- There is a new upgradable modular flagship on the market, and its time for a durability test. Grab your RGB's from GTRacing here: allsha.re/a/46gEQQ4M2ch use Code 'JERRY' for $10 off. This new smartphone comes with a screw driver, cuz FairPhone knows that you don't actually own something unless you can repair it.

RGB improves system performance due to the speed of light, so yeah.
Lol
Yes it does... Wahahaha
More light=more speed

That explains why macbooks aren't for gaming
Lets return to removable backs and easily swappable batteries. This phone is awesome. I would love to see it reviewed by MKBHD. Thanks for the teardown, Zack.
MHKBD would find a way to dismiss this even if it drowned it in a few compliments. He would never give it a fair shot cuz he has such a strong business relationship with Apple and Samsung, and his audience are 90% apple and Samsung users. And none of them want to hear about how they're buying the wrong phones with the wrong features that are terrible for the environment.

@@sweetmelon3365 the pc next to it has many charging ports.
What a scam! You guys are just selling rebranded Alibaba imports, for 3 times the price or even more.
Damn! So many memories back in the days removable back panels existed. I still have a phone with one of those. I'm impressed with what fairphone has done here. Definitely appreciate the right-to-repair support coming from an enthusiast perspective :)))
Yes I remember the iPhone 4 had a glass back but you could replace the back and the battery without touching the screen
I've never thought I'd see a removable back and battery again in 2021... 👀 Brings back good memories
And modules you can unscrew and replace if a charge port, camera module or screen breaks.
Galaxy XCover 5 has removable battery. But honestly I don't see any reason to buy a phone with removable back and battery because battery lasts for at least 3 years. In my case battery of my previous phone lasted for 4 years and it was still usable, I was getting 4-5 hours of SOT, and then it was replaced before giving it to another person. Spending 30-40 euro to replace the battery once for 3-4 years is not a lot.
@@justdude8115 "I don't see any reason to buy a phone with removable back and battery because battery lasts for at least 3 years" - How about instant full charge? (swapping batteries)

Bravo! I would definitely take sustainable and repairable over flashy. Thanks for bringing attention to this company.
I would love to see more of these. I appreciate that GTracing has a consensus from multiple body types!
It's refreshing to see a company not base their flahships solely on the probability of profit
So go buy one then.
Yeah even though we hate on apple (which they mostly deserve) all the once loves easy fixed brands are going downhill
It's trying to be so environmentally friendly that it's actually made of old parts stock that other companies didn't manage to sell. I thought this was a $100-150 phone but it actually costs $650. Even apple has lower margins than this
Don't be so naive. Of course it's for profit. Fairphones are expensive to buy compared to their base hardware price. Everybody's actually making a profit today under the excuse that it's expensive because it's sustainable.
@@simona4294 exactly, for that price you can get a pretty decent spec phone from another company
This phone and a Framework Laptop are the perfect electronics. All extremely repairable modular, durable and modern.
The world needs more of them.
This phone isn't perfect at all - no headphone jack. Which means no sale. Do better next time, fairphone.
@@mjc0961 Alright then what flagship phones do have a headphone jack?
@Zaydan Naufal Yup, they do indeed have one bur they're 500-700 bucks more expensive with a painful battery replacement process. Repairing the phone above is as easy as walking, whereas the one you mentioned is like hiking up Mt Everest.
Yeah I'll most definitely have both as my daily driver in 2-3 years whatever their lineup holds by then.
Shift Phone is another modular phone. Hopefully they introduce an NA-compatible model. Teracube is another good sustainable option, but I hope they make their phones fully modular too.
@@rollerskdude oh boy guess how much is for the fairphone💀
Truly great getting to see looking back leading to forward thinking
Hey Jerry, the way you're spicing up things in the end of 2021, now here comes a phone whereby the teardown is the first before the durability test, good job Jerry 💓
Zack:"This has definitely been the easiest battery replacement of 2021"
Pixel:"Noooo 😭"
Screen replacement lmao
USB-C port replacement even :D
Poor pixel
Interesting for sure. I hope they use that chassis as an upgrade path though. I love the idea here but would be nice to say buy an upgraded camera piece in a few years if some cool tech improvements happen. Or swap a main board upgrade if you need more processing power but the camera and the rest is less important. Maybe you want an OLED screen in a few years but happy with the rest etc... Basically I want a ATX like standard for mobile phone upgrades if fair does it and sells in the US then I'll take 5, one for me, the wife, and each kid.
That would be extremely awesome but it's not gonna happen simply because that is not a sustainable business model, others have tried this and failed. And unless mainstream OEMs like Apple, Samsung and others won't make their phones repairable like Fairphone does, this will unfortunately remain a niche category and will probably die.
They are litteraly doing that XD you can upgrade your phone if, a new version comes out.
@@Hatchi19008 have they said they will keep to the chassis and motherboard layout? If so awesome. I know they will make new models with upgrades just assumed different chassis, camera layout etc. Vs buying a new module only to snap in this one for what you want.
This should be the future. Just like gaming computers that you can easily swap with an upgrade, phones should be like this and you build the components based on your budget! And it should be easily installed just like placing legos.
@@g00fysmiley They said, for example if a new version comes out with a better camera etc, you can wap it out. but idk if its only like the next version or if you can swap the next 4 versions out too.
1st time you make a phone teardown and then durability test .
Nice work Jerry . ❤️❤️
First time i was actually interested in sponsored message and did not skip the intro. Keep it up!
I like the idea of reducing E-waste by having a phone that can be upgraded over time, as opposed to upgrading to a new phone and chucking the last one.
Kudos to this company.
they also have a system for sending in old smartphones for a giftcard for their store
The second you opened the back panel, my heart skipped a beat. The nostalgia...
Love your videos. You take an idea and go above and beyond with it. You give me tons of information and in-depth tests. Super useful! I think I will order a chair from them.
Solid and Sustainable! thanks for this video!
What a nice flashback to changing the battery so easily. I honestly hope this will be the standard in the future as it should have always been.
As a tech enthusiast, who is fed up with the flashy hard to repair, overpriced stuff, I'd love to see a fairphone with high end components, that won't cost a gazillion. I think it'll be unbeatable
Phones are hard to repair because of water resistance
Any phone with high end components, while remaining below that high-end price will be unbeatable in most ways. What I would love is.. Well, basically this phone. Having major updates for more than 2 years is the thing that really sells it to me.
@@jeffgayzose8129 Bullshit. Stop defending corporate greed. There are tons of midrange phones that are NOT water resistant and is very complex to repair/replace.
@@ChiekoGamers my statement still stands. Modern phones are hard to repair because of the adhesive that holds the back glass on and makes it water resistant. Screens are hard to replace because of how thin and fragile oled panels are. Sorry that I hurt your fragile feelings with the truth.
@@jeffgayzose8129 So all budget and midrange phones are water resistant?

This is amazing.. such a lovely approach by the company
I really like the idea of this phone and I hope it comes comes the US. I miss the days of removable batteries and being able to swap to a freshly charged one quickly, and easy repairs. Definitely my kind of device.
If you can find a way to import it from the EU it actually has the band support to work with T-Mobile 5G and pretty much every carrier in Canada & Mexico as well. 👌
I could help you to Import it into the USA and also there is a company importing them. But duties and taxes will be added to the price and you'll end up paying about 700$
Following this company with interest, great to see they have another phone on the market. Love the concept.
Love that Burls Art Guitar!
I’m mesmerised by the quality of your videos, aswell as the consistency. They’ve become comfort videos for me now.
I would have loved to see a headphone jack on this phone. Fairphone's goals of making a repairable smartphone are awesome, but I do feel the Fairphone 4 is expensive for what it offers both from a hardware and a design point of view. The replaceable battery along with an easy to take off screen are great to have and should be done by all phones makers. I do love that it passed the fire test :)).
Im okay with the price, given that it will easily outlast my S10, which currently has a broken screen (200$ repair) and an aging battery (60$ repair + back glass replacement). The Fairphone was a wake up call for me, it made me realize just how important cheap and quick repairs are for me.
You don't only buy the hardware. You also buy the reparability, solidity, the warrantee and modularity. After 10 years owning this fairphone should be cheaper than owning any other phone.
Now that said, you can today buy a refurbished phone, and later a fairphone. When you buy a refurbished phone, at least you don't buy a complete new phone that would be adding electronic waste on the planet.
The higher price is because they are paying fair wages to everyone involved in manufacturing of this phone. If you ask me that's a fair price for what they offer and do for environment and everyone else.
You pay more for better treatment of miners and workers in factories and for ethically sourced materials.
It's the camera notch that put me off the FP4. Headphone jack would be nice but i now have BT headphones...
But that notch, that'd drive me insane.
I'll stick with my FP3 and hope the next version doesn't repeat that abomination :)
Even your in video shoutouts and sponsor advertising seems soothing and not at all disruptive.
Thank you a lot for bringing this durability test!! I was waiting for it since the Fairphone 4 5G launch date!
If it has survived the JRE's test, it will surely last a lot more than the 5 years of warranty
This is a super sick phone, altho, i wouldnt really call it a flagship, its just a midrange phone, its sad to see how small manufacturers have issues with competing in price
Agreed
It's the flagship for this type of phone though. Try finding a higher spec one which has all the same attributes. Fact is, there's exploitation and child labour, dodgy business practices and environmental pollution in all these flagship phones you talk about.
They're using the best technology than can here. The dodgy business practices of qualcomm stops them getting anything faster.
i'm down to buy this if they just made the top and bottom bezels a bit thinner. i'm fine with the screen being IPS, actually i'd prefer IPS because of the ghosting issues on OLED screens.
@@vuxluongw IPS can have image retention issues. LG phones were notorious for this once upon a time (the V20 was a particularly bad offender).
It ain't the problem that fairphone is a small company. The idee of fairphone is making fair phones (therefore the name) . To make fair phone you can't hire children to make some parts of a phone, like many other brands do. So they need to hire an adult with good and legal wage. And therefore the prices of the fairphones are higher.
This should be the future of phones. Just like gaming computer where you can upgrade any component depending on your budget and liking. It should be easily installed like placing legos. And each component should follow universal port just like usb versions and stuff. This idea always happens but sadly dies off easily. Because people love the stereotype flagship phones that you need to replace every year or two, expensive and it even cost you your kidneys lmao
Software is mostly responsible in phones! Not hardware
it was the past dude
Who says you need to replace flagship phones every year or two? That’s total bs. Maybe if you treat your phone like trash. Modular phones are difficult to make because they lack wanted features like waterproofing and are bulkier

I am buying it. I was waiting a long time for this. Thank you Jerry. Thank you a lot. I see you around :-)
Love the concept. I just wish the phone had more competitive specs when it came to camera and processor.
This could be a really great idea. You could upgrade the hardware over time, such as the cameras, to match the latest tech advances and maybe get a discount on the new hardware - part exchange your old hardware for a newer, more enhanced version. That way there's even less waste and the old hardware can be reused or recycled.
From an engineering perspective, that's very unlikely.
I was on their website and saw their wireless earbuds. I'm not sure if they allow users to repair that which honestly it would have been great if users could. Maybe in a future model
i was looking to get one of these when i am done with my lg velvet and was very sad to find out it is only available in europe i love the concept of this device. thanks for upload
Bought a Fairphone 3 about a year ago. Spilled water in the charging module by accident a few months back, leaving me with a phone where, left unused, it would take 24hrs to fully charge. I spent £18 on a new charging module that arrived from Fairphone in less than a week, and hey presto, it's good as new. I talk, a little flippantly, about this handset being the last smartphone I'll ever buy. Bearing in mind the Fairphone 2 (now 6 years old) was recently upgraded to Android 10, that might not be so aspirational as I originally thought. I work in sustainability, so having a smartphone that ticks so many boxes in line with those values is just amazing.
I prefer solid & sustainable. Software bugs are my biggest issue though lately. Phones made from quality materials & proven parts are still bricks if the manufacturer isn't clicked up with your carrier.
