    Not mentioned in video: In 2019, ending 15-year win streak against their main rivals, the UVA Cavaliers. That was one of the pivotal moments that I felt really marked the end of the Glory Days.

      I remember watching that game. No doubt, it was a huge victory for UVA that won ACC Coastal Division for them. I know it's going to take a while to rebuild a once powerhouse but trust me, Virginia Tech will be contenders again not only in ACC, but I can see them contend for the College Football Playoff.

    • @kyleseiler3689

      To be fair it wasn't a rivalry for 15 years... Usually A rivalry consists of two equal teams constantly winning the trophy and usually it's 50/50 or 40/60 but it wasn't that we were so dominant over those 15 years (I was at tech from 01 - 06) but more that UVA was Horrible. They are getting better and UVA used to be a top 25 program too lets not forget. AND they spend MORE on their football program then we do. If people really want change and to get better they need to DONATE.
      Firing Fuente isn't going to solve a problem, because as my best friend who also went to tech mentions. its very possible and even likely we get worse, Look at Texas... Prime example.. they have more money in the sport then any team.. yet they consistently have gotten worse. The issue is outside of Alabama and Clemson most schools are about the same tier. Even Big name schools like Notre Dame, recruit well but just are an AVG team at best.
      Face it those years from 01 - 06 are gone. and we will likely never have multiple consecutive 10 win seasons again. but it is possible that they will win an ACC title again (maybe never a National title)

    Very interesting post. Thanks.
    VA Tech (as you note) is a bit down from the Beamer years. There are MANY universities that would love to have your record.
    However, on both the same and a larger issue,, the top teams in college football have shrunk in number to Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, maybe Notre Dame and Georgia, and once in while Auburn, Wisconsin, with occasional top tier appearances by Oklahoma, Texas, Michigan, and Oklahoma State. It appears to me that the top tier programs have scooped up the best coaches and players and the rest get who's left.
    My opinion is worth what you're paying - $0 - however, I think if the current trend of the same 3-6 teams come out on top every year, college football will have significantly less teams even playing in 3-5 years. It costs a lot of money to have a stadium, practice facilities, team dorms, Medical and Training staff, Coaches, travel, and of course, the Players.
    A university can afford to lose money on a football team for only so long - especially when they are playing to get beat by a top tier team.

    • @danielschultz96
      @danielschultz96 Před 3 lety

      yea the quality of competition is pretty shit now a days, ratings gonna keep going down and down as long as top teams dominate, having top tier teams isn't bad but when they are so overwhelmingly better, it's just not fun to pay attention during the regular season except for a few mark key games

    Never get rid of traditions it creates bad juju. Getting rid of the lunch pale reminds me of when Callahan became coach at Nebraska. He had the crown on the field at Memorial Stadium flattened out and he also decimated the walk-on program. The biggest thing though is that there is quality football talent in Virginia and I don’t know how the hell you don’t recruit well in YOUR own state.

    • @ReinSouls
      @ReinSouls Před 3 lety +2

      The key to success is having a monopoly on the top talent in your state. Then expanding your wings. While yes, Penn St. is 0-4 (they're still a good program). They have a monopoly on top players in Pennsylvania. And now that there's a power vacuum with Tech seemingly ignoring top level recruits in Virginia. Primarily in the northern portion of the state. Penn St. has chased the opportunity and has been dominating recruiting in NVA for the past several years. They can do that too giving they have their monopoly on their home turf. Funete is too big eyed on out of state recruits he's killed their in state advantage. And these are good players leaving Virginia. For crying out loud you had Yetur Gross-Matos an instate kid get drafted into the NFL. But he left for Penn St.

    I grew up down the road in Roanoke and I have to say it's pretty amazing what they were able to accomplish. If you've been to Blacksburg, you know it's in a beautiful area but the town itself is pretty underwhelming and it is very isolated. They also had almost no history before the late 90s. A friend of mine has a dad who went to VT back in the 70s and he said the pre-Vick years were almost unrecognizable compared to now because Lane Stadium used to be half full regularly and home games against teams like UVA and WVU often felt like road games. Really, they peaked at the right time, just as college football was exploding and ESPN/College Gameday maximized good vibes and coverage. For a solid 15-20 years, they were one of the most consistently good teams in the country and that Foster defense was nasty. They haven't been as good as expected this year and their recruiting classes for 2020 and 2021 haven't been great, so it will be very interesting to see what Fuente does next

    The problem vt has is the same problem a lot of schools have. (That aren't named Alabama, ohio st. Etc). They can scout their butts off and recruit the diamonds in the rough& develop them to and a few blue chippers but the problem remains. Depth. When you have a starter go down thats a kam chancellor or a fuller and its next man up, the talent level is way more noticeable. When you depend on developing talent over time and dont "plug and play" like bama its tough to compete. Depth is the difference in being a top 10 team and everyone else.

    Hokie fan since 99 here. For those of you who don't know, it's like following a team with the luck of the Cleveland Browns, and the history of the pre-2016 Chicago Cubs. We had the run in 1999 that fooled many including me into thinking it could happen again, because we'd seen it happen once. We had Vick getting injured 8 games into 2000 and killing any chance of us beating Miami that year. Nick Saban's LSU team came to Lane in 2002 and lost. Since then, well.... Even in the good years where ACC titles and BCS bowls were happening every so often, we'd always drop the "big game" on national TV, or worse, lay an egg against a team like JMU. We took "Clemsoning" and made it Chokieing. Things really started to slip towards the end of Frank Beamer's career, but through his first 2 years there was nothing to suggest Fuente wasn't the home run hire we all thought he was when he was announced.
    Instead, he has proven that he can't recruit, he can't evaluate film let alone talent, and he is unwilling or unable to surround himself with those who can. He stonewalls fans and the media like he's Saban or Belichick, with not even a fraction of their accomplishments to his name. The team, especially on defense, is Charmin ultra soft and the core guys who were freshmen in 2018 have never really learned how to win, they've just gotten older and continued to lose. There was that 6-1 stretch in the middle of last year but they pissed that away by losing to UVA and then the bowl game. It has become extremely taxing and exhausting to care about this team, and apathy has spread through most of the fanbase like wildfire. I say fuck it, yank the stakes out of the ground and start hardcore investing in Mike Young and the basketball team. I'm interested in rooting for winners, I'm not picky on the sport.
