    Color Lookup Tables are like Lightroom Presets, but way better!
    Color Lookup Tables have existed in Photoshop since the inception of CS6 and I just now took the time to understand them. How many times has that happened to you. You get so comfortable with a program or some sort of software that you fail to recognize the power of something new. Color Lookup Tables are nestled in with the rest of your adjustment layers, but if you don't know what they do or how to use them you likely never will.
    Earlier this week I was staring the recording for "The Artist's Eye: A Closer Look" when I stumbled upon Color Lookup Tables. Mid recording I accidentally clicked on the Adjustment Layer and didn't see anything happen to my image. So I started dabbling with the loaded Tables and was in shock by how fast I had a new look on my photo. I stopped the production of the course to take a deeper look at them.
    I went from selecting the tables that were present in the adjustment layer to the Adobe help site which I frequent often when I stumble upon something new. There I saw that I could create my own Color Lookup Tables from any document that had a background. Click, the light bulb came on and I was off to the races. I have spent the last 3 days fully engulfed in Color Lookup Tables. I even lost sleep thinking about them the other night. Really, when it comes to new things in Photoshop I am like a kid who does not want to go to bed when they get a new toy.
    Today's tutorial will answer the following questions:
    1. What are Color Lookup Tables?
    2. Where can they be used?
    3. How do I use them?
    4. How can I make your own?
    5. How can I Load them?
    6. How can I make them readily accessible in Photoshop?
    Number 6 is the real winner here. They can be a pain to load in every time you want to use them. The key is to find where they are stored on your computer, not within Photoshop. I'll show you how I found mine during the tutorial.

    My new favorite 'trick' in the color grade stage of my edits! It's great; making actions to apply favorite LUT profiles is a great time save and a way to create several 'looks' to compare

    Great and very informative tutorial. I have ventured over into the Color Lookup Tables before and used them sparingly because I couldn't find the right "application" to use them on. Your tutorial certainly opens up a new range of understanding, possibility and workflow for me! Thanks for sharing the knowledge!! Kudos...........

    Hi Blake,
    I'm sorry to say that I ran into some unexpected "problems" following your how-to steps.
    I did as you suggested and placed the adjustment-files I wanted to include in a group and then on export as LUT I thought I would just save the group. But no, all other layers were included as well, whether they were active or inactive.
    So it seems there are certain restrictions here. In the Adobe-help-files they don't even speak of putting them in an group first. So it seems it's not the group but just the whole file (all layers whether active or not) that gets included on export.
    Wouter

    I have CS6 extended, however I do not have the export as LUT in the export menu.
    I have looked through all the other menus but can find no way of exporting as ICC lut file. I am running PS on a windows machine. Is there any other way of saving those adjustment layers as a preset?
    Thank's for posting these tutorials, very useful, thank you.

      +Colin Cubitt I'm not quite sure yet Colin. I will see if I can load up my version of CS6 and come up with a solution.

    • @colin-4794
      @colin-4794 Před 8 lety +1

      I appreciate that Blake.
      Please don't feel you have to chase this too hard for me ;-) It is possible that there is no workaround with my version of Photoshop and I need to upgrade.
      I suppose I could create the look that I want and save it with a small size ps image that I can easily reload and copy the settings from for new images, but it's not a quick simple method such as your's.
      You have a great channel on CZcams and I think the re-branding was a good idea.
      All the best,
      Colin.

    • @f64Academy
      @f64Academy  Před 8 lety +1

      Thank you, +Colin Cubitt ! What a pain. I looked into it and did not see a way to export them in CS 6. It looks like you can only load LUT's from other places but cannot export them.
      The alternative, I'd suggest recording the Action of you making the look and use Actions. That would solve the problem, but wouldn't require the use of LUT's. Sorry, that's the best I've got for ya!

    • @colin-4794
      @colin-4794 Před 8 lety

      Thank you for checking Blake, I guess recording the action as you suggest is the only way with my version

    Maybe you can answer this for me. So, I know that each person has their "style". Some are clean and light, others could be dark and moody. Besides someone's personal style, would these color looks ups, or gradings, be used to give a sense of continuity? I see so many great photographers, who shoot all sorts of different photos, edit them to all look the same giving continuity. That's so difficult to do if you're not in the same light/setting for all your photos. I personally like light and airy photos, but even all my light and airy photos differ from one another. Would this help?

    A few questions arise.
    1. Can gradient maps be saved in a LUT? In other words, will the LUT know what colors are used in that gradient map?
    2. Can hand painted layers be saved in a LUT with their corresponding blending mode? Or are LUTs limited to adjustment layers only?
    3. Are masks of adjustment layers saved in a LUT?
    4. Can LUTs be put in subfolders of the LUT directory, and that subfolder become collapsible in the list of LUTs?
    5. Can sharpening layers created with Filter/Other/highpass be saved in a LUT?
    6. Can a LUT, after fine tuning it to an image (lowering opacity, changing or adding hue setting, or adding a new adjustment layer etc.) be re-saved using a different name?
    I know that's a lot of questions, but I seem to be spending more time learning than doing. Please save me some time. I think these LUTs are the last on my list to learn (I hope).
    You the man, +Blake! Most all of your videos are clear, to the point, and intelligent. I really appreciate all that you've done for the PS community and I think I speak for others when I say this. You're a good man, Charlie Brown! PS would be much more difficult without what you've contributed. Thanks for every video you've provided!

    • @f64Academy
      @f64Academy  Před 6 lety

      1. Yes
      2. I wouldn't recommend painted layers or masks. Just ADJ Layers
      3. I wouldn't recommend masks with LUT's, that can get tricky.
      4. Not to my knowledge
      5. Probably not a good idea. They are pixel-based layers, pixel layers dont play nice with LUTS
      6. Yes
      Glad I can help. Just know there are three different types of layers:
      1. Vector based: Shapes and Text
      2. Pixel Based: Images and Masks
      3. Adjustment Layers: Curves, etc
      LUT's play nicest with Adjustment Layers as they know no bounds and are versatile. Pixel and Vector based layers are restricted to what they were used on.

    So in reality you are making Photoshop Presets like in Lightroom, and not Actions.

    • @f64Academy
      @f64Academy  Před 3 lety

      Not necessarily. I only say that because the effects of a preset are visible with slider adjustments even after they are made. With a lut those effects are baked in. Also LUTs can be used to make profiles for ACR and LR. So they are different, but have similarities.
