  • Here I go over how I apply Standox wet on wet primer to new panels.
    spraying wet on wet primer is essential for new panels and here is a kind of how to, or at least how I do it.

    Amazing job Paul! I have a question, I watch the Standox demonstration video and they suggest no flash time between first and second base coats, do you actually let it flash a bit when spraying Standox base? Any bad effect if letting it flash?

    • @paulphillipspaintwork
      @paulphillipspaintwork  Před 2 lety +2

      Hi, great question. You can apply 2 coats if needed. But you should try and apply it in one visit without over loading the base as that can cause issues in the clear (typically solid colours). In this case I didn't have full coverage on the edges of the solid black so I had to put a 2nd coat on, where as I applied the blue base in correctly in one application 👍
      I'll link the Standox video on solid colour and clear issues due to over application of base they explain it really well and show applying multiple coats. Thanks for the question.

    Fantastic job from start to finish Paul, simply an outstanding finish on the clear and that bonnet is just like a mirror.
    I mainly use the Roberlo MultyFiller Express for my high build and WoW primer, if I use it as a high build then leave it a couple of days and then block and da it I don't have any problems with the end result and the clearcoat looks great but if I use it as a WoW I always get gloss drop or dieback (not sure what it's called) and the clearcoat looks textured/peeley with a lower gloss than usual so I avoid using it as much as I can, you have seen my panels I paint on my IG page so you know I'm just a hobby painter in my homemade booth but I want to learn all I can about painting which includes the wow process, think I've told you before but the next time I use it I want to put it through a viscosity cup to make sure it's correct as the primer is well over a year old, cheers 👍

      Thanks John, yea I've seen your work mate it's quality. Are you leaving it long enough to flash off before you put base on? I'm wondering if it could be trapped solvents? That's the only thing I can think of.
      I was thinking about doing some DIY videos so from my garage to show how I work in a DIY situation and show my set up and compressor. And answer any DIY questions. I think it might be good cause not everyone has access to a fully equipped bodyshop.

      Thanks for the reply Paul, yeah I normally leave my wow primer over night especially this time of year, it's defiantly user error and all I can think of is that I'm over applying it or it's to thick, the primer is over a year old so it may have thickened up so I'll try the din4 cup see if that helps.
      I would love to see you do some DIY videos Paul, my setup is fairly good as I did put a fair budget into the build, I'm using 2 extraction fans which can pull 4500cfm but are variable speed, compressor isn't that good but has 14cfm I also have a dropout filter before a 3stage for my air fed mask, heating is a hot air diesel which can get y booth up to 24C when it's 1C outside 👍

      @@JohnWD40TC02 I was just looking for the tds and can't find one for wet on wet. Are you using the p5000 hardener and mixing it 4:1? (Your primer may just be a high build primer I have found roberlo multi seal (their wet on wet i think)) the Standox system has a dedicated high build and a dedicated wet on wet so roberlo could be the same.
      Wet on wet usually has quite a lot of thinners (30%) and the flash times are similar to base coat (10-15 mins) so leaving it overnight would require prepping before base is applied.
      But I'm don't know the roberlo system so I could be wrong.

    • @JohnWD40TC02
      @JohnWD40TC02 Před 2 lety +1

      Sorry Paul but I've only just seen your reply (didn't get any notification from YT), yeah the Roberlo MultyFiller Express is a WoW primer as well you just mix it 3:1.5:1 and replace the thinners with the NS21 non sanding converter.
      Anyway as you know I use the Kapci solvent scheme and after talking to the rep he came up with the Kapci 626 high build and wow primer that is mixed 5:1:2 for wow, used it on 3 panels so far and it's looking great (vids on my IG page) and it's also tintable using 5% 2K direct gloss tinters, time will tell to see how it goes, thanks for all the help Paul.

    Hi Paul, another question off the topic of your video but only painter ino on CZcams with alotbkf 90 line experience, do you strain the base coat.. primers?? Just i find i grt alot more bits in my basecoat than when I used spies hi tec? Thanks any tips appreciated

    • @paulphillipspaintwork
      @paulphillipspaintwork  Před 2 lety

      Hi Jay, I used to strain the primer only. We did use the 125 micron pps pots so the built in strainers were the finest.
      I did notice a few more base inclusions, I believe for me at least it was because I was applying 2 coats and a drop so essentially 3 visits to the car instead of 1 so it had more chances of stuff landing in the wet base. I found it best not to use a hand held venturi blower to dry the base as this would blow more dirt towards the wet paint. Have you tried a stat gun between coats this might help but I never tried it with 90 line but have one now and it does make a difference. Hope this helps but it's a tricky one mate

    Hi Paul .
    Great vid .
    Do you not drop coat the bonnet ? I use spies Hecker which I believe is very similar to Standox and they always recommend a drop /effect coat ,just wandering if it’s something I can avoid to save time ? Also where do you get the regulator gauge guard for your gun looks really handy .
    Many thanks Ian

      Hi Ian, thanks.
      I only put one coat (no drop coat) underneath the bonnet. I did go back over the top of it with a drop coat, I had to check though. Had me worried for a min as that car has gone back to the customer lol. The regulator guards came with the regulators. I'll see if I can find a link for you. Thanks 👍

    Can you tell me what grit to sand the old OEM paint with sandpaper BY HAND. I read 2 TDS of two "wet on wet" products - Standox and HBbody , but never saw what grit the panel must be sanded before spraying "wet on wet" primer. The job is - i must spray grey wet on wet primer and then single stage yellow. My guess is P600?
