This brought back so many memories. Everything you mentioned is so true. The scariest for me were the black toenails and my first time getting nipple chaffing. It was my longest training run and my nipples were sore, rubbing against my T shirt. Eventually I saw they were bleeding and when I got home it was bad. Luckily I got advice from my fellow run club members on what to do. They told me about Vaseline and bandages.
Something that did not really apply to me was the headphones rule. Our athletics body (which governs sports including running) have rules that ban listening devices from marathons. I think it's specifically in ear headphones and overhear headphones. Rule says you get disqualified if marshals catch you using them. To get over that, some runners bring bluetooth speakers and put them in their backpacks (hiking/trail running bags).
Also I never went out too fast on my first marathon. I had a goal of sub 4 and practiced running at the correct pace. I made it at 3h59. I was so thirsty and craved salt (my body was covered in salt that I'd lost through my skin). I was so exhausted that I showered and took a nap of several hours long. Prepare to do nothing else on the day of your first marathon. No lunch with friends. No celebration afterwards. Forget about all that! You will be sore. Best thing is it gets better from then on. I since graduated to ultra marathons and the standard marathon distance is practically an easy long run.

I’ll be running London in October in my first mass participation race! 3rd marathon overall, looking for a pb BUT I’ll be wearing a costume for charity (possible World Record on the cards) - not putting any pressure on myself tho - just can’t wait for the experience!

And I just signed up for the Disney Dopey challenge in January in Florida 😬😛 it’ll be my 6th full marathon.

I'm training for my first, a nice flat one at Goodwood. I found this interesting and I expect it to be very useful. (Except the stuff about the toes, which I already found out the hard way, oh well.)

Attempted my first marathon last year. Never considered the trails we were running would be flooded. I ended up missing the cutoff time at the half way point because I didn't train for the race day trail conditions and terrain. Lesson: research the terrain before signing up and definitely take it into account for your training. Also, prepare for worst case conditions..... just in case.

Running my first Marathon in London on the 3rd of October. Started running and training in Oct 2019. Really starting to get a little nervous now. Hit 18 miles in Feb last year and now back up to 16. I’m a 17:stone 51 year old ex rugby player so not really the ideal build! But I’m working really hard now 3 runs a week and two gym sessions. Off out on Sat hope to hit 18 again. I could be an ideal guest for you to interview!

Like many commentators below I’m running my first marathon in the London Marathon in October at the relatively advanced age of 52. Didn’t help my training programme when I came off my bike in June and broke my elbow (ouch!). Really useful tips from this video - laughed out loud at the the laundry segment. I too have black toenails and sore nipples and just recovering today from my second half marathon in 8 days. Good luck to all you marathon virgins and thanks for the videos.

I just did my very first marathon (Copenhagen 2022) in 04:06:28! I was hit by COVID-19 20 days out from race day :( It really hit my mental state quite hard, but luckily I had gotten all three jabs, so I was not terribly ill, but nonetheless, I really felt an impact on my overall performance! But now I'm one marathon wiser, and next year, I will break the 4-hour barrier! Really miss these videos with Anna, Rick and Kate! Where are you, guys?? Cheers

I want to run at least one more marathon, my last one was in 2016 and every year since I have signed up for 26.2 but I end up running a half. Now I'm 62 and I still want to finish a marathon even if I have to walk or crawl across the finish line. So all I do now is Train, Train, and Train some more. And like the CZcams I just watched; I'm always hungry, tired, and washing sports clothes.

After being deferred twice, this December will be my first. The 50th running of my hometown race! I've been training since last May, been injured and recovered(ish). Totally wasn't expecting how mental all of it is. Grinding out the miles is hard enough and then when you move the goalposts back 6 months, then another 6, then a full year, it'll drive you bonkers. Club training season starts one week from tomorrow, so wish me luck!

The Mexico City Marathon last year inspired me to start running and now it's here again. My first marathon is 5 weeks away! Your channel has been guiding me from the beginning of this journey. Thanks for your smiles and knowledge.
I have two questions. Is there any precautions or anything to do for your feet if it rains?
Also I'm starting to get super anxious about getting to the starting line amongst tens of thousands of people. What if the metro is too crowded to get on or it breaks down? What if there are no taxis or Ubers or I get stuck in traffic!!

I just ran my first half marathon in July so I’m training for my marathon so I can run it early 2022! I don’t like road running as much as trail running so honestly I might do a 50k before a marathon because that’s what I did for my 25k/half. I’m running 3 times a week and lifting 3 times a week so I’m balancing speed, strength, and endurance so I hope that is doable with my schedule!

    • @Kelly_Ben
      @Kelly_Ben Před 2 lety +1

Congrats on your first half!! I did the same, skipping to trail 50ks because the thought of road marathons filled me with dread. I loved them so much I think I'll skip marathons altogether unless I find a trail one! Good luck on your upcoming races! (And it's absolutely doable on your schedule.)

I know a lot people are looking for Nessie but if they wait till mile 18 to 19 then they are on the monster, it is a 15%graded hill witch is up then flat then up then flat, it represents Nessies back it can be a game changer looking forward to it though.....love the channel

I am starting my marathon training (your plan) next week. ♥️
I’ve been told my Apple Watch won’t have the battery life to last the entire marathon… so that being said I want to do my entire training with the Watch I will use for the race day.
What would you say is the best Watch for my marathon training/ race day ?? (Dubai marathon)
I know you must get asked this lots so I’m sorry !!
