Hi, my name is Emi. I'm born in raise in small town just outside Quebec City, this is where my lovely accent comes from. My #vanlife story starts in September 2018. After a long-term relationship that I was trying for more than a year to rebuild, I decided it was time to end this toxic relationship once for all. This is where I decided to move away from this man that I was still in love with. I put all my belongings inside my SUV (GMC Jimmy) and moved six hours from where I was living. I didn’t know where I would sleep, didn’t know where I would work, but I knew I needed to make a drastic move. At that time, I told myself I would only sleep in my car for a month while looking for a place to rent. What I didn’t know is that one month became another month and another month. In the end, I end up sleeping in my car for a full year. Even if people consider this the lowest time of my life, this experience was the best thing I couldn’t have done with my life. I took that year to focus on myself, decide what I wanted, and most importantly, what I didn’t want. That year made me also realize that for so long, I was chasing the wrong dreams. I was chasing what society wanted me to be: to have a big house, a steady job, kids, get married… None of those dreams was making me happy. In September 2019, while I was actively looking for a van, I received a phone call that someone had found my cat (Kelly). After trying for hours with no success to communicate with my ex-boyfriend (who was taking care of her), I decided to drive the six hours to go pick her up. Without going into too much detail, it turns out he wasn’t able to take care of her anymore. So I brought her in a cat kennel for a couple of days until I found a van we both could live in. I put all the savings that I had accumulated while living in my car and bought my van (a 2011 Ford Econoline that I end up adding a hightop) In the beginning, It wasn’t so glamour. My cat and I were sleeping on a mattress on the floor of the van. We both had to adjust. Now, my cat loves this lifestyle as much as I do; she looks at the window while I’m driving, and she loves exploring new places. Since then, my cat Kelly and I have been living full-time in my self convert van.

Emi, For the past couple of months I’ve been trying to put my finger on what has changed about your videos. You seem even more grounded and are radiating a positive energy that is nice to watch. The wildlife content and scenery seem filmed differently too. Almost like something has shifted in the way you see the world.. or at least the way you capture it for us. It’s refreshing.

Twice a week is fine Emi and you could easily do a similar 20 to 30 minute video with content taken over 2 or 3 days rather than just one. Just don't put yourself under loads of pressure to 'perform'. We like seeing the ebb and flow of your normal day. Your wildlife stuff is always good for input, and Miss Kelly of course! 😊

Your videography in nature and in vanlife have always been good, but I have noticed a greater sophistication and detail in the video and storytelling in the past year or so. I would imagine that requires more time, so yes, please take time for yourself along the way. You have earned it. Always good to shift to neutral occasionally, just to allow you to catch up with yourself. Schedules can stifle the creative flow and scare away your muse. You and Miss Kitty should just allow the flow of nature to dictate your time and not stress over attempting to fulfill artificial deadlines. I took a trip to Vernon, Powell River, then Chemainus this summer. My son's dad was born and mostly raised there. I spent the day swimming at Fuller Lake. From Chemainus I went back to Vancouver and spent the night in a Walmart parking lot in Surrey , close to the border, then went camping in Washington at Lake Wenachee. I outfitted my van for camping with camping gear I had at home and I bought a van canopy from Princess Auto. That thing is the bomb. It turned out to be a great trip. I felt like a pseudo van lifer.😊
I think most of us understand. I know if I could afford to cut my work down to part time I would. I look forward to the day I may be able to stop and smell the roses.

I thought of you today while grocery shopping. I bought Brussels sprouts and made a stir fry like yours. It was so good! I can’t go vegan as I like paneer rather than tofu😂. Nice video as usual and I can’t get over how cozy your van looks.

Hello Emi and Kelly --- you have had a very busy 2023 and you really NEED to take some slow time and just physically and mentally recover from last year. Going to twice a week is great ... do what works for you .... when in doubt for content PLEASE just sit yourself down somewhere and do wildlife videos ... we all love those and you do an excellent job at it. You don't need to push like crazy to find something to post ... Canada is beautiful as the seasons change and we can be easily thrilled with seeing what you see. Hugs to you and Kelly -Gramma Lainee

I live in a tiny studio apartment in New York City, and my compensation for saving money in a tiny space, was the option of chilling at spacious local cafes and treating them like my living rooms. Great places to people watch and journal; a necessity for my mental health. I wonder if it's the same for you when the walls at home get to feeling just a little too close. Stretching out now and then relieves the pressure. I also think scheduling activities twice a week spread apart relieves stress and gives one something to look forward to, with rest spots in between. When you schedule according to your passion, rather than perceived obligation, I think the videos can only get better.
