Northmen Guild's Carpentry Course - Rising The Timber Frame

- Rising the small timber frame structure built in our 2018 May course. We built it using Scribe rule and French timber framing traditions in 9 days using only hand tools together with mostly non experienced students. Most of the timbers are hewn during the class. Hands not machines. P.S. This timber frame structure (along with the rafters that will be made later) is available to purchase. If someone is interested please write an email to guild@northmen.com.

Lucky for them that they didn’t have to go out into the forest, in the middle of winter, in sub zero weather, (to fell the trees), for which they are now hewing into the logs to build from. Thank you for setting up apprenticeships where many would not have the muster to go. The world NEEDS quality NOT quantity.

Beautiful structure, great video. Why no braces between the posts and plates? Just learning the basics of post and beam to start a project of my own.
There will be braces as well. Just we lost 2 days during the course because we all had some stomach virus. So missed one of those days to make the frame as it was planned.
Thank you for the explanation. Will you have to remove the plates to do the mortises and install the braces, or will you cut the mortises from below and just lift them slightly to fit the braces in?

downeast primitive skills do we even do that New England anymore
I have used similar truss design on a few occasions, also have a cruck black smith building.
