If you've ever been watching Star Wars and thought a scene looked like something else you'd seen before, you're not alone. New Star Wars media has been in the habit of reusing concepts from elsewhere in the franchise ever since the Disney buyout, and it's becoming more noticeable as time goes on. Obi-Wan Kenobi did this in multiple episodes and is probably the worst offender, but with the Ahsoka series coming this year it's possible there could be a new challenger approaching.

I like to see vader's helmet being cut as a form of poetry. Ahsoka could get it half off and so could Kenobi but the only person who could fully remove it and bring Anakin back was Luke.

The key is they're supposed to rhyme, not be exactly the same.
ep6 had Emperor taunting Luke with the death of his friends, and Vader making a pivotal choice saving someone/killing another.
ep3 had Anakin making a pivotal choice the opposite of what ep6 had.
ep8 had Snoke taunt Rey with the death of the Resistance, and Kylo kill Snoke like Vader killed Emperor, ep9 had the Emperor ep6 again.

    Hello There!
Edit: Completely agree with your assessment about reused content. I’d rather see original ideas made by people with passion.

GL's rhymes were good, they called back like certain motifs do in the music. To the point where you can recognize the call back, but that its in a different context or presentation. These go too far and like you said, and they obviously only do it because they only appreciate the live action

I think it's just that Lucasfilms and Disney don't respect the creators of things like Rebels and Fallen Order and think the best moments from both are freebies for the, relatively mediocre, live action moments.

I am a hardcore star wars, I do agree with SW recently having a lot of unoriginal moments, im not denying that, all the point you brought up were true. however I will defend the Vader, Ashoka & Obi-Wan scenes. To me it follows the traditional 3 act structure, normally seen in movies. for example aside from a movie as a whole following a 3 act structure, id say this falls into a set up, reminder & payoff 3 act structure. Obi-wan was able to reveal a 1 half of anakin by cracking the left side of Vaders helmet (the set up), Ashoka was able to reveal the other half by cracking the right side of his helmet (the reminder), neither of them were able to truly bring Anakin back, only a small part of him & finally Luke, Anakins son was the only one to actually fully remove Vaders helmet, bringing Anakin back (the payoff). granted this only works if you watch in chronological order, which tbh, i think is the intention now as there is too much content all over the timeline now, to watch in release order. just my view. love the video by the way!

the scenes at the end of return of the jedi and rise of skywalker also get repeated in last jedi with snoke trying to tempt rey while a losing battle happens outside after she willingly handed herself in, then 'redeeming' or getting help from the dark side apprentice

Don´t forget the expanded universe that disney deleted just to take scene, ideas and anything they want from it and regurgitate it.

I found this today. I am having a hard time with the JFI/JS games because, to me, it's effectively "Force Unleashed" and " Jedi Knight 2" but more modern... and, I honestly want the main continuity and game continuity completely stripped from one another. Not exactly "Luke/Leiah/Han/Vader/Obi Wan/Palpatine" never existed, but perhaps you don't know if you will be "the Luke" of that game's universe. It's what I love about KOTOR and hate about SWTOR at the same time. SWTOR are people who just want MMO Kotor, nothing wrong, but due to when these games happen, it invalidates virtually every choice except what EA decides are the canon ones. Additionally, now, you have a timeline piece no one has explored since Didney took over the franchise, but it just makes me go "okay, but what if we start setting these games after movie 6?" Or split the games from the movies entirely. Yeah it's cool you can have Vader when merged and in that era, but I mean, Darth Malak was a Vader-like and made for such a good KOTOR character that they ripped him off with Darth Malgus. So you can easily slip in during the between times and have good and believable characters that are fun to have met, see: Trilla. They do a thing and they do it well and the story is better for it, but like, relying too much on movie/live-action recognition to a rip-off and everything is so much worse for it and I just want it to stop.

  • @Relisysification

The sequels, yeah 100% Abrams writes things backwards to have cool moments, and fills in the gaps from there.
I think the Kenobi show similarities show consistency in character and in setting.
The Obi wan Vs Asoka fight scenes have the same resonant core, neither could believe that Anakin was gone and Vader took his place.
They also needed to justify Ben Kenobi saying "[Vader] betrayed and murdered [Anakin]", how he got to that explanation. Where as Asoka needed to know what happened to Anakin in O66 as she was mourning his death.
But can we all agree, that Andor slaps, and is one of the best pieces of recent media and makes the galaxy feel more interesting

Similar situation happened in book of Boba fett with Cad Bane "schock" appearance and standoff with Cobb Vanth.
Cool scene, but we've already seen Cad Bane return and standoff with Hunter in bad batch a year earlier.

I think this problem really blew up for me when I saw the mandalorian episode where they fight the krayt dragon, which had a plot they pretty much entirely ripped from the tatooine section from KoToR1. Glad someone else has noticed, I thought it was just me

I’m glad someone has spoken about this! Disney need to actually do something to make original content or take a risk and create a whole new story set in Star Wars completely unrelated to the Skywalker, in my opinion at least

I usually don't mind the retelling of video game stories to a movie/tv show adaptation when the initial goal is to broaden the audience and they don't try and hide it. A good example is something like "The Last Of Us Part 1" having a tv show adaptation which is almost a one-for-one with the story the video game presents with the goal to introduce more people into said story. There's plenty of behind the scenes footage where they talk about how they wanted to bring the story from "The Last Of Us" to a broader audience for people to enjoy and, in my opinion, that is completely fine.
I find that with Star Wars, instead of acknowledging that they're trying to spread the same stories to different medias for people to enjoy, they're trying to retell it as a completely new story while trying to give an homage to the old stuff to hype up fans. Disney/Lucasfilms also went out their way to decanonize almost all C-Canon and cut down a majority of potential for their extended universe (for those who don't know the C-Canon is essentially alternative media or extended media which includes things like books, comics, tv shows, video games, etc. that has the same canonical impact as any official content. I am going to quickly add that it was never canonized in the first place, however, it was in this sort of limbo where the media was available for use). They also haven't really bothered making any official series revolving around Legends either. Hell, even if they wanted to milk the shit out of the characters from the original and prequel trilogy, they still have the ability to further flesh out the backstories (even Anakin's despite The Clone Wars doing a fantastic job with that already) and still come up with original content. I'm sort of at the point where you could probably hire a bunch of people who dedicate their life to writing Star Wars fanfiction to make a better Star Wars experience than what Disney is doing right now.
Anyways, sorry for the rant. I'm just extremely passionate about art that seeing something I love release disappointment after disappointment just makes my blood boil.

I thought the same thing when i watched Obi-Wan - “those hack writers played Jedi: Fallen Order, too.” The bigger picture though, is that Disney and Lucasfilm really have balls to delete the Expanded Universe - and then mine it for content. Like whipped step-children, people were “excited” to see Thrawn in Rebels. Barf. I swear i’m in The Matrix or something. You can’t make this shit up.

  • @kinkaaan4795
    @kinkaaan4795 Před rokem +3

Think of it this way, most fans don't consume all Star Wars media, some saw Obi Wan whilst others saw Rebels. Making a similiar scene in both forms makes it so that people viewing the movies(arguably the essence of Star Wars) have the preconception that Vader had not managed to fully "destroy" Anakin Skywalker, and thus making Anakins redemption more powerful. Further I think it adds a sense of continuity in that what makes Darth Vader different from Anakin Skywalker, is his suit(pain, suffering, anger) and that a tiny glimps of the outside world, his old friend, and his master brings the light from within(Anakin) to the surface.
Also, I agree that Disney could do a fair share more trying to make the story beats more original. but there is also a risk in doing so, because there is a chance the fans won't like it, why change a winning concept?

Even the sequel trilogy has plagiarism. Forget which movie/movies but one or all are based off a fan fiction.

The thing that always strikes me with the latest sequel trilogy is how closely it follows the original trilogy in terms of the main plot points of the original movie trilogy. So in a new hope we blow up a death star...ahem i mean a first order base. Then in the second one the rebels are running from the empire...ahem i mean from the first order and then in the third movie Luke..ahem I mean Rey defeats Palpatine.

i see your point but in all honesty thats what makes it so amazing. the way luke took the high ground like obiwan, in which vader aknowledged it, the way a little bit of anakin seeped through to obiwan and asohka before being snuffed out its truly amazing

With the Kenobi series I never watched past the 2nd episode so I didn’t know about Kenobi going to the underwater fortress that’s in Fallen Order. My buddy was telling me about it and I was immediately disappointed, I don’t have any context on why Kenobi went there but playing Fallen Order that’s Kals story, he should’ve been the only jedi going there imo.

  • @Eodeon

The argument makes sense only because you forgot to include the fact that cartoons that you mentioned were even less original than latest shows since they "borrowed" even more from previous contributions. But the general idea that Star Wars recycle too much is valid. It's just something that's been happening for decades. Why bring it up now, when there is even less chance that it would change.
