    As someone who has never been on an ocean cruise I must admit that this ship is mind-boggling in its splendor. It is more a floating city than a vehicle of transport and almost impossibly luxurious. I'd call it one of the great accomplishments of the human species!

      Jesus Aranda correction: not ships...but ship. The R.M.S. Queen Mary to is the only transatlantic ocean liner in service. The rest are just white cruise ships that aren't strong enough to cross the Atlantic and are not considered ocean liners.

    If you book a veranda cabin on a transatlantic crossing, try to book a cabin or suite on the sunny side of the ship. On the Atlantic crossing, the sunny side is the starboard side when traveling eastbound New York to Southampton and the port side when heading westbound Southampton to New York.

  • @WalnutSpice
    @WalnutSpice Před 7 lety +138

    To the people complaining that this ship isn't a floating theme park, that's because it's not. This seems to aim towards people who want to travel more classy and laid back. So if you don't like it, then why come here and why pay $400+ for a ticket anyway? And if you bought a ticket without reading about it and looking at other ships, thats on you.

    • @tipsfortravellers
      @tipsfortravellers  Před 7 lety +48

      Agree, it is not designed for travellers looking for a "resort-style ship". It is a much more traditional cruise experience, harking back to the days when cruising was a glamorous affair of dressing up etc etc.

    • @NazmusLabs
      @NazmusLabs Před 6 lety +17

      Walnut Spice it's a liner. They don't understand that their theme parks can't cross the Atlantic. 😉

    • @wellasang
      @wellasang Před 5 lety +13

      Queen Mary 2 could not be made like a “theme-park” cruise ship because it is made to cross vast oceans with unpredictable weather systems. Imagine having rides on the top deck and the ship is gliding against a 60-knot winds? It is also good to have different ships offering different kind of experience!

    • @timothyharrison5338
      @timothyharrison5338 Před 5 lety +17

    Booking a transatlantic during the winter is like going to your nearest big city and booking a really nice suite at a hotel. Sure you're paying for basically the same thing you can get at home, but the point is to get away and pamper yourself for a change. Meet different people, eat different foods, just relax and let someone else make the bed for a change. You can still go sit out on the deck, just take a coat. It's all part of the adventure.

    Many thanks for sharing this lovely summary of your winter transatlantic crossing. Queen Mary 2 has strong resonance, as not only the very first transatlantic crossing, but as the means of leaving Britain for America after more than a decade there. The crossing was a lifetime dream, having spent much time reading of the great liners, building models and collecting memorabilia from the Golden Age of Transatlantic Travel on both sides of the Atlantic - a very poignant experience and lovely ship.

    We sailed on QM2 3 times and it's a great ship. The first time was around 10-years ago when the ship departed New York City from the proper mid town piers in Manhattan. It was a memorable sailing down the Hudson River past Manhattan and out to the Atlantic. I specifically booked that crossing w/the traditional New York City departure (as the 3 previous Queen liners had done since the 1930s) before the ship was sadly moved to Brooklyn and the QM2's new dock. The crossing was 6-days (compared to the speedy 5-days or less crossings on QE2) and now QM2 has been slowed down making the crossing at a very leisurely 7-8 days. I loved the fast crossings on QE2 but 7-8 days crossing the Atlantic is to much for me even on such a grand ship. I would return if Cunard/Carnival sped QM2 back to her original service speed but that is unlikely.

    Travelled on the qe2 as a ten year old....I can still remember most of my time on it with my family even though I'm 50 now,that's how fantastic a journey over the Atlantic is in such class....some ships are like floating theme parks,that's fine for those who prefer that,but for me this is the way to travel..I wish I could have afforded to travel aboard the qe2 and show my children the same before her retirement but alas it wad not to be...there is no substitute for this kind of travel...it's an experience all of its own ....the qm2 looks like it has taken the baton from the qe2 and it sure looks like it's doing a grand job....oh for a lottery win and 5 tickets to NY

    Thank You for a most enjoyable video and you have a very pleasant voice.
    This is the only way I will travel, as I don't like to be on the sea. My friend shall be on this on 3rd May bound for Southampton.
    She had invited me, and I declined...so this is the best way for me to experience it. Thanks again!

    Interesting. A beautiful ship, reminiscent of the old transatlantic liners would seem to attract the older passenger judging from this video. At 72, that suits me. Those top heavy floating apartment blocks/holiday/shopping mall things called cruise ships no doubt cater for the younger set.
    As a matter of interest, if you want to have a cigar after dinner, where do you go? On the old liners there used to be a separate smoking room. I bet there isn't one now.

      +Adrian Larkins Some have cigar lounges but (as you say) are disappearing and people have to smoke cigars in the designated area out on deck

      And if there's bad weather,no smoke. That to me is so wrong. I presume one can smoke in one's own cabin or is that a no no too?

      +Adrian Larkins no smoking allowed in cabin or on balcony..

      +Tips For Travellers Well, that's that. So control freakish. Smoking is legal but society bans it everywhere and treats those who participate as social outcasts. I am an ex-smoker but as a matter of principle, the small pleasure of an after-dinner cigar and brandy in the comfortable surroundings of a designated smoking room fitted with extractor fans, should be allowed.

      There is a smoking room for cigar smokers, it's called Churchills.

    Fantastic ship. We took one of her last Transats that departed from the proper New York City pier just like the earlier QE2, QE and QM did for decades. The crossing was a 6-day (the earlier Queen liners did it in 5-days at 28.5 knots). We felt that 6-days on the N Atlantic was a bit much (compared to our earlier speedy QE2 crossings) but the crossing is now even longer as Cunard slowed her down to save fuel and the crossing now is a relaxed 7-days (to long for me) .

    You showed the pool during a storm. About 15 years ago we were on the QE2 coming from Bermuda with a large storm that the pool was sloshing side to side, completely flooding the side areas with much water.

    Travelled November 2017 Southampton to New York. Great experience, elegant and fun. Loved the Black Tie evenings. There was only one very amateurish show in the Royal Court Theatre on my trip but I understand that was unusual. Downsides, credit card is sucked dry. They swipe your card details on embarking to your key card which is used throughout the week for all purchases, e.g. bar, dining room, Wi-Fi, gym, generous staff tips etc. Be extremely careful as you'll find yourself paying an extraordinarily large bill on departure. I froze my card Day 2 and was met with a nasty attitude from the purser. I tipped my staff directly and generously. Apart from that, I'm glad I experienced it but once was enough.
