The Bakeneko60 is an open source keyboard that was originally designed by kkatano, featuring an o-ring gasket mount similar to the Singa Unikorn and OTD 356 Mini. This keyboard has a great flexy typing experience from the O-ring gasket-it's great to see this mounting style becoming more accessible.
CannonKeys took the design and made some changes: closing the bottom holes, adding cutouts to the plate, and modifying the case so that it could be made using a cast process. The case is painted instead of anodized due to to being made from a casting process, and the colors available for the first round are black, white, navy, and aqua.
This keyboard won't have the best finish for the money, but it does have a fantastic typing experience if you're looking for something with flex, and it sounds great even without foam/silicone. You could go get a cerakote finish on this board, then it becomes a great mid-tier keyboard at around $200 or less.

I've been in this hobby for 2 years and look how far we've come. I can't wait to see what new stuff will come out in the following years and see if the custom keyboard industry changes for the better.
For sure, 2 years ago we barely had any vendors. Now we have a bunch of them and it's great to see them improving the keyboard scene
I've only been in for few months but def seems like it's going Ina good direction and fact. As far as reaching more people and solid boards for solid prices. Hope they rerun the think again tho.
@@jimmynguyen973 do you know if there’s any boards at this quality and budget that comes in a 65% layout?
@@Hoghiderrr not quite budget, a bit more expensive at a higher quality, but the Phantom www.makerkeyboards.com/collections/phantom
@@jimmynguyen973 okay thanks, I just didn’t want it to be an incredibly expensive board so that’s fine (:
Awesome video Jimmy! This looks and sounds great, very cool to see more affordable options
Thanks, I like the honest review and conclusion vs other boards available. Great summary.
Clean video! Really helpful to see the quality comparison :)
Amazing content, Jimmy is such an underrated CZcamsr, he really deserves more credit.
Awesome review as always!!!
Wow great detailed stuff!
M8 u need more subs lmao, the quality is so high and info-rich. Great vid, have a nice day!
I'm really impressed with this kit - and generally delighted at how many genuinely good, affordable keebs have been popping up lately.
Same here! Love seeing all the options available
I personally think it should really come sooner. I think keyboard part manufacturers are cashing out while there is no competitor that is willing to offer good budget options.
Ex. Keycaps like DAMN DUDE they just plastic
Ooooooh this is nice! Would love to see a TKL version.
love seeing that 3Dkeebs logo on that lube. Davis is the greatest!
Oooo I had no idea this was coming out. Looks like a must have!
This keyboard looks amazing i am going to get one i have been looking long for a good 60 without rgb and i think i found it just little scared of building it myself but everything has to be first time once
i think I'm gonna pick this up to be my first custom. idc about arrow keys or rgb and i don't think the paint job would bother me. it looks absolutely perfect for me. Thanks for the awesome review!
the design is open source, so you can take the design, add your own logo or brass weight to it, then get a one off made from a chinese factory for less than 100 dollars. This allows you to get it in aluminum anodized in whichever color. For the PCB you can use a h60 pcb for around 40 dollars. Gasket is 1 dollar and bumpons are 1 dollar as well.
@@rohanmudumba2545 yes but you also get a carrying case
excited!!!
WOW! This sounds miles better than the other budget boards.
the case is 130$, a whole build is would probably get to around 200+.
@@OHOE1 I made this comment over a year ago; and at the time, this was the only board that sounded and felt good but was also a METAL case. Yeah, there were cases like the kbd67 lite, ikkk68 aurora, gmmk pro, and the tofu, but none of them met the 3 most important enthusiast principles at an affordable price. Yeah, now we got the qk65 and all. but this board is still great value for its price today. Price, quality, and value are all relative anyway. For instance, I consider $400-$500 on a DIY kit alone to be cheap (Given the quality warrants the price that is), but it may to expensive for you. But that's a whole rabbit hole of debate in itself.
I really hope this becomes available outside just the US, it's an awesome value, and it would be neat to have one with two full swappable PCBs fully built. Just lift out, unplug the daughter board, plug in a new one, and have a hot swapped PCB/plate/switches.
The same day this video came out i was gonna buy a 40% that i wasn't to happy with, but than these videos came out, and it's just perfect for me
why the hell would you buy a 40 percent
@@bloozism more comfortable too type on...

@@noahh9926 just use layers, lol. it’s not that hard to get used too, it’s also much more comfortable atleast for me, my productivity wasn’t weakened after i got used to it
if you want the same gasket fit and feel but in 65% form try Maker Phantom 65%. I will post a typing test on my channel soon. Just finished a build . its a great board.
that actually sounds reeally nice. im no longer in the market for a budget custom, but this looks like itll be a reallly compelling option.
Indeed.
this with poly fill and a cerakote would be the perfect board, this is way better than the gmmk pro
these videos keep getting better! any future streams planned?
I’ll be streaming a sunsetter build soon! I’m just gonna presolder some mil max cause streaming while mil maxing will stress me out
@@jimmynguyen973 awesome! Can relate, just did my first keyboard build stream and soldering live is pretty scary.
Hi man, great video! I recently got a Bakeneko60 and have noticed it has little to no flex, do you know why that is or if I might’ve messed up somewhere? I’m looking into 30A o-rings as well
love this board but I need the arrow keys. they say the bakeneko 65 is coming soon with white led backlighting!
For 130 you can't best it loving how you don't have to pay a ton for a good sounding and feeling boars anymore
This is a great option. Personally I think its better that the gmmk pro cause this is is actually fully custom
FINALLY A TOFU ALTERNATIVE
There's a IC for cnc'd bakaneko 60. Definitely joining when gb hits
im deciding between this and the q2 which one should i get?
you guys are really passionate about customizing keyboards ..
any difference in sound or feel between cast and cnc?
Are the Novelkey Creams compatible with the hot-swap PCB of the bakeneko? I really don't know how to solder and I want to install those switches into that bakeneko with the hot swap PCB. Can anyone help me out?
nice!
WIll there be ESD protection?
At this price point in terms of sound what board beats it in ur opinion
what keycap set is this?
Seems to be out of stock atm? Any idea when comes back in stock?
Honestly a really gud keyboard, doess any1 know when ut will be back in stock?
how’s the weight on this keyboard? i personally like heavy keyboards i dont know why lol
Any idea of what the typing angle is? interested in picking on up
Said 6 degrees on the blog post iirc
can i ask is it hotswap ?
Do you think a tofu plate would fit on the PCB and work with the Bakaneko case?
My guess would be yes because its a standard 60% layout
This sounds and looks like a great board, I might just have to cancel my preorder on the kbd67 lite. Did canonkeys give you any idea when this board might release?
within 1-2 weeks!
@@jimmynguyen973 Thanks for the quick response, definitely looking forward to picking this board up!
Does someone know when this will restock?
Which keycap is this?
If only this came in a 65% layout it'd be an instant cop fr
Seems like the plate is just kept in the case with pressure. Did it feel flimsy or pop out while moving it around?
it doesn’t
That thing might be the new budget king, imo. I’m definitely considering building this board with a pcb that has flex cuts now.
Hi anzel ^^
@@akuto2905 sup!
Ooo what PCB are you talking about?
@@jimmynguyen973 You can either do a plain60 flex, or a wt60d if you're willing to make the cutouts on the pcb!
Apiary did it for her singa unikorn, so as long as you're careful (and cut it in a ventilated area; pcb dust aint nothing to fuck with) and don't disrupt any of the traces then you're good!
@@jimmynguyen973 I'm hopefully gonna try it with this board or with a modded-to-hell tofu hahaha
what flashlight did you use in the finish comparison?
I used the Aputure MC RGBWW at I believe 5550K
Whats the keycaps
I personally love the 60% ansi layout. Configuring the right shift, fn, alt, and control as arrow keys on tap is just so much nicer than reaching over to hit dedicated arrow keys, at least for my use cases. Great review!
what key do you use to toggle on the arrow keys?
learn to use vim layout and you will never need arrow keys again. 60% is the best looking layout imo
@@sensuku Well this is super late, but you don't need to toggle anything. The VIA/QMK firmware allows you to program modifier keys (alt, ctrl, shift, etc.) so that tapping them does something different to holding them down. So e.g. on my bakeneko60, the four modifiers to the right of the spacebar are left, down, up, and right. And the left control is Esc when tapped. And they all behave as normal if you hold them down and hit some other key.
@@JBBell only a year late lol
Does this keyboard come with the case and the PCB or do you need to buy the PCB by it's self
comes with the case and PCB
Do you know anywhere i can get an O ring that's the same size as this? I wanna try this kind of mounting style, but i can't find anywhere selling an O ring that's the right size
u can buy bakeneko's gasket as an extra on cannon keys
do you think i should upgrade to a bakeneko from a tofu? is the difference really that big?
yes it is very different, or just o ring mod the tofu
Without the case and plate foam, does it give that hollow sound? you mentioned it in your video but I'm wondering how prominent that is.
You can't put case foam, but idk about plate foam. From what I hear and others hear the backspace and right shift is a bit hollow and the left side of the space bar is rattely because of the clip in.
@@barackobama6822 i prob couldve lube that left side of the spacebar more to get rid of the ping, but yes those keys can be a bit hollow sounding, but it doesn't bother me that much (but could for others). there is about 5mm of space from the bottom of the case to the top of the mounting points, so i think you can put in some thin case foam (but it’ll prob reduce flex)
Currently typing this with a tofu but I gotta say this keeb def caught my eye. Love the simplistic design but was just wondering if plate mount stabs are as bad as people say they are
these are clip-ins not plate mounted. the downside with clip-ins is that they can pop out since they're not screwed into the board, but ive never had a clip in stab pop out personally (make sure its pushed into the pcb all the way)
@@jimmynguyen973 ohh okay my bad. Thanks for the input!
There is actually a 65% of this style of board, it's called the Phantom by Makerkeyboards which has it's origins from the Bakeneko itself.
And how can you get the pcb and so on out of the case again?
you basically grab the very top row and lift the whole pcb/plate assembly up
imagine this but 65% damn it would be my dream come true
gasket mount in stock aluminum 65%
We can only dream.
there is the bakeneko65 that came out recently now
That switch plush is cool where did you get it
got it here! dont think this particular plush is on sale anymore thekey.company/collections/key-plushie-series
Should i get this or the alexa65?
Cant really compare since they’re at 2 different price tiers and different form factor, but I would go for alexa65 since it’s a 65%
Will this be a board that sells out instantly? Or will I have some time to buy?
no clue, i have no idea how much cannonkeys will have in stock. but im guessing itll sell out fast (but not sure if instantly)
Can you use screw in stabs with this board?
dont think so, the screws will push out the gasket around the backspace and i think spacebar keys.
How does this board compare to kbd67 lite?
The biggest difference between the 2 is the case: do you want a metal case, or a plastic one. Do you want a 60% or a 65% (altho there is a 65% bakeneko coming)? In terms of sound, I think KBD67 will result in a thockier sound due to the silicone.
What size shift does the bakeneko have
standard sized shifts, 2.25u left and 2.75u right
if there was a 65% or 75% version, id be sold
there is a bakeneko65 on github as well..so maybe if bakeneko60 performs well cannonkeys will consider the 65% (or someone else)
@@jimmynguyen973 great!
Is it just the Bakeneko 60 that's going to be in-stock? What about the Bakeneko 65? :(
No news about CannonKeys running the Bakeneko65 atm, but if they do I would assume it’ll be in stock as well
Can't believe it's sold out already
What keycaps are that?
NicePBT SugarPlum from CannonKeys
What keycaps are these?
PBT SugarPlum, check out CannonKeys for them (link in desc)
I've been using a kemove snowfox 61, I'm going to change this for the bakeneko hope this is a good decision.
I think it would be a great decision! It'll cost you more money because you'll need to get switches and keycaps, but the typing experience will be much better.
@@jimmynguyen973 I already bought the switches, I'm going to use milky yellows and the coral sea keycaps, or some Japanese keycaps, I'm not sure yet about the keycaps
what is filmed?
the switches
Are there any stores selling those big o-rings? Would be cool to mod some cheap boards with it

Does this have split backspace and split right shift?
You’ll have to buy an extra solderable PCB for that
@@jimmynguyen973 oh, thank you so much for reply. Seriously considering one as my first custom keeb.
Do you happen to have information on the ISO compatibility of this board?
no idea honestly...even if the solderable PCB that you can buy as an extra supports ISO, the plate does not. since it looks to be a standard 60%, you could probably use any 60% plate that supports ISO, but i haven't tried myself

What's wrong with the spacebar sound ?
I didn't put enough lube on the wires on the left side of the spacebar--I just fixed it so you can't hear the ticking anymore
OMG make TKL version of this, it's amazing!
BTW I got my gmmk pro (white ice, but as you said SILVER AF lol) and put some lubed banana split switches, lubed with Krytox 205g0. I replaced the stabs with the bushido ones from Novelkeys. I took the plate foam out, and got rid of every single screw that was in there haha . PC plate as well. I really like it and I will be using it for work since I am still a loyal tactile user (lol).
@@katarixy oo i dont think ive seen a TKL with a gummy o-ring gasket mount. and nice on the gmmk pro! glad the stabs worked, heard that aftermarket stabs won't work on some plates (but i didn't look too much into it). def a good board that can be made better with some tweaking, which is what custom keyboards are all about anyways
TKL's cannot be made with this sort of mounting system unless the case is two parts, which drives up the cost.
@@jimmynguyen973 It does seem that the main plates that have that issue are the brass and aluminum plates, with brass being the worst offender. As much as I like the GMMK Pro, I still find it a bit hard to recommend as it does need a lot of tweaking. I had my friend get it, but we are helping him mod it. Otherwise, it can be a bit intimidating. I do hope we see more companies follow through with similar offers!
@@geo7735 Thank you that's good to know!
Is there room for case foam?
yes, theres a little over 5mm of space, but case foam will prob reduce flex
Is this a 3 pin or 5 pin?

@@jimmynguyen973 THERE IS???
Not sure about comparing it to the GMMK Pro when they have the GMMK Compact which is actually a comparable form factor. Comparing it to larger boards doesn't make a lot of sense. If you're looking for a 60%, you're generally not looking at bigger boards.
