- Unfortunately, most laws aren't put in place until they have to be put in place (i.e., something bad has happened). Usually, an event causes such a public uproar that legislation is nearly forced into having to enact some kind of law.
The source of the public outcry can be many different things. It might be a massive tragedy - such as a fire - where hundreds of people perish. It might be a piece of literature that is so graphic, that its readers demand a change to the system. Or it might be the story of an ordinary woman who found a decomposing slug in the bottom of her glass. Regardless of the reason, the following laws were all important in creating the working and living conditions that we're accustomed to today

All the existing safety measures we have are written in someone else's blood, sadly. The ones we need will be written in someone's too.
Well I wouldn’t say finally get a law passed. Tampering with stuff wasn’t even considered. Safety seals were put in to prevent it happening again because now the idea is out there. Laws were put in place to make sure companies complied.

Here’s one I think about a lot- The first anti-stalking law in the US was passed after the actress Rebecca Schaeffer was murdered in her doorway by an obsessive fan who had been stalking her. She was only 21 years old.

Similar to Australia, our neighbours across the ditch, New Zealand, passed new gun laws after the mass shooting in Christchurch a few years ago.

The way Jayne Mansfield died led to a law requiring trucks to have that extra bar (usually red and white stripes) below the trailer and above the tires.
Yes but contrary to popular belief, the bar only provides protection up to certain speeds. It's mostly the reflexive red and white stickers that are most effective to catch a driver's attention.
When you learn that her kids were in the back seat when it happened, it really is sobering. Mariska Haggarty is her daughter, no wonder she likes portraying a bad a$$ woman that takes down the criminally corrupt!
Now we just need to pass a law stating that Pharmaceutical companies cannot receive immunity from litigation if their products harm its customers.

The fact that pedestrian deaths from automobiles has SKYROCKETED the past 15 years and nothing has been done is disgusting. There's literally thousands of deaths yearly. Trucks and SUVs are bigger than ever and have over double the mortality rate if you get hit by one. Yet nothing is being done to shrink the size or improve sightlines (tall hoods are the major culprit). There's basically zero enforcement of drivers using a cell phone. If this many people were dying from pills, a disease or household product in the same timeframe there'd be an uproar. Instead, the majority just want a bigger vehicles and turn a blind eye.
I remember my mom dumping out the entire medicine cabinet. During the Tylenol cases…

The irony of Thalidomide is that it's been reintroduced. Not for nausea but for leprosy. One assumes that it's not given to pregnant women.
The USA has a lady (whose name I cannot remember, sadly) to thank for it not being allowed into the country. Look up the story and see what she went through, pressure-wise, by male scientists and others connected to importing drugs. She's a real heroine.

Only certain doctors can prescribe it, a woman must have two negative pregnancy tests before starting on the drug, use two forms of birth control while undergoing treatment, be periodically retested for pregnancy during treatment and continue to use birth control until 4 weeks after treatment ends.
Way to go Australia. While we offer prayers when a massacre happens, you lot actually went in and DID something.
Massive over reach by the Australian government. This clearly was a mental health issue.
We used to be like that, too. A few people died taking tylenol and every product gets seals. Now thousands get massacred and nothing changes.
They did nothing to stop the murder rate which stayed steady or increased slightly for than a decade after the gun ban. Violent assaults and sexual assaults went up dramatically as well. Essentially it was just a giant virtue signal that accomplished nothing other than the removal from individual citizens to protect themselves from criminals that never gave up their guns.
Yeah their violent crime and murder rate didn’t change at all but yeah it was the guns. We are blessed to live in a country with a 2A to protect us from tyrants in power

My dad keeps an annual tally of trick or treaters, going back to the 1960's. Prior to the Tylenol scare he was getting over 400 kids. But in 1982, the year of the scare, he got around 50. It ramped back up to around 250 the following year but his piece of notepaper that he keeps in his Halloween folder says "TYLENOL SCARE" in big letters.
These are the kind of stories that aren't taught at school but people *need* to know. ✊

It was a different time. I washed dishes in a restaurant at age 13 in the 1970s. Was that as bad as what kids endured 100 years ago? Of course not, but we can't judge what happened in the past by today's cultural norms. It's just dumb and unproductive.

The thing is it wasn't culturally accepted and people were fighting against it. Times are a changin' and I'm not judging the past based on todays standards.
I'm judging actions by the the facts at the given time.

I remember hearing this a few years ago, so my details are a bit fuzzy, but the reason we tell parents to check their children's Halloween candy is because some guy wanted to murder his kids.
My brain was mixing the story up with the Tylenol story because he used a pretty similar method, public distribution of poison through an innocuous object. The guy opened up a pack of pixie-stix (powder candy in a tube) put a bit of poison in each (don't remember what type) and closed them up. When Halloween came around, he gave one of the pixie-stix to his kid and gave the rest out to the trick-or-treaters.
He would have gotten away with it if the police hadn't been able to trace the poison to the pixie-stix and got testimony that they were being distributed at that guy's house. I believe the video I watched was from a certain CZcamsr with the initials S. W. but good luck finding that specific video, it's been a few years.

In Canada there's Jimmy Grant's law, which means in Canada you have to pay for gas before you put it in your car. It came about because a young man named Jimmy Grant was killed trying to stop some people who had taken gas without paying for it and there was concern from pretty much everyone that this might happen again. By the way I didn't mind the new guy he was fine.

The Nirbhya gang -R case shouldve also been included. A tragedy like that was the primary reason why the POCSO act was able to get passed by the legislature in India

The Tylenol poisonings are why I prefer pills and caplets instead of capsules when I buy over-the-counter medications. The capsules can be opened and things put inside. And, I still check to see that the box and container have not been opened or tampered with.

11:50 I read a book on this called “Uprising.” It follows the stories of three girls of different backgrounds and financial status. It’s a tragic story about their experiences in and around the factory. Made me cry.

The Port Arthur massacre inspired the THEN leader of the Australian federal government ( Prime Minister ) John Howard to arrange a gun buyback scheme and have destroyed all the guns that were handed in to local police stations around Australia ( as too the rest of what you mentioned took place as a result ) . ♑️✍️🇳🇴🇦🇺
