I think the reason bands like Brass Against can exist as cover bands is how different the cover is from the original and the fact they say it's a cover.
Just like any musician who puts out a cover of a song in their albums, for example John Mayer's "Bold as Love" Hendrix cover in Continuum
This band is epic in there own right. Lots of intense song covers and such in a symphony type setup.

in the uk, a DJ or live band, cover band or otherwise has to (if the venue is working properly) provide a list of tracks to the venue, who pay PPL / PRS who then pay the artists a royalty. This applys to radio,m pubs etc too. Thats why a pub will tend to have a jukebox and this will all happen automaticly though that. I assume it is a similar system in the US

I can confirm cover band concerts can be pretty amazing. I went to a Beatles one in one of the oldest churches in California and also went to a Led Zeppelin one at some giant grass park not far from the water that was just amazing and had a whole orchestra and the lead singer not only sounded like Robert Plant but looked like him too.

You have to apply for a mechanical or "Compulsory" license. And every time your version of the cover song is played you or your label pay the royalty cost to the original which is currently less than $0.10 in the US

When you’re in front of thousands of people, you tend to go along with things even if you don’t actually want them. It happens all the time with the genders reversed and a woman pretending she was okay with it. There’s a lot of pressure.
I was at that show. Walked away to catch another band just before she did that. She had said she wanted to do it and asked for a volunteer, got several.

DJ's need to buy special formats of songs without DRM (Digital Rights Management) restrictions from platforms like Beatport. They are usually more expensive than a regular song used for casual listening (over a dollar each), but it's also higher quality (FLAC) be used on large sound systems without distortion.
It's basically an individual license tied to the music file that limits the usage to licenses software. If you buy a song on iTunes (Apple Music) it won't let you play it or edit it in most DJ software (Traktor, Serato, Rekordbox) because it has this restriction applied. You can use software to forcefully strip the file of the DRM but that takes time and is a form of piracy.
If you're at a big enough venue and you use an unauthorized song or stolen music and you get caught, the original artist can definitely sue. It's hard to prove now but the technology does prevent it to a large extent.

I was here for this Schulzy. I now refer to her as Sophia Urethra. Some context, she announced she was going to do it about halfway through the set and that guy had a bottle taped to his forehead so she called him out. She kept her word, this was the last song of the set and she brought him up. I saw a few people walk away that didn't want to see it. The rest of the crowd seemed weirded out yet entertained/laughing at the same time. Leave it up to the internet to make a bigger deal about it though. Other than that the band is actually pretty talented so check em out yall lol
