- Gunvein Expert Developer Commentary, Pattern Analysis and 1cc Discussion | Behind the Bullets. Not your average 1cc video. Today I am joined by Shmup Dev and friend of the channel @boghogstg to discuss my 1cc of the game's expert mode and to go in depth on the inspiration and philosophy behind the game's ship, level, and pattern design. I wanted to create a video that not only discusses ideas for game design, but also shows practical examples of the concepts on screen. Boghog is really fun to talk to generally, and it was cool to hear him discuss how he balanced and put together the elements of the game. I do hope shmup fans and action game fans generally tune in for this conversation, because we discuss not only how a shmup (bullet hell) can be influenced by games within its own genre, like Dodonpachi, Battle Garegga, or Touhou, but also how other action games, like Devil May Cry, inspired other elements of the boss fights and general game play.
I'm hopeful that if this format of video connects with you all, I can continue to do it for other games that I play through and enjoy. I said it in the video but I'll also repeat it here that if you are fan of shmups, or are interested in trying them out for the first time, Gunvein is an excellent starting point and it has a great blend of teaching the player the fundamentals of bullet hell dodging, while also teaching classic shoot em' up resource management, which is a tricky needle to thread in terms of game design. And if you have already played Gunvein and achieved the intense 1cc, I highly encourage you all to keep playing and go for the expert mode clear, which is extremely fun to practice and one of my fav expert clears I've done on the channel.
Gunvein is available on Steam (PC), and that's my favorite version of the game. But there is also a solid Nintendo Switch Port and hopefully someday we will get a PS4/PS5 release from NG Dev.

I m kinda curious why the thumb seems so effective ha. Having a babe is not unusual or anything, I wonder if mixing her in with the pink coloring causes some kind of powerful effect

This is completely unrelated but is it possible to update the switch version?, there are a few points where it slows down after using a bomb, and the game crashed on my 1cc attempts twice.

Wanted to chime in on the “best beginner shmup” discussion: I don’t think beginners should shy away from Garegga. I think that it’s stylistic quality as well as brilliant art and musical direction… tight action etc make for a game that needs to be experienced. Perhaps a beginner goes into it knowing it’s a hard game and gets mesmerized by it like so many of us have… anyways for me it was playing aero fighters and raiden at Pizza Hut when I was a kid that exposed me to the genre. The first strikers 1945 game got me hooked. And Battle Garegga became the apex. So on that note, I’m gonna say Aero fighters 2 is the best beginner shmup. It nails the basics, it’s not too hard and has fun characters .

Such a great video. Would love to see you two break Gunvein down across the three difficulties -- not like a full commentary on each run, but rather talk about how difficulty was balanced to keep each mode engaging and fun for different skill levels.
Im not the biggest shmup fan. Im not good at games in this genre. But I do enjoy playing them from time to time despite being terrible at the games. I have never even been close to 1cc even easy difficulties. All things considered I still got motivated to buy this game after watching about half of the video and so far I really like it. Though that Stage 3 boss is next level compared to the first stage bosses. Great video, great game.

Cool video, it was really fun listening to both of you get excited to explain the game and the plays. I played the demo of Gunvein and I had to get it, so I am waiting form my Switch copy and can't wait to put some time into it.
This was great! Hope you do more of these. I recently did an Intense clear, so I can relate to a lot of what you said, especially that 3rd boss. I really enjoyed what Boghog did with limiting resources in this game. It encourages the player to use bombs and score. The biggest flaw I found with Gunvein was the strong sense of déjà vu that I experienced with a lot of the patterns. Hopefully Boghog can create something a bit more unique next time. He obviously has the Danmaku fundamentals nailed.

Those bomb patterns in stage 3 are so cool. I haven't tried Expert yet but I was getting back into Gunvein last week. I think my favorite thing about the game is that "bucket" sound effect when you use a full lock on shot. In my mind it sounds to me like launching a full bucket of paint at someone or when you play racquetball and just smash the ball on the wall.

You guys are absolute cyborgs. Idk how any of you 1cc these bullet hell shooters so easily. I can't even 1cc the original Donpachi 25 years later for god's sake.
I hope the commentary is a helpful learning tool! I know when you are first starting the genre is overwhelming, but it will start making more sense with time and practice

I have a question.
During the initial minutes of the video Mark you mention there is no Rank, and then Bog clarifies that there is rank in the switch version.
If that is so, I think it is fair to ask: other than rank, what are the differences between the steam and the switch version?
and, if rank is the only difference, how exactly does it work? and how does it compare to the steam version ? how is gameplay affected?

Man intense stage 4 did me in always, I’d just BARELY get by stage 3 boss on intense. But my resources are shot and I’m depleted as I limp into stage 4

Also when I was first watching this i was lifting, and i looked over when you did the little rewind and thought that one of the bosses had fired all of its bullets and was sucking them back into itself… like holy shit at this game design and holy shit at the practice mark must have done to just camp out at the bottom of the screen and anticipate these bullets 😂😅

Oh i don't think the ps4 version has been released yet, but it should be the same but less laggy (though that s just a guess)

Sorry, but I think Gunvein isn't helping with the feeling that Shmup fans want new Shmups to be like CAVE to be considered good. What do you think this says about the state of the genre?

EDIT: I don't think it's right to force new Shmup devs to that formula.

While I LOVE that final phase of the stage 3 boss, it always made me feel uncomfortable for some reason. Boghog’s explanation of its patterns makes perfect sense. 😅👍
