Novel Knacks - Install Fire Blocking

  • They don't build houses like the used too. They used to burn down more often.
    In this video I add add fire blocking to my 1920's balloon framed house to bring it up to modern fire code as part of my attic remodel project.
    Skills: measuring, cutting lumber, nailing
    Tools: hammer, palm nailer, wonder bar, tape measure, pencil, combination square, chop saw
    Materials: 2x4s, 8d (8 penny) nails, paper
    Cameras: iPhone 7, GoPro Hero 7 Silver

    Not sure fire blocking installed at the very top of a house does much of anything. To stop the draft effect...would start installing in the basement and second floor first?

      It may not make a difference, but the building inspector asked for the blocking to bring the attic remodel up code.
      The openings in the basement were already filled with mortar. Since I gutted the attic to the studs and I pulled a permit, I have to bring it up to code by adding a break between the 1st and 2nd floor(attic).

      @@novelknacks4904 You have done the work required by Code at the location of the improvement. Yes the old homes with Balloon walls have fire stop problems etc. Could never understand those who say, they don’t build them like they used to....I say thank God.
