Krakatoa - K'Nex Roller Coaster

  • This is my 16th K'nex roller coaster, featuring a cable launch, volcano theming, and an industrial ride control panel. The launch, block sections, and station are fully automated with Arduino and servo motors.
    Music: "Fiery Stars" and "Designed Dreamer", both by Jeremiah Pena. He's one of my favorite film/game composers! Check out more of his music at jeremiahpena.com or soundcloud.com/jeremiahpena.
    Make sure to check out SSCoasters.net if you have any interest in K'Nex!
    Krakatoa took 2 months to build from start to finish. The ride concept was inspired by Volcano: The Blast Coaster and Intamin's hydraulic launch system. The ride is automated with an Arduino Uno, 6 micro servo motors, an incremental encoder, and a contact switch. The control panel uses Allen-Bradley 800H buttons and switches, and it allows you to run the ride with 2 trains in either manual or automatic mode. I initially designed the coaster layout in NoLimits to plan how it would integrate with the volcano's terrain and internal structure. The volcanic rock texture was created using crumpled brown paper, spray-on orange peel wall texture, black spray paint, and LOTS of hot glue.
    This video was filmed on my Sony a6000 camera, and the slo-mo was shot on my Galaxy S8.

    That launching mechanism allows this builder to build a WWII battleship with a launchpad. The Fighter jet can be drone with helium balloon in them, remotely controlled on the smart phone. The drone can carry sugar glider or trained mice, or trained praying mantis (can be trained, they are smart). Perhaps huge jumping spider too, smart too, but no one trains them before. The spiralling movement is rare to see, great work. The mountain and the tunnel are the works of an artist. The realism of the panel is just superb.

    I love building model coasters. I’ve made them out of steel and brass tubing. The problem you encounter with model coasters is that they don’t have the weight of full size coasters so the inertia is awkward. It’s the mass that makes them move forward for a long time even on a relatively horizontal plane. Model coasters also lose momentum as the track sways and energy is transferred to the track.

  • @modelrollercoasters
    @modelrollercoasters Před 4 lety

    Personally, this is the best CZcams video for a K'nex coaster I have ever seen. You did wider shots and didn't shot the same thing over and over and over. Getting technical to how he did all of this in knex I have no fucking clue, but basically there is a band that runs the length of the launch that has a launch dog which attaches to a hook on the train. The motor propels the entire band, basically working as a super powered chain lift

    By far the best cinematography I have possibly seen. The extra detail is great. I love the custom made volcano, nice touch! Also, what do you use sensor wise to detect the train? (Proximity switch?). Also, why didn't you just solder onto the existing Knex motors? Love the control panel, I want one haha! How did you make it man? Great coaster and great use of electronics! 😄👍

    • @RyanONeill13
      @RyanONeill13  Před 6 lety +5

      Wow, thank you!! The sensor in the station is just a simple contact switch - it closes the circuit when you press it. I didn't solder onto the K'Nex motors because that would have drawn too much current through the Arduino. And I didn't want to buy a separate power supply. So it was simpler to keep them battery-powered and switch them on and off with a servo!
      The control panel and buttons were actually given to me by a friend, but it's pretty easy to make if you have the right tools (and are willing to spend tons of money on those buttons). There's tutorials online for it! However, I made the legend plates and did all the wiring myself.

    • @Samuel_Hearfield
      @Samuel_Hearfield Před 6 lety

      Ryan O'Neill Nice! How difficult was the actual coding itself? I find that Arduinos have a limited number of ports so what would you use to increase more port space? More Arduinos or pin extenders? I am currently in the beginning of making a Knex Micro Invert and I will be using (like you) an Arduinos to control the whole thing.

    • @RyanONeill13
      @RyanONeill13  Před 6 lety +1

      The coding of each function was easy. I hard-coded a separate timeline for the Launch Reset, Advance/Dispatch, and Launch functions. The timeline is a block of code that says "Servo A go to __ position... now wait __ milliseconds... Servo B go to __ position... now wait for contact switch..." and so on. The tricky part was coding the logic for the control panel, to make sure that it only runs each function when it's supposed to. I used a simplified finite state machine for that part (something I learned in my mechatronics classes).
      The Arduino Uno has 20 ports that can be used to control servos, read sensors, or switch LEDs. It has 14 dedicated digital I/O pins, but the 6 analog input pins can also be used as I/O. I used almost all 20 on this project, but most of the pins were used for interacting with the control buttons and lights. I doubt you would need more, but if you did, you could buy an Arduino Mega which comes with a lot more I/O pins.
      That's awesome! Will that be your first time automating a coaster with Arduino?
