How lovely. My mother had one of these when I was young in England in the 1950s, and I learned to sew on it. I still recall the clatter of the treadle as she worked. Later she had an electric machine and I don't know what happened to the old Singer, but they were beautifully made and so durable, and back then every housewife where I lived had one, including my grandmother, because everyone made and mended both clothes for the family and household linens too. I'm 77 and still have some of the pillow cases I embroidered when I was married 58 years ago, as well as some tablecloths and cushion covers both my grandmother and mother embroidered. It's such a wonderful thing you did to bring back life to your family heirloom. 👍💖

I'm 66 yrs old. My grandma used a machine like this. She and grampa raised 9 children thru the depression and forward. My grandma Daisy sewed for her kids and stayed up ironing till 2 a.m. before getting up to cook breakfast for them all. By the time me and my sister arrived, she'd use her old machine only for mending. My sister, mother (her youngest) and I lived with them in the high desert of California for a while. One time, Grandma made me a slip out of a pillow case, cutting arm and neck holes, binding them with pink bias tape. It fit perfectly and was SO SOFT! The best part was it smelled like the clean linen cupboard at the end of the hall that I used to crawl in and hide. I always LOVED that smell!!! You did a beautiful restore on the old girl. Too bad she was neglected for so long!!!!!

My grandmother had a similar age Singer Machine and cabinet. If it was made of cloth she and her Singer made it… drapes, rugs, clothing for the entire family and many a doll dress for me. By the time I was 6 she decided that would be safer to teach me to sew, because I was go to sew one way or the other. While using one foot to balance on the edge of the chair, the other foot was used to pump the treadle. Grandma designed a simple dress and off I went sewing. I’m now 69 with degrees in clothing design and tailoring. That very sewing machine is my pride and joy. I keep it well maintained and in service today. She is a joy to sew with. I now own several Bernina sewing machines and they are superb machines, but Grandma’s sewing a prettier straight stitch.

My Grandmother had a treadle machine. I was fascinated by it as a child. My grandmother was known for her crochet work not her sewing but I once asked her to make me some doll clothes. She was willing to fulfill the request, but it would require my leaving "Charlina" at her house so she could fit the clothes. Distance prevented us from visiting Grandma very often. I remember the inner struggle as I tried to decide if I could live without my "baby" until our next visit. It's funny, 60+ years later I remember trying to decide if I could live without "Charlina", but I can't remember the clothes that Grandma Krezak made for her. Her machine has been beautifully cleaned and restained and now is the prized possession of my younger sister. Thanks for the opportunity to relive this experience.

It goes in the flat surface just inside the handwheel on the right, down and around the wheel underneath the top. Staple the ends together after you get it on and find the length. Put Sewing Machine Oil in every hole on top of the machine. Rotate the handwheel. And you should see her sewing! Always great to see the old gals back in business. I have a few!! ♥️🤗

My mam always said she wanted a green linen tablecloth for the dinner table at Christmas. She also loved roses. The tablecloth was something she dreamed of as she could never see herself having enough money to splurge on such a thing. One year I was working on doing a cross stitch picture for her for Christmas. Then one day I found a sale on linen tablecloths. Bought a green one and I had stencils at home. I stencilled rose bud clusters with fabric paint at each corner. In the centre I stencilled a large full bloom with tiny buds coming out from behind it. I then took into embroidering the stencilled designs. It was far from perfect but the look on mam's face when she got it was just amazing. She was almost in tears and put it on the table straight away. Then she wouldn't let anyone use the table because she just wanted to admire it!!! We almost had Christmas dinner on our knees!! Aw, thank you for the trip down memory lane. I lost mammy at the age of 67. Sudden heart attack. Otherwise seemed healthy (we found out after she had lung cancer and didn't know it. That was our consolation - that she was spared tremendous suffering). She was too young to go. That was 16 years ago and my heart still breaks daily but the memories are golden. Thanks. Now back to watch the rest of the video. I'm loving the stories and the piece.

There are sewing machinists out there who will fix the actual machine. Oil it, replace parts, etc... so it could still be used by your aunt and to teach younger people to sew with it. You did an amazing job with the cabinet. I remember being 16 and my sister-in-law making me a muslin dress with an old Singer machine like this. It was the early 70's so muslin was really in. Lol

Another Susan chiming in. I live in the Texas Panhandle just south of Amarillo. A friend of mine restores the old machines to working order in my town. I’m buying a “red eye” model 66 from him to go in a cabinet similar to yours that I’m also restoring. When you look up the serial number of your machine, the date you find is the date it was allocated. It would have actually been made up to a year or more later. The easiest and best way to clean the exterior of the machine is to use Singer machine oil and gently remove the grime to reveal the black and decals. The decals will further identify the machine. Just use cotton balls soaked with oil to gently remove the grime.
Great video. Love how you made the cabinet top yours with the dark stain and white accents. Great outcome!

There is a plate on the right hand side of the machine with the serial number on it. There are several websites and apps that can identify the age, model and where it was manufactured using the serial number. Make sure you have the right number of digits when you look at the list. They made millions and millions of sewing machines, so the numbers start out as 6 digits long but the later models have 7 digits.

My mom bought a machine like this "used" in the 1940's. I traced the model number back to 1910! I, too, finished a home-ec dress on a machine like this! (I'm 70 now!) One of the fun memories I had was that when I was really little, I would sit on the treadle and pretend the wheel was the steering wheel! LOL! I kept the machine until about 8 years ago. The veneer looked very much like yours though it still had the drawers and the metal wasn't rusted. You did a beautiful thing here and I loved hearing your family memories! Love it!
