- Need more internal storage on your Xbox One? Internal drive failure keeping the console from booting up? Or maybe you just want to install a SSD in there for fun? Regardless the reason, this guide will show you how to take a 2.5" SATA drive and set it up for your Xbox One, Xbox One S, or Xbox One X internally! This exact tutorial will be using the Xbox One X as a demonstration, however the original Xbox One and the Xbox One S have the same software steps as shown here. This will also only walk through setup and initialization like a brand new console, so retaining any data from an old drive will be up to you if you choose to adapt this tutorial to your situation.

Holyshit an articulate CZcamsr who takes his time and doesn't throw all his words together and doesn't trip over his words and have to retract statements I am in shock and I will continue to watch this video to the end for I feel there has to be pertinent and useful information here cuz this guy is no dummy , you got yourself another subscriber !
Well thanks for the kind words 🤗
I was spot on , the video was perfect and went off without a hitch. Thanks so much

Everytime I want to modify anything gaming related, I search your channel first. Only your tutorials work for me. Well, maybe I shouldn't say that, I'll say yours make it easy and the most sense to me. Especially since at every turn you also say what we'll see if something goes wrong. Every other tutorial just assumed every goes according to plan. Thank you for all your hard work
Thanks, dude!
Man I can't even begin to explain how much your videos have been helping me these past few weeks. Thank you
My Xbox has an issue with the last update. I upgraded my HHD for the SSD as you recommended + following your steps, I was able to reinstall everything and continue playing using my old Xbox. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE EASY EXPLANATION 🙂
This worked perfectly thank you!! My HDD failed and wouldn't install anything/crashed the computer all sorts. Followed this step by step and all good!
Whoo, that is quite an undertaking. Not impossible, but rather involved...
I will say, MM, that your past tutorials on the very first Xbox have been immensely helpful. I've got a 500GB drive in my Xbox, nicked from an iMac, and although boot times have increased, the extra storage is worth the wait. Pretty much anything I want on the drive will fit. Thanks much for that!
Im playing xbox og off my usb hdd.
2023 and it still works big thanks to you bro you really help me a lot ❤
Glad to hear that!
Did this last summer, its a really nice upgrade!
Thank you for going over every single step. Much appreciated!
This is amazing how easy the upgrade is! Much better than the original Xbox that locked the hard drive to the motherboard unless you softmodded it first.
Having upgraded a PS4 before an Xbox One, this was so much worse holy fuck.
@@SimisFul It's all relative. I recently upgraded the drive in my classic Xbox, and agree with PiratesMVP that it's no picnic. Holy hotswaps, Batman!
@@jessragan6714 I certainly don't envy it if that's the case! Hopefully you got it all working now :)
Up and running in my upgraded SSD. Thank you!
Hard drive went bad in my sons Xbox One X and I needed to do something about it. I got a new SSD and used this tutorial and got it back up running, thanks!
You're welcome!
Thank you for such a detailed tutorial. I upgraded my Xbox one X with Samsung 870 EVO 1TB 2 years ago, then did another upgrade to 2 TB last year. What i can say is every dollar is worth of it ! The price of SSD has been going down to a quite resonable range and people with old consoles should consider the internal upgrade first if he or she has the ability to dissamble the console. However, what modders concern is the maximum capacity or limitation of the Xbox One consoles. I have viewed several videos made by XFiX(aka author of Xbox HDD master script). He said the limitation of user content partition is around 1.8TB or so. In other words the max standard capacity of SSD would be 2TB. Though we can partition the SSD of greater capacity and get beyond the limitation with Xbox HDD master script tool, we cannot use it because once trying ,it causes partition corruption and data lost. I just bought another new 4TB 870 EVO last week and this information interrupted my plan because I was just aware of it yesterday.
Thanks MrMario2011. Was waiting for you to do a video on this!
I so happy that someone has made a full in depth tutorial on this but wish there was some help if nothing works on the OSU1 update.

Worked great! But before getting to that part I was one of the sad users with the insider program so basically, I just waited till today to download the new OSU that overpassed the last software update for insider users. I had my Xbox bricked for one month lol. Thanks again! Great video!

@@MrMario2011 I have a laptop and there's hardly anything on it I just bought it a couple weeks ago, I connected a 1TB hard drive to the PC and I'm at about the 9 minute mark of the video but I'm not sure which is hard drive I have connected with the sata to usb cable it show at the bottom of disk management "disk 0 basic 119.23 GB online and below that CD-ROM 0 DVD (E)" I'm assuming the hard drive is the (E) at the bottom?
Today I went to my brother's place. And I took my laptop.
I watched your video and i had all the stuffs prepared.
He's Xbox one s hhd was failing.. sometimes the console would freeze while playing a game. Because the HDD would stop.
I bought him a western digital SSD 1to.
And followed your video very strictly.

you can actually move the unallocated partition at the end of the partition table to the right of the largest one and extend it to it, that's what i did to mine, but i want to mention that I first clonezilla-ed my original hdd (500gb) to the ssd
I was fighting with an Xbox black screen for a friend. I couldn't get it to boot into troubleshoot menu to reload it. I knew it wasn't bricked since it got to the green screen and went black plus the controller allowed me to power down, restart, etc. It had to be corruption since it happened after that MS update that killed a lot of Xbox units. He wasn't worried about the data since it's all on the cloud. I said I'll replace the HDD with an SSD after coming across you method for replacing/upgrading the disk. I worked without any issues and was able to apply the update and it's good to go. I spent way less time on this than trying to get into the troubleshooting menu. He's finally got his Xbox back after it being hosed for 6 months. I appreciate the information and tips. Easy to follow and not difficult at all.
Did you use the original drive? Jw wondering because mine crashed mid update (Xbox one x) now it turns on but shuts off after like 5 mins no power to USB and says no signal
Yes, I did put an SSD in it which sped it up some. You can remove the original drive and attach to a USB port if you have an SSD to USB adapter and run diagnostics. If it's good, just follow the video and you should be good to go. If the drive is bad, just get another one since they're fairly cheap now. It's not difficult to do. I just find it easy since I was an IT Engineer for over 2 decades. I get something that may be easy for me may not be for others. I did find this resolution to be straightforward. @@stoneywardog

Great Video. Quick tip for you. In Windows Explorer if you want to drop to a command prompt for the folder you have open, just type CMD in the explorer path bar.

was able to upgrade my 1X to 2TB SSD with no struggle but will wait for the update to fix the boot animation since xbox releases update every month
Mine crashed few times was able to osu update crashed few weeks later again won’t take the update now. ... little bit upset but I bought this console used ... time to fix it. Thanks for the guide 💯 navigating through Spotify and CZcams crashed it.
Just be careful removing the ribbon that connects the front USB and sync button from the board. When I did mine, it ripped the connector off the motherboard. Luckily the damage wasn't too bad, and a repair shop could was able to fix it. But if you're not careful, those traces may be irreparable.
Hi,I think it happened to me today. I tried two USB,none is recognized anymore and I can't do an offline system update. It remains grayed out. What can I do?
For those getting an E106xxxxx error code loading the OSU1, make sure you download the proper version for your Xbox One console. There's a separate version for Xbox One X/One S and Xbox One consoles. I accidentally tried to load the Xbox One S OSU1 onto an Xbox One and ran into a E106xxxx error and Update from USB was not an option in the trouble shooter. Also try a different USB drive. Some drives have issues loading the OSU1 onto the console.
Halo 5 Xbox One
Previous Drive: Seagate ST1000LM024 1TB HDD
New Drive: Crucial MX500 1TB SSD
Console OS before Upgrade: 10.0.22621.4480
Also make sure to exit the Xbox Insider program if you have a preview release of the OS. The public OSU1 will not work. You'll have to wait until the new public release of the OSU1 supercedes the Insider preview version. That can take months. You cannot revert to an older OS build doing the offline update by USB using the lastest OSU1 update in this situation. It would suck if your HDD crashed with a preview build.
10:09 you can also type “cmd” in the address bar to open command prompt to that directory
I did this nearly a year ago with my One X and PS4 and I can’t recommend it enough
Why?
@@user-lj4lo7cx7m performance increase
"I can't recommend it enough"
@@user-lj4lo7cx7m Well SSD's tend to last longer than standard hard drives, and the PS4 menu has a considerable decrease in lag
And faster texture pop in in some games
A SSD (MX500 1TB) brought new life in my PS4 Slim. It's just snappier and textures in many games load faster. Or the share menue appears nearly immediatelly, with a HDD it just took ages to load
Thank you so much much appreciated.
Thank you so very much!
Terrific video! Also I saw another video where you can merge the unallocated space with Aomei Partition assistant to gain it back. Also once it's all do I just have to sign in and re-download all my games I'm guessing? my HDD is completely toast
worked like a dream !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Glad it helped!
I have a question, if you wanted to transfer everything from your old hard drive to a new one, could you just use Macrium Reflect to copy everything from the old hard drive into the new and just put it install it back on the Xbox?
Wow this is outdated. You don't need to hook any of the drives up to the PC anymore, let alone mess with weird scripts. Throw the new/larger HDD/SSD into the console (no prep needed), go to the recovery menu (as outlined at 23:30) with the OSU1 USB stick inserted and pick the offline system update menu item. It'll start doing its thing. Done. The only thing this *doesn't* do is restore the boot logo, but that'll fix itself the next time there's a software update anyway and doesn't affect usability
Hey there, when was the most recent time you've done this procedure? I have been trying the OSU update and it seems to fail every single time across multiple drives and multiple devices.
Great vid. Quick question, is there any reason we can't just take the old hard drive out and clone the entire thing using Arconis or Marcium reflect using a USB-to-SATA connector to a new drive directly?
This guy should have more subs!
I have way, way, way, WAY more than I ever anticipated or expected. More than enough, I just want the info out there, anything else that comes alongside it is a bonus 😁
Sorry to both you, twice, thanks for a great video, but, after redoing the whole process a few times mine does exactly what you showed, until I get to the offline update, it goes to the something went wrong screen with the E101 error, and I can pretty much bounce back and forth between a good start with E106, to the E101 error. Do you have any suggestions?
i believe error 101 is a faulty hdd
Great tutorial! Can you follow these steps without the iFixit Pro Tech Toolkit, or are there special tools that are needed? I take it the screws are not all Phillips head.
The toolkit doesn't have anything proprietary for the Xbox, best to watch the video or check out another teardown to see what you'll need for your system.
Awesome thank you
For those wanting to put odd sized drives in, it is just easier to hand make the partitions yourself leaving the user content partition til last to use up the max free unallocated space. The scripts out there are damned good but only cover 500/1tb/2tb options which doesn't cover say 750gb size or rather it does but you lose a fair sized chunk as unallocated and unusable. Just note the file structure, set the System Update up around 15-20gb as the OSU1 has grown since the scripts creation and make sure to set the drive letters appropriately. You can self set up your Xbox hdd very quickly that way.
The 500 GB / 1 TB / 2 TB limits are there as that's not only what Microsoft officially supported, but there's been issues down the line with odd sized drives.
BTW MrMario, you don't have to take off the black circular screws to take the hard drive out on most Xbox One S/X caddies. just unscrewing the corner ones comes off fine
hi great video thanks. one question does the SSD have to be a high-performance drive? or can i just use a standard speed one 560gb/s
The Xbox One is limited to SATA II, sadly, so getting the latest and greatest SSD won't benefit you.
One X has sata 3, if that's what you have. Use a standard one.
Hi. I just watched another video before this one where the guy didn't do any formatting on the drive, before setting it up. My question is: Is this still necessary or is it 'now' possible to just go ahead and replace it without doing any preparations at all, and the console will do the rest?.
You still need the OSU1 USB stick, but none of the script crap is necessary anymore. Replace original drive with new one without prep, boot into the troubleshoot menu (as outlined at 23:30) with the OSU1 USB stick inserted, and pick the Offline System Update menu entry and wait 10 minutes or so. Done
Hey! Great tutorial, at 12:22 I'm stuck as it doesn't seem like anything is loading and a green screen appears with less writing, I checked the drive and there seems to be no partitions installed, any advice please?
i see people doing the upgrade SSD and just installing the new SSD and then doing offline update... do we still have to do the same way u did it ur not?? thanks
My one x is starting to slow down. This will definitely help it keep up when I get an ssd. Any recommendations on what size ssd I should get?
1 TB if you want to keep it all the same, 2 TB if you'd like that extra boost of internal storage size.
I had a problem, a few weeks ago, with my Xbox One. At some point it showed the famous black screen. The only thing that was showing on the screen was that interface from when you want to turn off console from controller. Those three buttons. Those, showed up on screen. Nothing else.
So I figured it has to be the HDD.
I removed the HDD and insert into my laptop as external. Windows 10 said that there is something wrong with that disc and needs to repair it.
I said OK to that. That's all I didi at that point and I placed the HDD back in the console but the problem was still there. Black screen.
So I did what you said in this tutorial but with the same HDD and all seemed fine until Step 2 verifying got to around 96%.
The console stopped.
Initially I thought it will restart (because of the on-screen message that the console will restart during update). But it didn't restart. It just stopped and as I started it again, manually from the power button, it started the process from the beginning. The second time I tried it, it stopped again.
No error, no nothing.
You think the problem is the HDD?
I am very keen on buying an SSD, a 1TB one, as the current HDD is 500GB. It would be a great improvement.
But I want, if possible, to be sure that the problem comes from HDD and not from anything else.
Have you seen this problem before?
Thanks.
Hi.
Have an issue whereby it won't boot from memory card to update after unzipping the file
Im using a 64gb micro sd in a usb 3 adapter.
I have formatted sd card to ntfs and everything reset.
Im upgrading to a 2tb sdd.
I even tried cloning the hdd xbox1x 1tb to the 2tb ssd. I tried twice but failed to clone.
I have reset the 2tb drive again formatted etc then retried booting from memory card but still nothing.
Starts to update then at 5% stops!
I then tried putting back my original hdd back in the xbox1x and now that wont read and returns an error....
Help.
I followed your instructions to the letter.
Would ask this question on the GBAtemp forums but wont let me past the cookie banner :(
tried this on an xbox one and could not get the drive to fire up, whether built from PC or via usb the update would not take. So I was wondering, I also have a One S that was way easier to swap over, could I build a new drive in that and transplant to a vanilla Xbox one??
can't believe you can't just put it in and it works. ps3 and ps4 you could use any harddrive and it would just work without messing with a computer and stuff.
Thank you
A couple of questions here:
1. Will replacing the Hard Drive ban Xbox accounts or not (even if it isn't modded at all), as some people online say they don't and some say they do.
2. I saw one of your replies saying that the console only uses SATA II, does SATA III work too because the cheapest 2TB SSD I could find on eBay is a SATA III.
There is always a ban risk, although I've never known of anyone to get banned ONLY for replacing their drive. SATA standards are backwards compatible, you just won't max out drive speeds.
@@MrMario2011 Ah, so the SATA II and SATA III just mean the speeds of the storage device. Nice
Thank you for this. Can you do this in one xbox one and then put the freshly setup drive into another xbox one, or does it need to be done in the xbox it will live in. I ask because I need to do this for a friend who lives across the country.
It must be done in the Xbox it will reside in.
Hi Mario, i am tring to put the Boot Anima but when i connect the hard drive, it does not show in This PC... something i doing wrong?
WOW this was flawless and worked perfectly - upgraded my XBox one from the 500GB stock drive to a 2TB SSD. Great step by step tutorial - Thank you.
This is on a base Xbox One? Did you notice any improvement in speed?
@@dln.sweeney Did it initially on my base XBox one (VCR model) and just a couple of weeks ago, I had to do the same upgrade to my Xbox one X model because the SATA mechanical HDD died - No major significant improvements with load & boot-up speeds I can speak of, maybe shaved a few seconds here and there. There are certainly a few other CZcams videos out there that show you the minimal speed improvements between the stock HDD and an SSD if you’re curious.
@@wetsu7648 Right on, thanks for the info
Wait. I’m confused. I did this by downloading the update from MS directly. Is there an advantage to doing it this way? Vs. Downloading the MS update?
I think the old Xbone still needs to be done by scripts. The Ons S/X I have done just by the update file by itself. Anything more than 1TB needs the scripts though since there aren't any 2TB consoles around.
@@MrCarlosj0 The 1S had multiple 2TB special editions. I have a 1X and am wanting to go to a 2TB myself. Trying to figure out what to do.

Yep, nothing all too special about these in regards to security sectors.
@@MrMario2011 Does the drive cloning method work if they're different sizes though?
@@shanez1215 More than likely it will. Once you clone the drive, the larger hdd should have an empty partition of the remaining space. I usually use AOMEI Partition assistant to combine your main partition for game storage with whatever empty space you have left.
this is exactly what i was thinking of doing lol, glad to know it could work
Quick question: Can't you, after formatting the drive, put the anim file in A & B folders before you install the drive ? just curious
I have a modified original xBox that I had customize YEARS ago (like 15 years ago??) that has a lot of emulated games on it. My son told me it is no longer booting. I have the 200gb drive out and attached to a PC. Windows only reports 98mb being used. Is there a tool I can run on PC to really see the drive contents? From watching your video's it appears Windows won't see actual disk usage. I am trying to recover/clone the old drive, but I am afraid all is lost :( Is there a way to use a new drive to get the 500+ emulated games I had on this old drive. Of course they will be different...just looking for a way to give some life to this original xBox again.
FATXplorer would be the best option.
@@MrMario2011 Thanks for the reply. I tried that tool as well. Soooo strange the drive would simply be empty, as if it was formatted. Sadness kicks in 😮💨😢
Are the hard drives tied to the system? Could I just keep a working drive from one system and copy it's information using this tool onto another hdd and put it into a different xbox one?
I am having trouble with my xbox one x, it just wont launch any games, it runs media apps just fine, but launching games even disc ones like crash 4, or simple arcade ones like feeding frenzy.. the games wont even boot, just a splash screen and it takes you back to the home screen.
I have reset the console, did all of the things like power cycling and changing mac address etc etc etc so my next thought is perhaps the hard drive partitions for games is knackered. It COULD be that the partition for games is corrupted so when it sends the information into the ram, the ram then sends this info and then you get the crash.
Its my only thought as to what the problem could be, it runs at 4k, runs 4k media apps etc, it runs SOME games such as resident evil 4, that one runs fine. So not sure it is a GPU problem.
So watching this now to see if replacing the drive would be a good thing to do to get it working again
Would this make loading times shorter when playing games?
After running the script, my X partition is only 12 gigs, that not large enough for the A and B folder info. Any suggestions?
I followed this video exactly for an Xbox One S but still got an E200 error. Any suggestions?
What’s the biggest hard drive size you can fit internal ? Possible to fit a 5tb ?
2 TB, since that was the biggest size released. You can shove a bigger drive in there, but you can only use 2 TB of it.
I wonder why u cannot immediately install the OSU1 on the drive? Cause first u reset the system, then shut it down and then do the OSU1? Thanks!
My games won’t load after adding a new hard drive. Any suggestions?
Cant we just do offline update using pen drive with osu1, after replacing the hard disk? Is the scripting required?
That’s what I did
@@MrKrimstah is the script mandatory or not?

@@chriswright8074 Depends on what your current drive is. Of you have a 320GB then the most you can go up to is 500GB without RGHing it
But of you mod it the 360 can do up to 2TB
Just buy like a 128 gig version like I did or yeah even 250 gigs is okay if you’re just gonna download so much games but 360 is close to an end of an era in like a year or 2 possibly even 5 years from now.

Will my Xbox Live account or console be banned if I do this?
I've seen a lot of these videos lately, but no mention on whether an Xbox Live account or console will get banned from Xbox Live for doing this.
My Xbox One X's HDD is going out, and I need to know if this is a safe fix, or if I should instead replace my console.
Doing any kind of modification is always at risk of a ban, but at the same time I've never heard of anyone getting banned only for having a replaced hard drive.
The internal hard drive on my Xbox One X is starting to slow down immensely! Before I could launch whatever app from it in just a few seconds but now it takes almost 20-30 seconds to open!
Could anyone explain this to me please,
Using Xbox one s and the past week it got slow nothing loaded so changed hdd partitioned using this guide but still getting error 101 also took the hdd out of a virgin TiVo box which is 1tb and the same happened, im not going believe that 2 hdds have failed one is basically brand new.
Please any help let me know
All you need is a clean freshly formatted ssd or HDD no need to do anything to the drive just fit it and use osu1 on usb job done
good evening the stage on the PC, we have to do it? because I don’t have the hardware to do it:/
Sometimes when I manually install the boot.dat files after the OSU1 install it takes but sometimes it doesn't take. Ever run into this issue? I install it on both A and B folders. I've always had this issue on and off.
Nope, I personally don't put the bootanim on there once I'm done, since it will be restored on the next update.
@@MrMario2011 I only do it because I hate seeing a black screen waiting until it updates next lol
You can force it by enrolling in the Insiders hub. The update in Beta. Then you have your animation back and then unenroll. Your Console will be reset to factory settings though
Shoot I bought a. External SSD. Would this method still work?
