When someone does not know how to strike or has a very low fight IQ they tend to quickly resort to tackling or taking down the opponent. Kevin Goat show the best way to defend against a takedown that is tired and tested from MMA fighters and wrestlers "the sprawl". Now it is not natural so make sure you add it into your self defense training.

As a former bouncer, street fighter and later, Black Belt, I like how you include looking around once the first threat is down. While the first dude can still get up at that point, multiple attackers is a real thing, even if it's the guys girlfriend or little sister. ( I include little sister because saw a little sister go after her brothers attacker from behind... she had a hatchet and she stopped hacking him in the back because it got stuck)

Great video. I do what the Marines call, "Bends and Thursts", which is a burpee without the pushup, to practice the sprawl. It is very similar to what is demonstrated on your video. A concept that comes to mind also is "nose to toes", if you can get a hand on the back of their head and push it toward their toes they will stop; not a perfect solution to every situation but it will work in the right circumstance. I've seen it work in, of all places, major league baseball during a brawl on the field. Probably won't work on a trained grappler but on an out-of-shape ex footballer it might come in handy. I've had a person rush me twice that I can remember; one I was able to side step, and the other I sprawled, wound up on top and laid on his head until he got tired and quit. Neither incident escalated into an all out fight and that's a good thing. Lovin' your channel and content. Subscribing now.

My Krav Maga instructors taught us sprawls and the way they made us practice them with no partners was like burpees. (Sprawl practice is pretty hard on your partner.) Basically, with no partner, sprawl like you're about to get taken down and because nothing is there to brace you, you go down as though you were going to do a push up with your forearms, which is undoubtedly how you'll land in a take down defense. From there, actually _push up_ with your forearms and hop up to your feet as though you were trying to get back up. You'll notice it's a lot like a burpee. Starting out, space your reps, try not to do this without a pad or on carpet, and sprawling won't feel so alien when you have to do it. The exercise ball is a great idea to get the reps in and really understand what it is you're trying to do, but remember, there won't be a spring assist to get you back up in an actual confrontation. Like the man said, you have to train your ass off.

I have 50% Disability rating from the VA and I'm in my 60s now so I can't do a lot of what I used to be able to do when I was younger and not disabled and it's frustrating. Most of my training is in the striking arts, but I had some training in Judo and Wrestling, but do to my age and disability I really don't want to grapple so I'm trying to find things that work for me now.

Everything here looks good and seems to me like solid teaching. But this wasn’t a tackle defense. This was a single leg/double leg takedown defense. There’s a difference. In a double or single leg they’re shooting in grabbing your leg or legs and putting their feet back under themselves. In a tackle they are charging in and once they hit whether it be your midsection or your legs they’ll be driving their feet. I could see a sprawl working on someone smaller if they’re trying to tackle you. But a bigger stronger guy? If they get their arms around you and are driving with their legs, especially if they got a running start, and you sprawl, then you’re still going down. It would be kind of like trying to sprawl on a sumo wrestler. Again this was great for single or double leg, but I am skeptical on how well it would work for a tackle.

MMA doesn't allow 12-6 elbows. If someone is going for that single leg or double leg and they they don't immeidately land it, they are definitely open to be knocked out. It's not allowed in MMA because it's too dangerous. You're not likely to see people going to the ground for those takedowns, or sprawling on concrete or asphalt. That shit hurts.
