Awesome until they weren't. Unfortunate last few years other than 2017.
The program didn't recruit well enough to compete with programs like Alabama and Clemson and it showed the two times that MSU got blown out by Alabama.
If MSU ever wants to compete for a championship and not just a Big 10 conference championship they need to get better at recruiting and making coaching changes when necessary.
Other than that, nothing but respect for Dantonio for what he was able to do with his staff and players the majority of the time he coached there.

Yes they were fun times. But the part that got me mad was that Dantonio wouldn’t wanna change his ways and get rid of the offensive staff. But I still thank him for what he has done at msu

@@upbeatplays5264 You're right, and I was happy to see Michigan lose, but I want to see MSU be as competitive as Alabama and Clemson. And they had a chance but they just didn't recruit well enough nor upgrade coaching staff. I'm hoping Mel Tucker can start pulling in some top recruits so he can make MSU not only a great program, but one that won't get blown out by Alabama. Clemson was able to do it so there is hope for MSU.
But the only winning season that MSU has had since 2015 was 2017 when they won 10 games. Since then, yes they've made it to a couple of bowl games but I don't count those as winning seasons because all they really needed were 6 wins. Don't know about you, but I hope MSU and the coaches want to win 10 plus games each season, not just every few years and eventually championship.

State was as cool as you could get. I was accepted to Michigan, then attended the 10-10 tie & changed to State for the fall 67 class.

Unpopular opinion: I was actually a fan of Dantonio during his time at Michigan State. Sure, he had issues off the field and didnt do things to progress the program continually though his 13 years as head coach. But he helped bring us some of the most memorable games and outcomes that Michigan State has ever seen. Little Giants, Rocket, the 100th Rose Bowl, the major comeback against Baylor, the triple OT game against Georgia, the muffed punt. He will truly go down as one of my favorite coaches thus far for Michigan State and I hope whoever takes his place is just as exciting to watch.

Coach Dantonio received a lot of criticism at the end of his tenure at Michigan State, but Mark was a really serious professional, and truly one of the best leaders of any program in the country. It was pretty disrespectful, as far as I see it, for some of the problems of the university to in some ways fall on his shoulders in the eyes of Michigan State fans. I went to basically every Michigan State football game from five years old until I graduated from high school in 2013, the year of Michigan State's Rose Bowl Victory (The Defensive MVP of the Rose Bowl was an older friend of mine from my school), and Coach Dantonio did Michigan State University a hell of a service with his work. The stadium was always electric, to note some of the most magical games in college football history (Michigan State v. Notre Dame - Fake Field Goal in Overtime, Michigan State v. Wisconsin - Hail Mary, Michigan State v. Michigan - Final Play Special Teams Touchdown), and the players always played with fire and love for the game. He didn't get the recognition that a lot of great coaches get like Saban or Paterno, but he took his first big opportunity and capitalized on it, bringing Michigan State their first Rose Bowl victory in generations and bringing lifelong fans of Michigan State University like me a great deal of pride. He took a program that was mediocre at best when he arrived and brought us to greatness. Thanks, Coach Dantonio. It's a beautiful day for football. Ahoo. Ahoo. Ahoo.

    Update:
The MSU board of trustees having a different direction with the football program including indirectly pressuring Dantonio into retirement and not really allowing Dantonio having a say on his successor when he was going to retire at a later time triggered him into a sudden retirement. In addition, Dantonio was clearly was going earn his bonus regardless of whether or not he was the coach by January 23rd.
MSU failed to hire Luke Fickell but they still hired Mel Tucker who not only looks very promising, he too was a former Saban assistant and also was a former assistant for the 2002 Ohio State national championship team like Dantonio was. Plus, Tucker is an elite recruiter and did great work at Colorado which was heading towards a dead program when he first took over.
The lawsuit with Curtis Blackwell appears to be favoring Dantonio since there has been no evidence of violations. Blackwell then continued to drag the case and included claims that Dantonio is a racist. There was no evidence for that either. Dantonio appears to be clean at this point.

You remind me of a more polite version of urinating tree, only 10 times better. Tree normally shits on failing programs or ones on the down turn, laughs at them, say they suck and move on.
But you take the higher road. You sympathize with these programs. Make them look like the tragic hero/ sympatetic villian when you could just take the easy rout and just point a finger and make jokes.

It took dantonio 8 years to get to the playoffs and harbaugh has only coaches 5 years at Michigan. So until harbaugh has coached at Michigan for 8 years you can’t say dantonio made it before him. Dantonio has a .667 win percentage at MSU and is regarded as the greatest coach in their history. Harbaugh has a .723 win percentage and their fans want him fired. That just shows the difference in the two programs and their coaches. Different standards

3 yards and a cloud of dust is thinking from the 1960s.in the 2020s it’s all about having a great quarterback and surrounding him with talent. MSU was great at developing 3 star players but when you get past the great 3 of Hoyer Cook and Cousins, the quarterback play was terrible and their record reflected it. You could blame this on many things or it may be a combination of thing like old school thinking, poor line play, poor coaching snd bad play calling and average skill position players. I hope MSU gets good again it’s hard to compete with the big boys when you are constantly ranked 30-50 in recruiting. They do make a lot of what they get, but there is a huge drop off between OSU and bamas 3rd snd 4th string snd MSUs.
