  • This week we decided to take a very short break from Tool albums and we are ready to start Lateralus next week.
Song is from 'Mer De Noms' album, released just after the Salival by Tool.
She: I really enjoyed the song and I definitely want to listen more of A Perfect Circle. Strangely, I felt this week's discussion was slightly different - as if I didn't want to interpret the lyrics too much and just enjoy the musical experience. The musical vibes 'got me' right away.
Thank you for your continuous support and engagement.

the solo is a fking orgasm that comes fully charged with emotion and when it leaves you end up empty but satisfied, my fav song from any maynard works, truly. Billy nailed every single song, bass was on point, not sure if played by paz or white, but the bass is from another world... i think drums were played by freese and let me tell you, that drum was criminal, i loved it. I think:
The Hollow is about the hollow in us, that we always try to fill, in fact, it's actually all we ever do, and it is mostly, maybe always sexual.
Magdalena is about worshipping beauty, wanting to give everything just to be close for a second, because nothing is worth more anyway. Throwing your dollars before the alter, meaning the.. ehem, female part. It's like Van Gogh cutting off his ear, or the mothers basement dwelling gamer "simping" on OnlyFans.
I always felt that TOOL and APC is about realizing that beauty is all that ever really matters. Our suffering as we reach for the divine

In my personal opinion, I've always put all 3 of Maynard's bands in their own unique category. "Tool" is a progressive journey throughout each song, with complex rhythms and deep, thought provoking lyrics that want you to push past the boundaries of our own expectations on an intellectual level. "A Perfect Circle" is a more melodic journey, with each song written like lyrical poetry that helps evoke a more emotional discovery within ourselves. "Puscifer" is a more artistic journey, with creative expressions where each song doesn't take itself so seriously, and is meant to give you more of an entertaining experience with each listen. Hence, the Male, Female, and Artistic sides of Maynard that are shown within each band. But, of course everyone may have varying opinions, this is just my personal take on each band. Also, you both have become my favorite channel to watch, and I wish I didn't have to wait a week to see each video, but it is always a welcomed surprise each Saturday. I just wanted you both to know that you do excellent work and thank you so much for putting in so much time and effort to make each video a pleasant experience. See you next week and have a great weekend!

Fun to watch you start a deeper dive into APC! Glad to hear you'll digest the whole Mer de Noms album after Lateralus.
I think Maynard expressing his more "feminine" side (which perhaps he partly meant as his more openly vulnerable and emotional side?) is more obvious on songs such as 3 Libras and Brena. Brena at the end of the album is a love letter to his fiance at the time. Brena lyrics = "vulnerable, but it's alright, I'm opening to heal".
The Hollow I think is talking about the type of person who attempts to fill a feeling of emptiness inside themselves through sex, in an unhealthy way that hurts others in the process. Yet they are always left feeling empty = hollow. Perhaps he acted this way himself at times in his life, who knows?
Lateralus next week - enjoy the ride :) Listening to that full album song-by-song is the way to go. Tool is amazing!!!

A Perfect Circle's first two albums are great start to finish. I was in my early 20s when they came out (and got to see them live in 2004 as well here in NZ), so gravitate towards those more than their later albums.
While I understand your dismay at the "short" song length, I think they are exactly as they need to be. Listening to them in the context of the full album may bring up your overall feeling towards the songs?

I had the experience of seeing APC a few days before Mer De Noms was released, opening for NIN. I absolutely hated the music. I was an avid Tool fan, and my ex wife was a huge NIN fan. I missed everything live, because I was expecting something more similar to Tool than APC was and was unjustifiably angry... I bought the album anyway, and strangely fell in love anyway. Paz' bass playing tonality is my favorite on any album. She is incredibly underrated as a bass player and musician in general. 20+ years later, this album is still gets played regularly.

    @MoBot249 Před 3 lety +1

Great video. I'm glad you liked them!
    I'm my opinion:
The Hollow is about addictive nature (I think this about most APC songs though). Sex, drugs, love... anything that, when gone, leaves you feeling hollow. "..feed me here. Fill me up, again. Temporarily pacifying." This song sets up the rest of this album so good. Even though not all of Mer de Noms is about addiction.
Magdalena is about only one of those addictive tendencies, but a lot more specific. Strip clubs or a particular stripper lady; spending money for that minor relief of lust. Not only that, (the character) is addicted to the one woman that he calls his "black Madonna" so much that her stage is his alter to Her... his "lovely goddess".

It’s interesting to hear the different interpretations. To me the song musically expressed desperation to escape a current state of mind. And lyrically it expressed someone who in my view was using sex as an escape mechanism and as a way to temporarily numb the pain of their existence. Specifically it seems as though Maynard is singing about a woman he knew/was in a relationship with who was indiscriminately using sex as an escape from their otherwise empty and depressing life.

You should really split these songs up into separate videos. More views for you

The 90s called, we want our music back. So you sit around and listen to music, and people watch you? Why? Do you know something about Maynard that the rest of us don't?

in case u do not know “and it does not really matter”.. but... most REAL Tool fans have ZERO respect for a perfect circle... because we know the truth, apc would not exist or made it as a band if Tool had not been in court.. Tool was sued by their record label and Tool counter sued.. for 8 years Tool was not allowed to make any music.. during that time maynard founded apc because Tool could not make music... Tool won the court case finally in 2017 and thats when they made fear innoculum.. apc was basically done then because Tool is maynards real band.... just a tidbit of info for u... lol

      I hope this a copypasta.

This is almost entirely false... APC was conceived in '99 by Billy Howerdel. He initially wanted another singer (Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins) but she was unavailable. MJK was brought on as the alternate option, but has been there since that beginning (APC did not do anything before adding MJK). The only 2 static members of APC are Howerdel and Keenan and they both have been present on every APC record. Apart from the earlier albums, APC went back into activity in 2017 for the album Eat the Elephant (released in 2018) and toured to support it extensively (which obviously included MJK). So MJK did not, in fact, ditch APC for Tool in 2017. When asked in June of 2018 about future work for APC, Keenan answered "Yeah, there should be". MJK seems to be able to do things for Tool and APC (as well as Puscifer) sometimes at the same time (Tool and APC even toured together with MJK performing double duties). All of this info is readily available on the wiki for APC.
As far as the court cases and Tool goes - the label's case against Tool was finished in '98 (before the forming of APC). The case that gave MJK the free time to help Howerdel with APC was due to Tool's former manager they fired. He was only away from Tool for about a year. Again, all of this is available on Tool's wiki page.
What isn't in the wiki is that Tool was sued in 2007 by a friend of Adam Jones for artwork. The insurance company that was supposedly defending Tool ended up suing Tool themselaves and Tool countersued. That is what you may have been talking about (not the label though). This certainly caused a delay in Fear Innoculum sure, but this absolutely did NOT push MJK into APC. APC was already popular by that time and had 3 well received albums by that time.
You almost seem to blame APC for stealing MJK away from Tool. Why can't you like both bands (because they are actually both pretty awesome in their own right). It's this elitist attitude that puts people off on "real fans" or worse; the bands they like. Real fans like what they like and if they don't like another band it's because they don't like the sound - not because they share the same singer that was free to do what he/she wants.
