      I usually go to Honda to get something diagnosed then buy an aftermarket replacement and get a mom/pop garage to install it for cheaper lol

    • @angelisem6108
      @angelisem6108 Před 6 lety +1

      @tylerthegeek28 will Honda do an AC diagnostic for free, and find the actual problem? Without any agreement to fix it with them? I’ve been searching online for my issue, and can’t seem to find the exact same problem..plus my mechanic took that probe tool and checked my relays with nothing showing wrong.

    • @TylertheGeek28
      @TylertheGeek28 Před 6 lety +2

      Most likely not, pretty much once they pop the hood you'll be paying. It would probably be around $100 for them to do a diagnostic but there is no guarantee they will find anything within 30-60 minutes they have the car then they'll start charging you more for taking things apart or off the car etc. Honda wanted almost $800 in labor to replace my AC compressor it would have costed almost $1700 using "genuine" Honda parts. I bought parts from NAPA and had them installed for $400 cheaper then the dealer

    Update on snap rings. Completed this replacement on my 03 accord. Everything was the same except for the clutch plate design. I purchased a set of Craftsman 2" pliers 9-47412. Unbolt the compressor to reach the ring notch which was at 2 o'clock position. I was able to get the grounding bolt out and replaced with a std bolt 5mm x 8mm. AC's back in business. Thanks guys for a great video instruction

    Yay.. my car's A/C is fixed :-) Eric from South Main Auto walked me through my exact problem. My A/C would run for about 10 minutes and quit.. then blow warm air. I took my car to a local shop and they recharged the system ($40)... issue remained. Then they replaced the condenser (which looked like Swiss cheese $400)... issue remained... GRRRRrrrrr. So I turned to youtube and I fixed the A/C clutch ($0) and the issue is FIXED! Thanks for being my virtual mentor Eric :-)

    Thank You! Excellent information and video; Very Helpful in guiding me in replacing the A/C clutch on my '06 Civic. I learned a lot from reader comments and wanted to contribute in an effort to assist others.
    - Straight forward repair (with the help of this video). However re-installing the inner larger snap ring which secures the electromagnetic coil to the compressor nearly did me in! Not too hard to remove it but Very Difficult to re-install. I found reusing the original Honda snap ring was helpful. It was easier to work with than the ring that came in my clutch kit. It has smaller holes for the tool to fit into, has a slightly larger gap, and wasn't as prone to twisting when fully expanded. The snap ring tool that worked for me (although not a quality tool) is the straight-external tool from this kit - TEKTON 3576 Internal / External Snap Ring Pliers Set, 4-Piece. To work for this repair the tool needs to have long needle-nose like ends, which give you some working room between the coil and compressor shaft.
    - Snap ring tools I tried that did NOT work for me in this tight space are: GearWrench 82033 Double X External Snap Ring Pliers and Channellock 927 8-Inch Retaining Ring Plier.
    - On the '06 Civic if you also change the serpentine belt please note Honda Service Bulletin 06-059. Your replacement belt will be longer than the original and needs to be routed differently.
    - In my case the A/C compressor had to be unbolted from the engine to allow enough space to remove the clutch (it hits the frame otherwise). There are 4 bolts holding the compressor to the motor; the two on the bottom are easy to spot and the two on the top can be found next to the inlet and outlet compressor hoses. All 4 bolts are long and come in from the front.
    - The philips head screw holding the coil grounding wire is an M4 and 8 - 10 mm in length.
    - I was surprised to learn that the cost of a replacement compressor with clutch was roughly $300 (US). I was so-stuck on the inner snap ring that I considered replacing the whole unit and paying for a system vacuum/recharge ($135 US).
    Hope this information is helpful!

Someone told me I will have to release all pressure and Freon before I remove anything from the compressor. My issue is i am having weird noise from the belt area and when i removed the serpentine belt the only pulley that made a grinding noise was from the a/c pulley. Could that be it or maybe I need to change the tensionor. any help will be awesome. i found that the compressor bolts are a lot easier to get to if you pull the fan. Two bolts at the top, wire harness disconnect and the fan will lift out. It's a little tricky to snake out, so be careful not to damage the radiator while you pull the fan. Once the fan is out, it is much easier to get to the bolts.. from the top.

    Hopefully your repair goes easier then mine did. The front snap ring was a*itch to get to, had to borrow a set of snap ring pliers from a friend. Finally got it out and then focused on getting the pulley off, it took alot of beating and banging and a few choice words, spent almost a full day on getting it off. Came real close to pulling the whole damn thing off so I could work on it. Hub pullers unless it is a very small/narrrow one won't fit in the confined space.
    The snap ring on the outer side has a very small diameter hole. The inner has a larger hole. I had to use two different pliers to access each one. Good luck if you choose to start this repair,

    Funny thing about these honda AC systems is that it's rarely a major component. Save time and look in the fuse box first and identify the MG Clutch Fuse ( Magnetic Clutch - AC Compressors on Cars are electromagnetic. ) See if it's blown first. Then identify where the AC Compressor Relay is. On the back of the fuse cover it's the one with a snowflake. But, before you purchase that $7.00 ( Seven Dollar ) relay make sure the AC system condenser fan is running right behind the radiator. If they're working buy a new relay. A lot of the relays today are solid state SSR ( look it up - a led's light shines on a light sensitive diode so that a small current controls a larger current just like an electro-mechanical relay ) heat will eventually kill them.

    Hi Random repair,
    your video is so very helpful. My 2008 civic ac is acting up as well. Ac compressor is ok when is engine cold. However, ac clutch doesn't engage after sitting in traffic and/or outside temperature is higher than 75F.
    Did a tap on the clutch while engine running and it start engaging again but still will have the same issue after a while.
    Relay checked out ok. Refrigerant just got recharged. Fans are working when ac button is on.
    I will check the gap over the weekend.
    Poorman's idea was to check and adjust shim or do i suspect ac clutch is the culprit or is it something else....

    Just an additional suggestion. It is not necessary IN ALL CASES to change the coil. If the coil gets power and gets magnetized it could be that the clutch worn out itself (much less cost AND LABOR to change it

    Thanks for the help. I just completed replacing my clutch. Here are a couple of suggestions. The type of snap ring pliers you require look like this.
    www.amazon.ca/OTC-4870-Master-Cylinder-Snap-Ring/dp/B00R7OS1E4/ref=sr_1_31?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1530929949&sr=1-31
    One other HUGE trick. Getting the clutch pulley off is impossible without moving the compressor..or..
    We used a scissor jack and simply pushed the engine sideways on the rubber engine mounts. We were able to move it about 3/8 of an inch which was just enough to remove the clutch pulley. Saved a ton of time removing the compressor (which entails moving the alternator).

    @anyone with info, my issue is, long story short, had no AC because I had no condenser, finally got it installed, got the correct pag oil in, was only able to fill the Freon with 1-12oz can because the compressor turns right back off, it does NOT quickly cycle on and off as the popular issue found online, it turns on and blows cold for about 5 seconds and shuts off, it does not kick back on for quite a while, when it’s on everything seems to work properly.
    Long story long, I crashed smashing my front end, luckily not so bad that it totaled the engine, only the radiator was replaced(engine wise) to get back on the road, however once summer came about (I’m in Phoenix, and been dying for months) realized I had no AC. Found someone with a friend willing to check my hoses, the response from that seemed the hoses were good we believed, but there was no condenser!! My mechanic that replaced my radiator didn’t tell me this, but once I found out knew I had to get one. Ordered one, watched videos how to install/see what all I needed, and got everything I needed. Finally was able to get the condenser installed, and only able to fill 1-12oz can of refrigerant because the compressor shut off quickly after turning on, and wouldn’t come back on. Relays and fuses were checked, nothing bad found, the only thing I know that I don’t have on there is the condenser sensor, so with all that info, is there anyone that can lead me in the right direction to get my AC staying on?! I appreciate the help!

    2011 Honda fit- Ac compressor clutch will not engage. Applied 12 v at relay socket, this will engage the clutch manually. Bench tested relay, applied 12 v and got continuity across the load side. Tested relay socket with multimeter, on load side, 12v available , other pin has continuity to compressor. On trigger side, constant 12v source ( reversed polarity -12v for some reason) whether or not AC switch is on. Tested pressure sensor on Low side of compressor line with multimeter, continuity checked. Tested temperature protection switch at compressor, continuity checked. Tried disconnecting battery on the car for ECU reset, tested all fuses I could think of, FAN, SUB FAN, MG CLUTCH, AC. There are several relays in the actual fuse box which have no labels, unable to test those because I don't know what they do, auxiliary relay box in engine bay contains 3 relays, fan x2 and AC Clutch, applied 12 v all click when voltage is applied.
    Totally lost on what to do next, resistance across the clutch coil is 3 ohms and it works when 12v is directly applied either by battery to clutch or jumping the relay socket.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

      As an aside, I inquired at a Pep Boys about replacing the compressor belt pulley bearing. I was told the unit was not replaceable and that the compressor was shot. Not true. Then he wrote up an estimate that included the compressor and drier/receiver, which came to $1200! I threw in a new (Chinese) compressor for about $200, and at least the pulley bearing is now replaced. Next I need to try and recharge the system and see if it holds. No wonder auto mechanics ranks as one of the top areas for consumer complaints - you can't trust what you are being told.

  • @johnjoseph7382
    @johnjoseph7382 Před 8 lety

    It's likely if you would have checked the clutch gap on the original clutch you would have seen it became too wide so you would have just needed to remove the shim. That would have been all you needed to do. You could have tried to hit the clutch hard with something with the ac on to confirm. It likely would have turned on, which would have been further confirmation. You can get a spanner wrench to hold the pulley to remove the pulley bolt so you can then torque it to spec if there are holes in the clutch for the spanner wrench to go into.
    Since the fans were running that should be further confirmation the system itself is working properly enough to show the issue is the clutch. If the fans weren't turning on then it would be something else.

    I installed the new coil with the back facing tit aligned with the hole on the plate that it sits flush against, but with the c-clip installed the coil is not held firmly in place by the c-clip. The coil will start to partially rotate when I turn the A/C on and the coil is energized. This will not work like this, I need to figure out how to have the coil firmly fixed in place. The c-clip is correctly installed and sitting in the groove all the around the compressor shaft. There is space between the c-clip and the front face of the coil. Does the coil have to be pressed in? Do I need to use an epoxy to hold the coil in place? Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks and great video guy's!

    Thanks for your video. I have the same problem with the AC clutch with my Civic 2007. I don't know if it's the clutch or low refrigerant. I hope to jump the compressor clutch. At around 4:51, the video just briefly mentioned that the clutch didn't turn on even after being powered. It's not very clear to me how to do the powering exactly? Could you please point out again which wires I should tap in order to jump the clutch? Thank you very much.

      There is a switch on the line behind the headlight. you can jump that and if its undercharged the ac will turn on. You can also connect a gauge. If fans are running but AC clutch isnt its probably the clutch.

  • @elmecanico4943

  • @michaelgulak5625
    @michaelgulak5625 Před 7 lety

    Don't jump the wrong wires on that switch on the AC line, which has 3 wires instead of 2. I did, and the car shut off immediately and is now throwing a P0113 and a P2649 (IAT High input and rocker arm control circuit high). I'm thinking I cooked something in the harness or ECU.

    • @michaelgulak5625
      @michaelgulak5625 Před 7 lety

      And if this happens to anyone else, it seemingly went away after the car being off for an hour or so. Hopefully it doesn't come back. Was getting ready to start tracing wires.
      Also, it seems that my coil is fine but my compressor clutch is very corroded. Working the arms on the clutch a bit seems to have freed them up. I've read that for others who just had a rusty clutch, if you spray it with penetrating lubricant, it will resume working. That's assuming your coil's not bad.

      Nick Miller it's probably low on refrigerant, compressor won't kick on if it's low, otherwise it could damage the compressor. pressure on low and high side should be equal when ac not running (pressure equalize).

    • @drodriguez1724
      @drodriguez1724 Před 7 lety

      Nick Miller if it has 3 pins it's a sensor not a switch. It's a thermistor. Takes pressure inside the system and translates it into a voltage that it sends to PCM. take it to shop and get it recharged and checked for leaks.

    Hi-inspired by your video I obtained a clutch rebuild kit and decided to repair my ac myself. Unfortunately, even though I did everything EXACTLY as you did, I can't get the new Clutch Pulley back onto the compressor bearing. The fit is just too tight. I was working on my '07 EX for 8 hours straight today, and two of those 8 hours was spent unsucessfully putting the new pulley on the compressor. I even tried putting the old clutch pulley back on (compressor has been completely unbolted from the motor, just like you did), and still: nothing.

      First check you're fuses. Pop open the hood, open black fuse box and check fuses. If fuses are fine. See if you can send 12 volts to the AC coil. Unplug power wire to coil, use a long wire with clips on each end. Put one end to battery plus, other end to the coil, if clutch does not engaged, then you have a faulty coil.

    How can you tell if there is already plenty of refrigerant in it without having to add refrigerant? Can I just buy some and start adding it? In fact, is that the first thing I should do because I read somewhere that the clutch might not be engaging if there's not enough freon/refrigerant/R134A in it. Is this true? And if so, should I first just try to add refrigerant before doing any other diagnostics? In other words, if the air is blowing warm is it more likely that the clutch is not engaging or that there not enough refrigerant in it? Because I would think that if there was some refrigerant in it it would still blow a little bit cool, just based on logic. I'm inquiring for a 2006 Civic.

    So a year ago I bought all the components need to replace the A/C compressor and associated components on my 2006 Honda Civic. Needless to say I was highly pleased when the A/C worked upon initial startup. Great! Well this lasted for a couple of weeks or so then no longer worked. I chalked it up to a failed amateur effort to refit, vacuum and fill my A/C. Some months later I decided to revisit the issue (hot weather and a hot car motivates you) and ran across an article that said give the A/C compressor switch a moderate whack with a screwdriver handle etc. and if the compressor kicks on then bingo their is your failed component. A/C still going strong a month or so later. If only everything could be so simple to resolve. :)

My a/c works fine(car has freon, no leaks) when just starting out cold engine, lower ambient air temps, but as the ambient temperature starts getting into the 90's I have pulled over and visually seen the compressor clutch not engaged, but both fans are still spining. I have ruled out the compressor temp sensor, by shorting two of those three wires on the connector on the alt. Thinking I have a break in the coil, will confirm with ohm reading.

    First look at the compressor if it turning and fan is turning It could be the compressor relay fuse, so replace it.

      +Sensei Mind You are so right , brother, that is usually all it is!!! That relay, #12 in fusebox, in engine department, cost $5.99 in Advange Auto Parts, so do that first, done it, bad reley, by the way: Made in USA ;o)

      We dont ever replace anything without testing first... Thats usually a waste of money. A relay is very easy to test :)

    Awesome video dude! But how did u take out the snap ring that is on the coil? I am having an awfully hard time removing that snap ring. The snap ring for the pully took me literally 2 min.
    Thanks for the help!

    Just to add to the knowledge base I have two of these cars and both of them had failed A/C clutch relays. Easy fix.
