Yes, Ronnie Van Zant was the lead singer and he, along with the lead guitar player Steve Gaines and his sister, back up singer Cassie Gaines, their road manager and the two pilots were killed on Oct. 20, 1977. The other members lived. Ronnie's brother Johnnie Van Zant took over as lead singer.

I was introduced to Skynyrds music at about 10 years old(and this was in 1999 or 2000). Been a fan ever since that day. Of course, being that I grew up in the same neighborhood as the Van Zant's(decades later) makes their music and stories that much better for me. When I listen to my grandmother talk about going to school with them, and at one point dating Ronnie, it makes me smile and feel nostalgic for a time I wasn't even alive to experience.

In 1975 when l was in college, l heard Sweet Home Alabama on the radio just before summer break and thought, gee they sound really good. When l got home l found out Rod Sterwart and Faces were near the end of tour with Ronnie Woods already playing with Stones and last time with Faces. There were 3 bands, Rod last, Tens Years after 2nd and this band named Lynyrd Skynyrd first. Well l only heard the one song and had no idea what other songs they had to play. Well, can you imagine my experience listening for first time, and live to boot?!! Blew us away along with 30,000 other people there, so much l was emotionally drained and 100 percent satisfied l didn't care if the Beatles were next. By the way, the ticket was $7.50. Well, Allie Sherlock has done the same to me. She's only 15 with the most incredible voice your ears can hear, just fantastic, a total package, watch a star grow before your eyes and ears!. She's an Irish Busker with a little celtic. Definitely check her out!!

It took me many years to be able to listen to this band without crying. My mom and step dad died coming home from their concert in 2006. I would ask my ex husband if he would take me to get closure. He’d laugh in my face and told me I was stupid as hell. Hence he’s an ex. I asked my current husband if he could take me, I explained why..there wasn’t a laugh. There was a “we need to go”. Low and behold they came to Tampa a day after my birthday. I cried the whole time, but damn was it worth it. I can finally listen to them again and smile and remember the memories their music made while my mom was still here. Their lyrics are magic. Instruments playing are a part of history. I hope you go down the rabbit hole and enjoy it. 💜

years ago i was at a bar in the middle of nowhere Wisconsin near the border. I played this song in a jokebox and was walking back to the pooltables and this little kid asked his mom what the music was. She said 'some kinda headbanger music' o,O Ah, the backwoods are a scary place. The culture shock those poor people would experience during a day in my world.

The plane crash was 43 years ago on Oct 20th. They left from my hometown, Greenville SC. There were known engine issues- according to survivors (see also the infamous 'Street Survivors' album cover with removed flames) Ronnie Van Zant insisted they use the plane to make the next gig, saying "If it's your time to go, it's your time to go". The fact that there isn't a historical marker or at least a memorial plaque infuriates me. RIP.

Any music from the decade of the 1970’s.......what a rabbit hole to crawl down. Lynyrd skynyrd, The Bee Gees, Pink Floyd, bad company, queen, Fleetwood Mac, James Taylor, the eagles.... and on and on......I feel safe in saying we will never see this much musical diversity and pure talent again......thank you for reminding me just how great this music is.

Ronnie Van Zant, I will miss you until the day I die!! Billy Powell is the most underrated piano player in rock. Lynryd Skynyrd 4 life! Glad you like this band, Mr. Video. You'd be surprised at how fast they came up with these songs. Ronnie was a master at lyrics and coming up with them fast. Yeah, you can tell I'm sorta a L.S. fanatic. Hope everyone had a great holiday.

Billy Powell gets no love because there were three bangin guitarists-but like Benmont Tench in the Heartbreakers or Clarence Clemons in E Street, he’s the gem that makes the difference from very good band to legendary. He just adds the chef’s kiss you need. His solo in Call Me the Breeze is SMOKIN, from the studio version to any number of live jams at it. He’s killer.

Great reaction. I believe this is my favorite song by them. I love all their songs, but sometimes I'm just not in the mood for Free Bird, or Sweet Home Alabama, or Call Me the Breeze, or any of their others, but I'm ALWAYS in the mood for Tuesday's Gone. It's smooth, slow, helps me relax, has those great piano, strings, and guitar solos, but still in places seems fast while going slow. Thanks.

Eargasm is the word you are looking for to describe the piano solo. Now jazz it up a little and play, 'Call Me the Breeze.' That should make you happy. And just keep you going, Johnny Taylor has a song called 'Disco Lady' from his album called Eargasm. You shouldn't have any problem figuring out the meaning of that song. The biggest hit of his career and disco classic. Go ahead, young man. Go ahead!!!

When I was a high school freshman, my Algebra class desk had the name Lynyrd Skynyrd carved into it. I knew the name, but really nothing else. By the time I was a high school junior (after the plane crash in 1977), “Free Bird” was played at least three times at every high school dance. The year after I graduated, the following summer, August of 1980, I saw Rossington Collins Band (pretty much the survivors of the Skynyrd crash) at Roseland in New York City. They finished the show with “Free Bird” without a vocalist in respect for Ronnie Van Zant. It was truly one of the most emotional moments of my life. 😢 Lynyrd Skynyrd was special. 💜

They sang Free Bird, you really liked it. My sister knew some friends of theirs in Memphis. Steve and Cassie Gaines came to
Memphis and got together with all the musicians in town at a bar across the street from my house by Memphis state. They locked us in the bar all night till 6am. They played and sang all night. Great time. Cassie was a back up singer and Steve was a guitar player and singer. They were so sweet. This was late 70's. We walked out the bar together At 6am on a Tuesday morning.
Hugged each other and planned on getting together the next time they came thru town. Well their plane went down on
Thursday , 2 days later, in swampland in MS. Steve , Cassie, and Lead singer Ronnie Van Zant died in the crash. Needless to say it still hurts 50 yrs later. They were great people. I never met Ronnie. You just never know about life. Crazy.

Have to agree with you my friend about the piano solo. Billy Powell was a classically trained pianist so any time he plays it is a beautiful piece. Billy was the bands roadie until Ronnie walked in one day to hear Billy playing his take on Freebird on the piano. Billy was immediately hired.
