When they finished the song though we all stood up and clapped for 5 minutes. Nobody could believe what just witnessed. Absolutely epic, it’s impressive. Oh yeah probably you would be sick watching the waves, the screen behind them, at Wembley Arena is one of the best in the world. Nightwish live concerts are more than music, it’s pure art. This is a very emotional song, especially for the keyboard player Tuomas. He wrote this after the release of their first singer Tarja. There was worldwide backlash over the decision, and Tuomas took the blunt of it. So mush so he sank into deep dark depression and contemplated suicide. Then his friend Tony Kakko from the band Sonata Arctica came to visit and they went camping and Tony told him that suicide was not the way, as it would hurt more people than he realized. After the trip Tuomas wrote this song that describes what he went thru and in the song he does commit suicide. When they perform this song(not often) he has the vocals switched off in his in-ear monitor so all he hears are the words, it still effects him 12 years after the fact. If you notice at the end Marco(bass player) and Emppu(guitar player come and stand next to him as a show of support. Not only are they a band, but they are close friends, and most important they are family, and they live it everyday.
This is my favorite song! Nightwish is my favorite band!! The keyboardist tuomas is the heart of the band he writes 95% of all music and lyrics. There have been a few different vocalists over the years but they remain nightwish because tuomas is nightwish!

Yep this is how Floor works. You get transported to another world and she steals your heart while doing it. Pitty you missed the "Thank you" comment after the song was finished. She pours her heart out to the crowd and then says "Thank you" like she needs to appologize to you for listening. But make no mistake about that you are now her willing slave forever. Poe's short story "The Pit and the Pendulum", but also songwriter was in a really dark place, after they parted ways with the original singer Tarja Turunen. This happened 2005. If you want to dig a little bit deeper into their history, I recommend something from End of An Era-concert. "The Siren" OR "Phantom of the Opera" (cover version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's famous musical) Thank you and cheers!
Kari your so right...i do feel a little bad being so giddy about a song that has a bit of a sad story behind it but gosh darn it they are so good!! Thanks for the comment and the suggestions!!
@@chasalbert5113 Don't feel bad, bro! It's still kick ass song, and despite the story behind it, they also have fun on stage and truly enjoy playing it!
The singing at the very start is not her, its a backing track of a young boy from a choir. However in the studio version the high pitch part at 9:30 is also done by the young boy, Floor does a kick ass job at it though ;)
Others are already commenting about the dark meaning of this song. So A few heavier songs by them: Romanticide live at Wacken 2013 Yours is an Empty Hope live from MS Baltic Princess Weak Fantasy live from Tampere 2015
Yeah I kinda feel bad being so giddy over a song that has a sad story line but thy are so good I cant help it. :) Thanks for the new suggestions Michael !!
You should check out their Pink Floyd cover of High Hopes. Marco (the bassist) is an incredible vocalist too. A super long one that you don't realize is stupid long is the Greatest Show on Earth!
Blown away without any idea what the song is about. That's pretty impressive. The story on this one is extremely critical to feel the brunt of the intricacies of the music too. It's all musicianship on this ride.
Take note at the end (18:00) when Emppu and Marco (lead and bass) gather around Tuomas (keyboardist) in support because they know how much it hurts Tuomas to play this song. They don't play it much live for that reason.
This song is an emotional roller-coaster for Tuomas(keyboardist) as it spells out all the emotions he went through after the first singer, Tarja was let go and there was a huge backlash that blamed him for it. Now might be a good time to do some Tarja (operatic singer) before you venture into the Greatest Show on Earth. Might I suggest: Phantom of the Opera ( czcams.com/video/YJragdB6L4Q/video.html) Duet with Tarja and Gandalf !! Wishmaster (czcams.com/video/eJTlH521E6w/video.html) Heavier metal side of the band Nemo (czcams.com/video/ww2f4PPprSc/video.html)
I like how you feel the music.. You will get many suggestions for the third grand epic journey of Nightwish called The Greatest show on Earth and it's a must see but I think it's time for get a bit different so let suggest Weak Fantasy live at Tampere or Romanticide live at Wacken Open Air 2013. Looking forward to seeing you again..
I really appreciate the comment SymphoNickbul...the amount of material i have received to view from just this one band is awesome!! Thanks for the suggestions! :)
Wanna see Marco Gandalf Hietala sing really good, have a look at the Nightwish - Phantom of the Opera Live version from the End of an Era DVD. Back there with their first singer. In my opinion on of the best duets ever played.
That was gooood reaction, many thanks. You got a few suggestions what next you suppose to react and I agree with it. The Greatest Show on Earth, Romanticide, Storytime, Amaranth. Anyway, every live song from Wacken, Wembley, Tampere, Buenos Aires is great and your never be disappointed if you pick one from live setlists. Greetings from UK.
Everytime someone says "Never heard if them" I fall out of my chair... like *HOW?!* have you never heard of them? Im not saying that in a judgemental, "wow how have you never heard of them you pleb" way but rather that Im genuinly chocked. Dunno your age man but Id say youre roughly my age, give or take a couple of years and Nightwish has been THE band in symphonic metal since I was in junior high (mid to late 90s), they were practically mainstream, even played on radio *Before* the more rock oriented channels established themselves. Its incomprehensible for me that someone born between lets say 78 and 90 never heard of them. But I digress, as I said, Im not hatin on you my friend 😁 Im really happy for you to finally discover them... *Everyone* deserves Nightwish. And you make good reaction videos, they feel very honest and genuine and you seem really emotionally invested. 🤘😎👍
You should check up the story behind this song.. you will appreaciate the song even more.. this song has a very heavy story for the whole band and all fans that has been with nightwish since the beginning.
the gandalf name is marco Hietalla and is full of surprises you must check he singing with floor a schubert's aria -ave maria (marco Hietalla -floor jansen ave maria schubert ) or the nightwish cover of pink floyd song high hopes . you have seen 2 great epics of nightwish the other is "great show on earth live tampere 2015" a song of 20 min length but it ends so fast . enjoy the ride .
@arnaldo tanta The video of december 2017 ( published in jan.2018 ) is gone again. ( Blocked ) for the second time. Such a pity and such a shame. The only place I found this very good version was on a reaction channel: czcams.com/video/VVzex4rcFP0/video.html so you can listen to it, but with the reactor , maybe without screen. ;-) The older versions 2016 ( published in jan. 2017 ) are less good ( recorded )
New sub here! Loving your reactions so far. Nightwish is one of my favorites and you will probably never be disapointed. When Tuomas wrote Dark Passion Play they had just fired Tarja and hadn't replaced the lead singer yet. Marco sung on most of the demo tracts, there is a demo version of this with just him singing that you might want to check out. There are some darker lyrics that got changed once final production was done.
that version has way too is more much anger to it. the final version is much more sublime. i wonder if there are mounds of studio sessions lying about, giving us insight to how they develop their songs. this is so sophisticated that i doubt these are one and done recordings. nuclear blast must spend a ton in studio time for these guys.
Great reaction! Both of the songs you heard were definitely "epics", but there's another shorter one from the Wacken 2013 concert called Ever Dream that's really good (in my opinion). Great drumming, and backing vocals from Marco ("Gandalf" as you call him). Check it out if you get a chance!
The Greatest Show on Earth is another VERY long one, and a journey. (It's a song about the history of the universe and of the evolution of life, and human culture; I presume it's named after the Richard Dawkins book with the same title.) But before going into that, I suggest taking a foray into one or two of their shorter pieces, including some that are a little heavier. I suggest "Song Of Myself" and "Romanticide" for that. Both live, of course, from the Wacken 2013 concert. 😎
Yeah J.Lahtinen two songs i have reacted to have been quite long..enjoyed every second but long none the less!! :) Thanks for the suggestions i really appreciate it!!
7:30 We Nightwish fans know what is happening, you are one of us now! And this journey is goign to lead you to The Greatest Show On Earth @ Tampere 2015, where u will meet your nemesis again, the waves of the ocean on the background screens! Their most epic and longest rollercoaster song of em all. I am sure u wil enjoy that one even moreso!
Another great reaction chad to an emotional rollercoaster of a song! Would love to see you react to a 3rd epic the greatest show on earth live at Tampere. The song is a poetic brief summary of the creation of Earth, life as we know it, evolution, and Earth's "roadtrip" through the aeons. Numerous scientific and historic references all over the place so grab yourself a wikipedia if you're going to make full sense out of it! To get you going: The cosmic law of gravity (self explanatory) Pulled the newborns around a fire (Creation of our galaxy, newborns=planets, fire=sun) A careless, cold infinity in every vast direction (self explanatory) Lonely farer in the Goldilocks zone (That is Earth, the only habitable planet) She has a tale to tell (Earth takes the main stage from now on!) From the stellar nursery into a carbon feast (Carbon feast = life as we know it) Enter LUCA - The last common ancestor of all, the beginning of all that was/is/will be alive in Earth enters the stage. Let the show begin :)
Floor jansens...thanks for the nice comment. Your list of video suggestions is awesome...you guys make it so easy on me...i have material for months!! :)
Great reaction, love the enthusiasm...knew you’d love this one, looking forward to the next one😊 Know what you mean about the Floyd comparison,I saw Floyd a couple of times and there’s a definite similarity in how they put the music to pictures 👍
Its funny that you imagine the water so much, Tuomas (keyboard player and composer of most songs) is fascinated by the ocean, he started to study sea biology at some point before Nightwish took off. The ocean and water analogies are very common throughout all of his compositions. It's funny how certain melodies just evoke images, and in this case they actually added it ont he background. It might seem like coincidence sometimes, but Tuomas knows very well what he is doing. It's genius stuff man.
That is what i love about music so much..it effects everyone so differently!! I have been hammered by some folks for not spending more time on the meanings of their songs...this is only the 3rd time in my life i have heard this band so i am just amazed at them as performers and musician right now, i think the meanings of the songs and words will come later. Even still there are some bands i enjoy strictly based off their music and not their song writing ability! Music is great in that way. Thanks Carlos for the comments and watching my video! Have a good one bro!!
you are on about the rollercoster ride Nightwish are taking you on ............... well check out Nightwish: last ride of the day song \m/ I've seen Nightwish twice at Wembley in London , they were amazing gigs , totally awesome ! \m/
Hehee. Now you only have to see the third song from their Holy Trifecta called The Greatest Show on Earth! :) you'll love it. Nightwish has so many good songs, you will love them for a long time. If you ever wanna chat with more NW fans, come to our discord server too! :) discord.gg/NrTUWyS
don't know if you already did a video reaction on „Song of myself” and „Ever dream”, but those two are a must; both sang by Floor Jansen, Nightwish live from Wacken
Chas, when you do the Greatest Show on Earth be sure to watch it all the way to the end. You will think it is over when the song stops but there is more to it. Just a heads up
Another mind is blown! Which is always a good thing. I highly recommend - the Warning!, 3 sisters 19,16, 13 from Mexico that write their own music; rock is in good hands (Dust to Dust - THE WARNING - LIVE at Lunario CDMX), Rammstein - Engel (Live from Madison Square Garden); A German industrial metal band. Motion Device - Drama Queen; A Canadian Hard Rock band comprised of Sisters and Cousins; Liliac - Chain of Thorns; Another Rock family-based band. Another in the vein of Nightwish is Epica - Sancta Terra (feat Floor Jansen) Live Retrospect show - Rock on and keep reacting!
wow...that doesn't surprise me, those two bands are similar in the fact that their shows are very visually driven. Awesome back drops and awesome songs to carry you along the way!! Thanks LaPulga!
@@chasalbert5113 yeah u should check it out, it's a live performance from their End of an Era tour from 2005. Another one you should checkout is Phantom of the Opera from the same gig it's with their first singer Tarja Turunen.

The growling Viking dude you call Gandalf is Marco Hietala, and you may be intrigued to know he does classical opera as well and has a beautiful operatic voice! Search on "Marco Hietala Ave Maria" for a duet of that classic with Marco and this same female singer, Floor Jansen. ....... I heard you make a comparison to Pink Floyd. You may also like to know that Nightwish did an awesome Pink Floyd cover with their first singer Tarja Turunen (one of the original founding members of Nightwish) at her last concert in 2005. Search on "Nightwish End of an Era High Hopes." Welcome to the Nightwish family. They're not just a band but an adventure!
And to copy paste my own words said many times. This is from 2 weeks ago though in an other reaction vid.. " NW dont make music. NW takes you on a journey. And when you follow them, you will see things only NW can show you. If you do not go on the journey, you will just hear music and not get what the band is giving you. Like the journey of life, there is many different states to go through, some will bring you to tears. others will make you laugh. Those things, tells you that you did join NW on there journey. You understand what you where given. Not a song, not a piece of text, you where taken on a journey, you walked a path that lead you somewhere you had never been before. That is NightWish. " And on an other information note. Its not her voice in the beginning, they had backtracking made. The light tracking voice is a young boy. and.. just something i always look at. When Marco (Gandalf) sings... Look at how he plays the base all along..
I appreciate your enthusiasm in your reactions. You should react to Unleash the Archers-Awakening, or Eluveitie-Rebirth. Unleash the Archers is power metal, and Eluveitie is folk metal.
Way to ride this wave dude. This is one that gently releases you after a killer ride. Greatest Show on Earth is a tsunami. Friggin surfing metaphors. I can't help it.
I've listened it half a dozen times now. First time it was so complex, I had mixed feelings. Now I know it, and it's growing on me. I think it's best yet.
i always feel tired inside from all those emotions. Please check The greatest show on earth. Floor is the 3rd singer, please check live video with first one Tarja, she also amazing, just sing in operatic voice. Songs: The phantom of the opera, I wish i have an angel, Nemo (live, The end of the era)
Since everyone else has more than commented on the music from the official videos .. just a caution that some reviewers have taken hits from reviewing some of the singles .. evidently the music company slams with CZcams copyright .. the more knowledgeable can comment on that. Exelent reaction the Nightwish army greets you . Rewards from Argentina
LOOK HERE !!! ...IF YOU ARE GOING TO BE A TRUE NIGHTWISH FAN .......DONT BE INTERRUPTING FLOOR WHILE SHE IS IN GODDESS MODE !!...
LOL...I hear you...rules are rules!! :))))
Others are already commenting about the dark meaning of this song. So A few heavier songs by them:
Romanticide live at Wacken 2013
Yours is an Empty Hope live from MS Baltic Princess
Weak Fantasy live from Tampere 2015
Might I suggest:
Phantom of the Opera ( czcams.com/video/YJragdB6L4Q/video.html) Duet with Tarja and Gandalf !!
Wishmaster (czcams.com/video/eJTlH521E6w/video.html) Heavier metal side of the band
Nemo (czcams.com/video/ww2f4PPprSc/video.html)
Night Wish your not kidding on the roller-coaster bit...This band...I love it..just love it...Thanks for the suggestions and comments!!
Hi, Chas! You are so positive man and I'm glad to see your reaction! Welcome to ''Planet Nightwish'' - The greatest band on Earth and musical orgasm!
LOL..Thanks Kristian for the awesome compliment!! :):)
Again a very nice reaction video!
Keep on the good and honest work here!
Tuomas loves water. So that may connect you 2. One of their albums is called Oceanborn.
Many thanks Luci Fer...yeah the suggestions i have received fro this one bands followers is immense!!
Never cut a Nightwish song until the video ends, you'll miss important things
It's not only music. It's a masterpiece of feelings set to music...
Awhh... You missed her sweet and humble 'Thank-you' at the very end.(sigh)
Yes, especially with Nightwish, one should listen each and every second of the song..
"Sweet and humble" yeah, that "thank you" is full of feeling.
You are so right Mountain Metal..........
Heavy Sigh hpffff in here , waiting for THANK YOU damm o well i play the dvd for my self and gone listning to it Bey 😤😥
I have a feeling he might watch it again. I did, several times. Feels better and better.
the gandalf name is marco Hietalla and is full of surprises you must check he singing with floor a schubert's aria -ave maria (marco Hietalla -floor jansen ave maria schubert ) or the nightwish cover of pink floyd song high hopes . you have seen 2 great epics of nightwish the other is "great show on earth live tampere 2015" a song of 20 min length but it ends so fast . enjoy the ride .
Thanks Erica...Yeah i am just floored at how good this band is!! It has been like Christmas for me..:)
that version has way too is more much anger to it. the final version is much more sublime. i wonder if there are mounds of studio sessions lying about, giving us insight to how they develop their songs. this is so sophisticated that i doubt these are one and done recordings. nuclear blast must spend a ton in studio time for these guys.
The lyrics on this one are super deep
Yeah that's why I feel a little bad being giddy at how good it is!! Thanks Requinix17 for the comment!
(It's a song about the history of the universe and of the evolution of life, and human culture; I presume it's named after the Richard Dawkins book with the same title.)
But before going into that, I suggest taking a foray into one or two of their shorter pieces, including some that are a little heavier.
I suggest "Song Of Myself" and "Romanticide" for that. Both live, of course, from the Wacken 2013 concert. 😎
They collaborated with Dawkins for the entire album.
To get you going:
The cosmic law of gravity (self explanatory)
Pulled the newborns around a fire (Creation of our galaxy, newborns=planets, fire=sun)
A careless, cold infinity in every vast direction (self explanatory)
Lonely farer in the Goldilocks zone (That is Earth, the only habitable planet)
She has a tale to tell (Earth takes the main stage from now on!)
From the stellar nursery into a carbon feast (Carbon feast = life as we know it)
Enter LUCA - The last common ancestor of all, the beginning of all that was/is/will be alive in Earth enters the stage. Let the show begin :)
Floor jansens...thanks for the nice comment. Your list of video suggestions is awesome...you guys make it so easy on me...i have material for months!! :)
Want a Marco (Gandalf) song? Try The Islander (Live At Tampere)
Thanks swerasnym for the heads up!!
Great reaction, love the enthusiasm...knew you’d love this one, looking forward to the next one😊
Know what you mean about the Floyd comparison,I saw Floyd a couple of times and there’s a definite similarity in how they put the music to pictures 👍
If you liked this one you will absolutely love "the greatest show on earth" also by them live at Tampere. You gotta check that one out too.
Thanks Maggie...the greatest show on earth seems to be a common suggestion!! ..:) Cant be bad!
When Tuomas had Tarja
He had a Stradivarius
When Tuomas had Anette
He had a Steinway
Tuomas has Floor
He now has the whole freaking Orchestra
did you notice how the song started with "The End" and ended with "the Beginning"? It is an important part in the theme of this song.
Freeze014 i did not but i will have another go at it!!...twisted my arm...:)
you are on about the rollercoster ride Nightwish are taking you on ............... well check out Nightwish: last ride of the day song \m/ I've seen Nightwish twice at Wembley in London , they were amazing gigs , totally awesome ! \m/
I like your enthusiasm :) I also think that you should be on a radio!
J Nybergh thanks for the awesome comments!! ;;)
you missed the "Thank you....."
Yeah i know Kriztian5HUN i have been hammered from many followers for my mistake..:) I have learned my lesson no doubt!!
Hehee. Now you only have to see the third song from their Holy Trifecta called The Greatest Show on Earth! :) you'll love it.
Nightwish has so many good songs, you will love them for a long time. If you ever wanna chat with more NW fans, come to our discord server too! :)
discord.gg/NrTUWyS
Thanks for the invite trinxikene...I have never seen a band with more devote followers!! Thanks for the suggestions as well!!...:) Good Times!!
Chills every TIME!
Floor is really a blessing for us
this is why theyve stood the test of time.
You'd vom after drinking because of the background, and I'd be a sloppy mess on the ground, crying my damn eyes out.
don't know if you already did a video reaction on „Song of myself” and „Ever dream”, but those two are a must; both sang by Floor Jansen, Nightwish live from Wacken
Nightwish -Song of Myself from Wacken you will LOVEIT
We've got another one drowning in the nightwish.
Funny you should mention Pink Floyd, they actually made a cover of High Hopes it's really good also.
wow...that doesn't surprise me, those two bands are similar in the fact that their shows are very visually driven.
They used the same studio once as the Beatles for the backtracks: Onley difference now is that Floor sings that awesome soprano bit, but you still hear the boy(s) in the other parts: Abbey Road Studios, London Recording Dark Passion Play with orchestra: czcams.com/video/LAQRTCLbFOo/video.html Alsoo they used Angel Recording Studio's alsoo in London: NIGHTWISH - Angel Studios, London (OFFICIAL BEHIND THE SCENES): czcams.com/video/HcxjKlUcjXo/video.html 😎
Another band in the same league in my humble opinion is "Epica" and well worth a look
Great reaction!
When you react to the greatest show an earth, make sure you watch the whole video as the orchestral composition continues after they stop playing
Thanks for the heads up RustySpace...i have been reprimanded for stopping the videos too early...I am learning my lesson!! :)
"
NW dont make music.
"
And on an other information note.
Its not her voice in the beginning, they had backtracking made.
The light tracking voice is a young boy.
and.. just something i always look at.
When Marco (Gandalf) sings...
Look at how he plays the base all along..
So true, Nightwish is a journey in music...a music experience for your soul
I appreciate your enthusiasm in your reactions. You should react to Unleash the Archers-Awakening, or Eluveitie-Rebirth. Unleash the Archers is power metal, and Eluveitie is folk metal.
Thanks Andrew...i really appreciate it !!
You felt Floors love too, great reaction
beautiful
Nightwish song you should check - I Want My Tears Back (live in Wacken 2013).
try High Hopes (live) and you'll listen the great Marco's (Gandalf 😂😂) voice
Way to ride this wave dude. This is one that gently releases you after a killer ride. Greatest Show on Earth is a tsunami. Friggin surfing metaphors. I can't help it.
i love ur reactions so honewst ty foir that
I've listened it half a dozen times now. First time it was so complex, I had mixed feelings.
Now I know it, and it's growing on me. I think it's best yet.
it is their best. a gut wrenching ending
The person singing in the very beginning was a young boy and not floor. He shows up a few times.
i always feel tired inside from all those emotions. Please check The greatest show on earth. Floor is the 3rd singer, please check live video with first one Tarja, she also amazing, just sing in operatic voice. Songs: The phantom of the opera, I wish i have an angel, Nemo (live, The end of the era)
Next up Song of myself or romanticide 🙏😎
Juha thanks for the suggestion...i am getting bombarded with ideas!!..:) This is awesome.
Since everyone else has more than commented on the music from the official videos .. just a caution that some reviewers have taken hits from reviewing some of the singles .. evidently the music company slams with CZcams copyright .. the more knowledgeable can comment on that. Oh .. and Floor .. magnificent .. note that she stands 6'-1" in her stocking feet .. and she wears heels ...
The Piece of master
