You still clicked the video!.......... Oh yeah, you don't have to watch his content! I know you think you are entitled and everything revolves around you, but it does't.
To make you click the video
Agreed. WTF does this video have to do with the death of photography? 4:20 that i will never get back.
What a beautiful video, man. I work as a digital designer and see so many similarities between the two crafts. "Photography is dead" - I sometimes feel the same about design. And how it transitioned for myself from being a hobby to a full time job. But I am slowly coming back to finding this old love again and to simply start creating like a kid. Thank you so much, needed this now
That video almost made my cry, it just hits! Love your work and you passion for photography! Keep it up man
I don't know if you will ever see this, but I started my job in social media a little over a year ago. I've always loved photography and I was never the best at it. But when I tell you your photography style, your passion and your in depth moments like these when you reflect have helped me in my career more than anything else. Often if I'm hitting a wall at work I will rewatch some of your videos and it will remind me to have fun with my photography and also I will turn in some of my best work. Please keep doing what you are doing. You inspire me.
He is so on point. Not only with photography people are nowadays doing it so much for other people instead of themselves. I’ve been to busy with work and other stuff and left my camera on the bench. I’ve been traveling last moth and was on a train station in Chongqing China and reflection on the floor made me realized I should pick it up again, as I enjoy looking at the world with the curious and creative eye. Whatever the equipment is. It’s not posting stuff for the likes but just the way you look to the world for yourself. Thank you Peter for this inspiring video. Hopefully it inspired more people to do stuff they enjoy than making stuff to impress others. Keep up the good work. Kind regards.
I get asked that question all the time… “What are you going to do with the pictures?” Thank you for this video!! I don’t care! I enjoy shooting. I actually enjoy editing. I enjoy being a photographer! I get so much joy out of having this hobby that I hope I never stop. That said, there are times when I wonder. I hope my grandkids and their grandkids enjoy the photo books I put together. That’s all I need. Thanks!
I studied photography back in the days. Spent almost 5 years in the darkroom and shooting. I can still bring back the smell of developer whenever I want. Then first digital cameras. Everything changed. My friends I have studied with, established their own businesses, I used to shoot portraits a lot, big prints. Nowadays I'm simply overwhelmed. Social media, thousands of cameras to choose from, millions of lenses, smartphones with 100MP cameras. Where I live there are several photographers, one or two make great photography, rest of them don't necessarily but people go to them and pay a lot of money for average photos of their family. I think social media brought people's taste down a lot, especially scrolling down on Instagram. I have burned out. I don't pursue the best camera or lens or clients anymore. Bought old Nikon D300s and and very old Nikkor 85m 1.8 D. I don't care anymore. I don't show my photos, I'm not trying to advertise or sell anything. Quality of my photos now is much lower and there are limitations but this is what I LOVE ABOUT IT. Picture straight from the camera, very little postprocessing, some cropping maybe. This photos are just mine.
I always feel hyped to do something creative after I watch your videos. I have been shooting for 25 years both film and digital. And I feel the same way as you do. You love photography and have been doing it for such a long time that it turns into a job and it is not your passion anymore but you still love it. But it is still a part of youy set up that you won't walk away from it because you still love it.
Pete, I hope you can always keep it simple and keep the fun and joy in your craft. KEEP IT SIMPLE. KEEP IT FUN- and then you are good to gp.
problem is with all the new fancy gear and editing people think photography is about capturing an instant and modifying it while editing. I hope people will realize that this is more capturing a moment, with all its good and bad side, because it is what makes a beautiful photo.
1:30 is the perfect exemple of that, u captured a blurry moment but it is what makes the photo dynamic and real. Maybe focus on the basics, the essentials of photography and disconnect from all the rest. It is what makes me feel happy now when i take some photos, beautiful in imperfections
Thanks for answering this so freaking awful questing "What to do with the photo after...". Nothing. Just enjoy. You have caputure the moment. You have experienced the sunset. You're there, and that's what's important. Much love, from Bulgaria! I love this kind of content!
Thank you, brother. Life feels like this sometimes. It's good to hear you're not alone and there is still hope
Your art is to make us resonate. And you excel in doing so. Thank you Peter & Casey, it feels great to resonate with you guys.
It's been my life the last decade. Started with making snowboarding vids is what got me into photography. That has led me down such a wild adventurous path. 10000$ of dollars spent.. I do get challenged and frustrated with feeling like "I've shot and done this before" travel is a must but FUN is the main thing to keep it... that's all it should be.
Thx dude. For no other reason than because it's fun and it's what you enjoy doing. You don't have to do anything with the photos.... they just help stamp a moment in time and create a memory. Love it. Thx for this.
I needed this video… I love photography.
I made it my mission to take my camera everywhere I went, until I started to hate it.
Because, a lot of the time, I didn’t know what to shoot. Or I didn’t like the lighting or subject or whatever.
So, thank you Peter, for this.
This Peter dude seems like a whole lot of fun to hang out with!
Recently talked to a buddy of mine and we had a conversation about professions and hobbies. He said: "You gotta find a thing that you just do for yourself!"
Thats exactly why we should take pictures just for the sake of taking them...
Wise words, I've just retired after 38 years as a pro photographer, great career - loved it .. first thing I did was build a big ass darkroom and got back to analog .. you'll probably do the same after another twenty years of shooting. For me now it's not WHAT i shoot ... it's HOW I shoot it. Personally, there were only so many sunrises etc etc that I wanted to shoot.
Thank you Peter for that. Very much needed 😊. Please keep learning and growing and sharing with us
Oh Peter, this video came at the right time. I have been shooting professionally for 16 years and haven't shot a personal frame since 2019 on a trip to Europe, but even then getting out a camera was a chore. But I ended up with four good frames to put on the wall at least. Now I almost despise the process, I work so much that I have forgotten how to make it fun again. Luckily I have a trip booked to South Italy at the end of month and I will make sure I go get that sunrise. Your video made me realise a way to snap out of it and find what I had when i picked my dad's camera in the 90s. Thank you.
