A Tofu Competitor With One Big Flaw | Baka60 Keyboard Review

- Paramount Keeb is a new LA-based custom keyboard vendor. The Baka60 is their first mechanical keyboard in the scene, designed to compete against KBDFans' Tofu. You can buy it as a kit for $170 and it'll come with everything you need (besides switches and keycaps). You can also buy each part separately from their website. It uses standard 60% parts, so you can swap out the PCB & plate with 60% parts from other vendors...which I recommend because the PCB in the kit is not QMK/VIA compatible, and has an uncommon layout.

Very informative and at the same time interesting! Great Video man
GOOD STUFF. This guy always has what I’m looking for in a keyboard.
Pretty good deal and sounds solid. The lack of Via and QMK support is a deal breaker for me, especially since this is a 60% board.
another Jimmy upload another banger! great video as always :)
Appreciate your honesty man!
the removal of the 2 screw holes in the middle is well appreciated, the soundtest was pretty decent imo
Good vid! I really enjoyed it!
Amazing quality, attention to details, and honest opinion. I’m subscribed!
Would you recommend this kit when it's currently on sale and only costs 110 usd??
how do you remap keys on the second layer? I just put together my kit and I can't figure out how to use layers
2:10 would be related back in the day when gh60/dz60 soldering version has a reset/switch button which put the pcb on to dfu mode in QmkToolBox
Yeah, also agreed on probs you mentioned on 3:27, I've experienced some budget boards from china( idk, 25-35$, hotswap+per-key rgb/underglow), and they all support qmk(takes a bit of time to find that firmware files on qq xD) and VIA(have to use a .json file to get it recognized in VIA).
there's a sale now. Only $110 for the kit
ive wanted the tofu so bad but they are discontinued, found the case for 50$ so its worth it imo
That cut out at the bottom on the tofu and this board is for accessing the reset button on the PCB without removing the case
Ah ok, guess it's only on some PCBs since the PCB in the kit didn't have one
@@jimmynguyen973 yup, iirc a dz60 solder I had previously had it, but my dz60 hotswap didn’t so definitely varies a lot if pcb has it
@@jimmynguyen973 yeah its also for the switches at the bottom of a ducky one 2 mini to change where the Fn, alt, etc switches are I beleive
@@minecraftfish They're called dip switches
The cut-out in the bottom is likely for PCBs with DIP switches.
That makes sense, a bit dated today since everyone is putting in case foam :P
@@jimmynguyen973 Considering their software is pretty meh I honestly wouldn't blame someone for wanting to use DIP switches lol
The thin bezels are a nahh for me, still think Tofu60 looks way better to me personally.
just ordered one for 80 dollars , turned way last year bc for 170 theres tons of other options but for 80 cant go wrong
80 is deadass a killer price lmfao
@victussin especially for a cnc alu kit, despite the lack of software, tray mount, and it being daughter-boardless it's genuinely a steal for 80 dollars, if you like the layout that is
Look ma, i made it into a Jimmy Nguyen video!
Is there a baka65?
At the moment there is no Baka65
People may find the tofu boring but it's design is timeless and with it's simple construction gives it room for tons of mods. Some modded it to have a large o-ring wrap around between the plate and pcb for a more bouncy feel that even rivals the bounce of a high end custom keyboard.
Another case of Jack of (some) trades, master of none ig
@@benjaminlee2669 I know it's preference but I have heard more expensive boards that don't sound as good as a fully modded tofu. I don't really care about brass weights and different side profiles in the end of the day you only see a rectangular chunk of aluminum. The sound and feel is what matters to me. And nowadays there are after market flexcut pcb and plates you can slap on the tofu case. And some tofu cases have poron o ring mounts now. Unless you like a true gasket mount 60% . I don't see any reason buying more expensive 60% boards unless you like the brass weights and other extras. But that's just my opinion tho.
@@christiancabiles8498 at least with the configs I tried out (plateless + flex cut pcb/flex cut and polycarb plate with hg browns both with o ring standoffs) i could not get the performance to where I was satisfied with idk might just be me. Plateless with the tofu dz60 flex cut bottoms out in the case btw its wack. What config are u currently using?
@@benjaminlee2669 I got the tofu walnut poron O-ring mount case. With with the carbon fiber plate with a lot of flexcuts on it that kbdfans sell. And their soldered flexcut pcb. Used lubed and filmed oil kings on the build. I'm pretty satisfied with it. Was curious on how flexible it is compared to a traditional gasket mount that's why I bought it. The flex is close to a true gasket mount board with a large poron case foam underneath. I liked that config not to stiff and not to flexy. Haven't tried a plateless build yet but it might be too squishy haha the flexcut pcb has flexcuts surrounding the 4 holes where the pcb mounts to the case that's why I'm worried that it might flex a little to much. Sounds really good to my ears it has a rich and "creamy" sound to it with polyfill. Found a slight hollowness when the case is empty but love how deep the sound is. Still figuring out ways to tune the case to my liking but it's nearly there. All of the parts are from kbdfans. But I have found an after market flexcut pcb with hotswap sockets it has fewer flexcuts than the soldered one by kbdfans and a polycarb plate with flexcuts. Might try them on the walnut case especially the polycarb plate with flexcuts.
For me i believe the original price is not worth it for a glorified tofu but it is on sale right nownfor only 80 dollars which is probably the best price you can get for an aluminum board
to be honest, i dont think that the lack of software is really the biggest problem. for $170 you dont get the option for a soldered pcb or the options for a standard ansi or tsangan ansi. given that this board was made for entry level users, who probably dont go into the hobby getting 150$ keysets they wont even be able to support the boards layout. to me this is the most glaring problem. the tofu doesnt run into these problems, and has more colour options, a brass weight and you choice for a pcb
tldr: the layout isnt very beginner friendly in terms of compatibility and the tofu is much more premium for the price and easier for beginners to handle
Agreed, all great points.
What a name of keyboard. Does Paramount Keeb knows that meaning "BAKA" in Japanese??
i want it but just the case
Looks like a tofu mixed with alu gk61
Baka60 is currently 80$
well its gone up in price a bit it's 170 now
Ayy Bake with Sugarplums
79€ actually ^^
Sadge no rose gold
sussy baka
kinda looks like the alu gk 64 but black.
About the 10 dollar bargain…
hey guys its the stupid60! (baka means stupid in Japanese)
been waiting for someone to make this comment :P
Just no. Great review.
wdym just no?
@@immasi8922 no to the baka. doesn't bring anything new to the table and seems like a pretty sub par board for the price they're asking.
@@olivertrees What about at a discount? Rn it's going for 109 dollars.
@@immasi8922 its alright for that much. stretch your budget to a bakeneko for a far better experience overall. this is basically an aluminum gk61.
@@olivertrees The problem is, that I can't live without the arrow keys and the bakaneko doesn't have em.
