I also believe Ulrich doesn't care for solo breaks, half time boring middle parts etc. he would rather just carry the hook and counter it tastefully, especially with Cliff Burton next to him. yeah,,,he isn't Nick Menza or Buddy Rich doing blast but I for one don't want that in Metallica. For that band, Ulrich is the only drummer and he is an integral part.
Black Sabbath was similar. They did not use the drum as a timepiece. The riff carried the song and Bill Ward actually worked toward complementing the other instruments in an interpretative style. It's why Sabbath is a mess when trying to time out songs on paper.

This is Rick Allen of Def Leppards Ludwig Black Beauty snare on this song. Lars borrowed it and now this snare is owned by Jeff Rivh formely of Status Quo.
Jeff Rich is what I meant to type. from his website "Jeff plays a Ludwig Black Beauty Snare which was made in 1979. The drum was originally owned by Rick Allen from Def Leppard and was used on various Def leppard albums including Pyromania and Hysteria. The drum was also used on a Mettalica album, Master of Puppets. Jeff bought the drum off Rick whilst working with Def Leppard in 1984/5 after Rick lost an arm in a car accident. Jeff has used the drum on many Status Quo albums and concerts and says, "This drum is without doubt one of the best rock snare drums ever produced. This is masterclass drumming. Iconic, right in the definition of the term. He was 22 going 23. Don't talk shyte about Lars. Because this was not his summit. His prime came 2 years later.
Individual tracks including guitar and vocals have reverb but when mixed, everything sounds fuller and the instruments sound fairly dry, if that makes sense.
Not sure how it was recorded. I've done half of its tempo track in cubase so far, I had to adjust the tempo in like every 4th beats, even though I tried 11/16 for the pre-chorus. My tempo map looks like a terrain map lol
they weren't using a click track, Lars/James playing together to adjust the tempo and then Lars would play upon the guide guitar. like a semi-live recording. then they cut/paste the best takes.
On the first 3 albums, yeah, pretty much. But he used a well-played guitar track as a guide, demo but well-played and that's why there are slight variations on tempo, for example from 120 bpm to 124 then 122 and back to 120, that gives the track the flow, it doesn't sound mechanized but tight, you only notice the variations when you try to apply a metronome.
+Magma Mammoth the first album they used a metronome on was Justice. Thy actually would design the click track first , since they had multiple tempos in their songs, and then Lars would play along to the click and a scratch guitar rhythm and bass tracks

Why does drumming need to be complex? If it doesn't fit the song , then why? Having said that, Lars isn't a great drummer. He was good for a time. And he's done better work than on this track.
