  • Special Forces was established as a basic branch of the U.S. Army in 1987. The branch's lineage, however, can be traced to June of 1952, when the 10th Special Forces Group - Airborne was activated.
The U.S. Army Band "Country Roads" pays tribute to the Green Berets with this performance of "Ballad of the Green Berets," originally written and performed by Green Beret Staff Sgt. Barry Sadler.

I'm a german, and I'm sad, that such a song could never be sung in Germany for one of our military units. We've lost the pride for our soldiers. It's a shame! This song is wonderful and represents the ghost of an elite-unit. Sorry, if my american isn't correct, but I didn't speak or write English/american for a long time.

When this song came out during the Vietnam War, I had 2 Army brothers and I Marine brother in Vietnam at the time and all 3 came home safe. From the first time I heard this song, the tear flowed. And still today I can't hear it without tears on the 3rd course. Thank you for sharing. 💖 Just a little Military family I belong to. 5 Brother 4 Army, 1 Marine. 1 served in Korean War, 1 served in Germany during the Vietnam War, while the 3 youngest did in Vietnam. My Husband is an Army Vet. Our son severed in the Army during Iraqi Freedom, and now we have two Grandsons severing 1 an Army Medic, the other a Marine, in engineering. I so PROUD OF ALL OUR AMERICAN MEN AND WOMEN. 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖

Our family has a long line of military service. My father-in-law retired from the Navy. He was stationed on an air craft carrier supporting troups in Vietnam. My dad was a medic in the Army during WWII. My husband retired from the Army, and he a disabled veteran. I spent the final 16 years married to him. We are still married and just celebrated our 49 anniversay. My son, also a disabled veteran, was in the Army and did two tours, about 30 months, in Iraq. My son-in-law, also a disabled veteran, did a tour in Iraq where he suffered TBIs and ended up with PTS. His vehicle was hit by mortors twice and hit two IEDs in his vehicle. Now, one of my granddaughters want to go into the Army. One is already on deferred entrance. She's passed all her exams and will go in when she has her children situated.

He fought in the Vietnam war and was well decorated for his actions there. But I know that I received some good training even short it was. The army has some good units in it. Some men are trained well and some aren't. One of the reasons I respect the Marines is because they are all trained well.

A lot of our SF Troopers died in Vietnam. Then again there were an estimated 58,225 that were killed, another 304,000 that were wounded, and 2,413 that are considered Missing in Action. I don’t know for an absolute fact, but I’m fairly certain that every single one of them meant and still means a lot to them as well. My Uncle was an Army Captain (Huey Pilot) that was listed as MIA because they couldn’t recovery his remains. His status was finally changed to KIA. My first government job was at a Marine Base in California. I had the privilege of seeing them at their best, and when they received their orders to go to war. None of them wanted to face what their dad's, granddad's, brother's, sister's, aunts, and uncles faced. Some did not come back some mangled and disabled. They shared their fears, but they knew they had a job to do, and they did it. This song always makes me cry because, as a civilian, I didn't have to Even think about going over to a war zone. So I remember all those men and women. They all have a very special place in my heart.❤ Later, in my government career, I worked at the VA Hospital. There I saw the men & and women who came back. And saw how they came back. All proud of their time in the service. How can anyone see these wonderful people and not cry about what they all went through?

The very best I've heard sung. The beautiful lady has a wonderful voice.
Posted by 14 year old student whose cousin was a marine and lost his life 5+ years ago, and I cried then and listening to this rendition, brought tears to my eyes. Had my cousin been alive today, he would still be a green beret and a high-ranking officer.

Thanks you for this beautiful rendition of such a warm song. My dad, God rest his soul was, one of those brave few to wear the green beret. He served in Vietnam and died in Jan 2021. This song brought a tear to my eye hearing you sing such a good song. And thank you for your service too.

My father was also a Green Beret in Vietnam and just died 2 months ago. He always loved this song and it obviously reminds me of him.

Seems like every time I turn around I’m hearing about another Brother that has passed away. Recently Maj Gen Mennes announced that Smoke Bomb Hill barracks are going to be / or are being torn down and new barracks built. Good to see that our Troops are being taken care of. I still remember the Old WWII Barracks that we lived in. (And guys Rappelling down the Fire Escapes at the end of the barracks). I was forced into a Medical retirement in 1989 with 22 years. Miss it every single day!

Fabulous! First time I've heard an Army woman singing The Ballad of the Green Berets. Great job to the singer and to your band! This is Women's History Month, so it is just right on the mark for me to hear your wonderful band, and the West Point Choir and Orchestra perform the beautiful hymn from the movie, We Were Soldiers, Once and Young. I was a teen with a brother in Vietnam when I heard this. Two years later I was in Vietnam with the 75th Ranger Regiment as a LRRP. The inspiration just stayed with me…. Now at 74 I still feel it.

Beautifully done. As an Army vet of Vietnam listening to this rendition made me weep. I was stationed at Ft.Bragg after Vietnam & saw a lot of Green Berets training. Americas Best.
