    There are many reasons why your pool pump may not be priming. This video I try to outline a troubleshooting guide to see why your pump may not be priming. There is an order that I usually go through when I troubleshoot and I try to dive into that process in this video. I dive into air leaks, O-rings, valves, union connectors, impeller issues, and much more!

    Thank you very much for this informative video. It is clear and concise and easy to understand. I am going to go through your checklist, and hopefully it will solve my priming issue.

    Dude, good looking out. My pool pump would not fully prime today after I cut it off. I tried to lube the gasket but it ended up being a clogged impeller. I would have never thought to check that.

      @@poolguyfli work for a pool company in new Jersey and we opened a pool that hasn't been open in 3 years. Drained and cleaned etc. started the spa pump, jet pump everything fired up. But the pool pump which we had to try to prime up off main drain because the owners didn't have the pool filled below skimmers. I isolated the main drain only but nomatter what i did including your tips and it just would not prime up. I'm guessing maybe installing a new pump seal but id like to hear your opinion and what you would do in this situation. The spa is separate from pool

      I don't think the pump seal has anything to do with this. If the pump seal is compromised then you see a leak around the pump. Doesn't correlate in my experience. Have you tried putting a hose in the pump to "fill up" the pump and the piping and quickly close the pump lid and turn on the pump. Sometimes that will work.

    Do you have to fill water up in the pump First time you run for the season?

      I would, it couldn't hurt.

    How often should you lube the o ring from the pump ?

    • @poolguyfl
      @poolguyfl  Před 9 měsíci

      Everytime that you open the pump lid inspect the O-ring to see if it is dry. I wouldn't say that there is a certain timeframe that it must be done. If you need to empty the pump basket, inspect the O-ring. Hope this helps.

    Thanks, appreciate this insight. My pump primes ok, but when I stop the pump the pump basin slowly drains back into the pool, so that on startup the motor works hard to re-prime. I think whoever installed the pump failed to put in a check valve, since the pump is higher than the water line. But shouldn't it hold the prime anyway regardless of the height difference?

    • @poolguyfl
      @poolguyfl  Před 8 měsíci

      @delcapslock100 Yes, the pump should hold the prime regardless of height difference. Inground pool pumps are self-priming whereas the above ground pools use gravity and have a "flooded suction". I've seen pool pumps do exactly what you are referring to and they lose their prime each time the pump turns off. I would guess that their is an airleak somewhere before the pump. If your plumbing where truly air tight it would not back siphon. As far as a check valve is concerned it's very rare to put one in front of the pump. Remember that everything you vacuum would have to go through the check valve first and debris could and would get stuck in the springs causing a different set of issues. Sorry for the delayed response but I hope that this helps.

      @@poolguyfl thanks for the info! Kind of embarrassing, but long story short it turns out the plug at the bottom of the pump wasn’t tightened down. Problem solved. 🤦

      @@delcapslock100 ah the plug. I never even covered that in this video. Thanks for pointing that out. Some pumps do have 1 or even 2 drain plugs to help empty the pump for winterizing.

      @@poolguyfl hey thanks again; I can use all the pool education I can get. Btw the other symptom I didn’t mention was continuous bubbles coming out of the jets, but none in the pump site glass once it was primed. Tightened down the plug; all bubbles gone.

      @@delcapslock100 bubbles in the return jets definitely air leak. Congratulations on getting your pool problem solved and I really appreciate you sharing your issues and how you were able to fix it.
