  • Early action from TVS in the South, including a run down of Friday's action, an ad break and their late night God slot "Company". Taken from a ropey old Philips tape, so not our best quality recording.

The days when they wished us a good nights sleep at closedown and to remember to switch off our television sets....glorious.

Thanks. Always fascinated by these Company installments.

By Jove, I recognise that theme during the adverts of a Midlands Today theme during Alan Towers tenure. Mike Prince has a distinctive voice and I would remember him. At this stage, I was not yet twelve and in my first year at senior school. Because I didn't live in the South, I never saw the Company programme with Adrian and Bridget Plass. I became a Christian two years later.

When the clock appeared, and the caption read "tvs south", was this just shown in the sussex area?, and did viewers in kent see " tvs south east"

Mike Prince providing the ITV network promo from Central (using ATV graphics), with Malcolm Brown providing continuity from Southampton for TVS, though this was one occasion that he didn’t utilise a knock knock joke to remind viewers to switch the set off.

Generic ITV trail would have been supplied by Central - Mike Prince on voiceover duties

Late night god slot stuff is always interesting in how much little sense I can make of them. I get LWT's Night Thoughts because it's just proselytisation but Company is a bit more vague, seemingly dropping in on a random discussion among community centre workers and leaving it just as abruptly.

Thought it was just the BBC who closedown with the National Anthem.

Were they trying to remake it?

BBC 1 did closedown with national anthem. BBC 2 did not. Some ITV regions did close down with the anthem (Southern did, Westward, TSW, Grampian, ATV, LWT and others) and others (Thames, Central, Granada, Yorkshire) didn't. HTV Wales closed down with both the UK national anthem and the Welsh national anthem. Unsure about Channel 4. Channel 5 - nope as TV was 24 hours by then.

'Lavatory'... sounds so quaint now.. even the burglar clambering thru the window seems to be clad in a suit!
"Running a marathon is very much like being a Christian. It seems like fun when you start, but as you progress one becomes more tired and irritable. Then you realise you should have done something easier: finally you vomit and probably fall into a ditch, get mocked by passersby... then, as soon as you can, you find the nearest pub have 4 pints of Holstein Blitzkrieg Lager... Slogan: after a pint you'll want to invade Poland... and a greasy kebab'
Adrian Plass - one of those on that God botherers programme - is rather an amusing Christian author of some fame.
