This video was awesome, I had been looking around for help to fix my Grandson's Xbox one S. However, everyone video I found you had to use a script but you had to access to it. This video made it so easy to install a new hard drive. Wonderful Job Andrew Paul Thank you!!!
Awesome tutorial, MS support page says to use OSU 2/3 file on original Xbox one but these gave error when I tried to install them. I thought that I made some mistakes somewhere but it turns out that you need OSU 1 and all is good. Good thing I found this tutorial and resolved my problem.

Error after error never getting past about 7%. I have tried different usb sticks and varying sized drives of over 500GB and I get nothing each time. Anyway, the video was great and it gave me some juice to keep trying for a bit longer until I felt I had done everything. Thanks for the hard work on the video Andy.

Thank you so very much. I had my xbox apart during this process. Just to make sure things went smoothly and to make sure I didn't need to do anything else. Not ideal I know. But it is going through. I did have an E100 error but that was 100% on me because I didn't have the blu-ray player installed in the system. Quick fix and it got past the part I was getting stuck at. Everything worked properly. I had a little snag when I was trying to get the boot animation. I had to add a letter to the partition to access the files. I was able to put the files in and now have the boot animation. After all of that my xbox is running just fine and is put back together with a new 1TB SSD. I have to reinstall all of my games, which isn't an issue since I mainly play on PC, but there are a few games not on PC that are on Xbox (MLB The Show) I noticed an immediate improvement of download speed. I spent hours trying to clone my drive and it wasn't working, I was getting frustrated. I'm glad there was another way to get it done. I know I could've spent money on a new series X. But a 1TB SSD is a lot cheaper.
MAKE SURE YOUR BLU-RAY is CONNECTED!!! I chased this around for hours because I was only plugging the hard drive into the opened up system and trying to restore from there. I kept getting to the verification 100% and then E100 error. Plugged in the blu-ray and boom. Done!
Thanks for the video, I had been going round in circles with E101 / E106 errors and my xbox, the instructions on xbox website are garbage! I bought it used, it had been factory reset, but it seems that does not get rid of the xbox insider os, the hard drive died and now it's a brick until the next osu1 update!
update: I did everything I needed to do by formatting and doing the offline update. although I have the oldest Xbox, the OSU1 update worked for me for some reason which I still don't understand. however, it worked. I bought a 2 Terabyte SSD, it's the Samsung QVO which is pretty good. Xbox feels brand new. thanks.
I appreciate it, I had trouble at first but I had to format my hdd to ntsf and it finally recognized the hard drive so I could update it with a usb, I was starting to worry. I used a seagate barracuda 2tb, now I won’t have a slow ass Xbox one, woohoo.
Your xbox doesn’t get to the third bip? Same thing happened to me it was because of the usb flash drive format, make sure you format it to NTFS but more important in the part in the Allocation Unit Size select the first one in the list is named “Default”. I worked for me. Good luck!!
So basically what you said at 18:50 is allowing the Xbox to sleep on it’s own with power-save mode corrupts the hdd faster? Or is that with instant start up? Is it better to shut it down through the controller or the settings..? And does leaving the Xbox on for hours on the home screen eventually corrupt it too? (My brother always did that to the point where the Xbox stopped turning on.). Ordered a 1tb Seagate HDD from Amazon and it comes tomorrow, I already have my USB set up with the OSU1 and bootup animation, and my Xbox is already taken apart and ready to go for tomorrow lol. I’ll update here if it works! Update: It worked!! Thank you! Even though I put the boot-up animation in the $SystemUpdate file, I have no boot-up animation lol, but I’ll wait and see if it fixes itself. Will update if it does. Update: After about 3 days of turning my Xbox on without the bootup animation, it fixed itself! Now my happiness is complete 🥲
hi andrew you only need to press and hold the bind button while powering up. the eject actually does nothing and is a myth. give it a go and you'll see what I mean. great work by the way 👍
Thank you for this detailed video. When my HDD died I followed this exactly and got my Xbox back up and running. The only issue I have is that my online games will not connect to the games servers. I can play games fine offline and all my apps (Netflix, CZcams etc) connect to the internet and work fine. I just can’t play online games. It was working fine before the original HDD gave up and I have the same router and ISP. Any ideas what is wrong?
Dec 9th 2022 as of writing this comment. My Fat XONE HDD died and started making clicking noises. Error 101 and 102. Didnt want the hassle of sending it to MS or taking it to some shady repair place. I had a spare 1GB external drive around. Followed this guide and now it works like a charm. Thank you so much! Its a PITA to open the damn thing tho.
The boot animation files were added to the OSU, so they were not part of the installation, hence not copied. Was there any file that you could edit for the installer to read them too? Thnx!
Thank you for your tutorial. I've followed it to the letter twice now. It works, I get into setting up the Xbox one x, I sign in, I do all my settings, time, language, it updates the store etc. After all that, on the very next restart, it goes back to E error 102,105 or 106. Is it a sign of a faulty hdd? It's barely a year old 1tb sata. Please advise at your earliest convenience.
I have done the SSD upgrade to my XBOX ONE S awhile ago. I used the OSU1 that mentioned in Xbox Support website. And I didn't do any formatting to the SSD. I just wrap it with the old hard drive, then do the Offline System Update. The Xbox will guide you all the process (to a fresh factory-reset console). For the game-save, as long as you install the game thereafter (Or find it back in the store app), the game-save will be back there...... those Xbox Backup doesn't help! My 2 cents.
If anyones got a boot loop and your hard drives healthy. In my experience, it's the sata connection cables attached for the hard drive. Can't remember the error codes specifically. But, ive repaired 3 consoles this year with that very issue. Xbox 360 sata cables will fit, Xbox one, one s, and one X are crosscompatiable using them cables.
Hello! this is my tip for change the HDD.. I was try in 4 or 5 Xbox One tring with diferent brand of hdd (Toshiba, Seagate and others) and all give me error 0100 .. 0101.. the only brand that i can do the change was WESTERN DIGITAL. just put this brand and VOILA! (Sorry my english)
Thanks man I was having a little of trouble I have a 1 terabyte ssd and I tired to put it in the Xbox but it didn’t work so I took out the hard drive from my ps4 and that worked perfectly I don’t no what’s wrong with my ssd it’s pretty much brand new
Try running a clean command via diskpart in Windows and retry with the SSD. Might also be worth checking for and available firmware updates for the disk while you have it hooked up to the PC.
Hello, great video, helped me so much, I wanted to ask for some help as I replaced the HDD because of a gut feeling and it started working again. For some reason after a couple of weeks it's has now stopped working, looks like before, it powers on but it's doesn't display video. The HDD I used to replace was brand new. Any idea? I'm just sad because I played some games and everything was working fine
HI THERE I HAVE REAL PROBLEM HERE. THE NEW UPDATE VERSION IS 6.14GB WHEN THE (X UPDATE PARTITION HAS ONLY 11.99GB ) giving error that need more 180mb space? do you have new partition script because old gonna make the same 11.99gb ??
I tried to upgrade my hdd. The thing is the eject button turns on the xbox. I cant hold sync, eject and then press power. Why does my xbox power on with the eject button? It is phat xbox one 500gb. The xbox now has beep on, 5 seconds then beep off issue.
I still got error message during offiline update "E101 00000504 8B050041" and cannot proceed. I try to replace samsung 870 qvo ssd for my Xbox X. Also, I got not enough space for A & B in System Update (X:) partition due to large size of the OSU1
Im beginning to wonder if the thing where the console creates the partitions is something that microsoft added to the firmware as a result of the next gen consoles using non standard SSDs (which is modular, fortunatly, unlike the PS5 where it is soldered to the board), especially if the now previous gen and the next gen use pretty much the same firmware I must have had that thought in my head for at least the last 24 hours or so
Having the same thought right now. My one x lasted barely a year and a half and there is people I know with 7 years on a box. This is fucking bullshit.
thank you for the new update tutorial. I have Emailed on 27/04/2021 you about a problem I get with the older tutorial as my system crashes at the start of stage 2 I will try this new one
Two questions - 1. When we do the three beep technique after getting a new hard drive, will we hear the Xbox chime even if we turned that off on the old drive? 2. Why can we not just simply press the power button to turn the Xbox on?
Is this tutorial still relevant? And also did you intentionally kept the LAN cable disconnected during the installation? It has to be pure offline? What if i reset the console before the offline update and before putting the new drive? The OSU1 file will be newer than the factory defaults if i am thinking right. Wouldnt that decrease the chance of the update getting corrupt?
hello, i got a new problem with the last tuto. i made it several times on different Xbox but i can't instal new hdd with the last OS of this summer, it is to heavy (6.1go). when i do 6go for A and 6go for B the System Update X volum is to small (12go). i tied to extend the volum but it is not working. i tried to find the lastest script but problem is still here. how to do ??
Thank you, super helpful! New HD straight out the box, OSU1 and voila, XBOX live again ;-) NB, I think the OSU package is 6.53GB so ensure you have a USB with enough space
Now that Microsoft have made the process easier, I’m kind of tempted to swap the 1TB HDD in my Xbox One X for a 2TB SSD (although once i finally get an Xbox Series X, my Xbox One X won’t see as much use)
I am in the process of doing the ssd swap. I have replaced the drive and put console back together and now I just keep getting error codes. And it will not accept the osu1.
Computer tech here. Was working on a system that came into shop, and tried every software fix, and pulled drive out like a computer and determined it was failing. Once a new drive was installed, system allowed itself to be updated and used.
Hi Paul great video. Run into problems trying this now as the system update file is to big for the partition. I installed into file A onto system update (x:) this partition is 11.9gb the file placed into file A is 6.61 GB so when I copy this to file B it is to big. I did try your new video and had no luck so thought I would try a diffrent way and came across your older video, bit stuck now but I will try the newer option again and see what happens but I can't get it to do 3 beeps, I'm holding down sync and eject button tap the power while holding down that two buttons, it just shuts off after 5 seconds
my xbox loading screen didnt get put in. i downloaded your file and extracted it. yours says .dat in the file name and mine doesnt. could this have something to do with why my loading screen is black?
I can highly suggest this guide to others. The official instructions provided by Microsoft for Offline updates are not entirely accurate. I had to go through multiple user guides to determine that I only required OSU1 update, not OSU 2 or 3 first, despite the official instructions stating otherwise.
The internal HDD in Xbox One (Launch Edition) failed last week, and I have tried to make the same switch with the same drives you show in the video (coincidence), I have a 2TB Barracuda that I wiped and formatted (supposedly) to an Xbox state, that is, one with all the partitions, but I tried two different USB drives with all three versions of the OSU (so then, six distinct attempts), all of them start "preparing update" and do maybe 4 or 5% until stopping, giving me the message "there was a problem". But do I understand your video correctly, there is no need to attempt to format it to an Xbox state, the Xbox will do that automatically if you install it in an uninitialized state?
same issue here but was a new 2TB barracuda.with my "there was a problem" also have a E101 00000504 8B050041 . so i took out drive wiped per Andys last video "xbox had installed the partitions " wiped them and reinstalled ran 3 beep method and same result.. have you had any success Chris ?
For some reason I can no longer enter my troubleshooter in my one x. Will replacing the hard drive fix that and the issues I have? System is currently useless.
hi, I followed all the steps, but my xbox keeps on going with the black screen even in safe mode, even in 3rd beep situation. Could that be the video card, or the hdmi slot? how can i check that ?
Hello Paul, I'm just wondering what to do because my HDD SATA I is in the NTFS Format with nothing inside of it (Brand New), and everytime I go to my Xbox One to hold onto the Pair and Eject Buttons, I press the power button and only 2 Power-up sounds come up, the 3rd one doesn't even sound on and then I get 3 power-down sounds and it closes...
I've got a very interesting scenario with my Xbox that I've yet to find a solution online so I hope your insight can help me to resolve my situation. I have an original Xbox one that hasn't been used before. When I turned it on it said update failed but didn't give me an error code. Tried to install OSU1, however no matter how many times I've tried to go into troubleshooting mode it simple doesn't allow it, when I do it correctly it doesn't give three beeps it simply stays on a black screen until I let it go of the buttons and then it just does a normal boot. I then tried to reformat the hard drive on the Xbox but I still run into the same problem. I think I might know a solution, is it possible to format the hard drive in a certain way that it'll force it to go into troubleshooting mode on startup without doing the button sequence? If so then please let me know. Thanks.
there is a problem, the 2021 way did not work for me, and now using the old method when I install a 1tb drive the update partition is too small to copy the files into a and b
@@adelacosta6886 use partition manager like AOMEI PARTITION ASSISTANT and right click on SYSTEM UPDATE merge you unallocated space on the SYSTEM UPDATE FILE and if you need more space RIGHT CLICK ON USER AND SPLIT IT THEN ADD IT TO YOUR SYSTEM UPDATE
Hi, your videos have really helped so far! Is it important tho to extract the Microsoft files to the usb drive from archives? I just directly unzipped the files from the download folder to the usb drive. When I plugged in the drive to the Xbox and turned it on using the method you demonstrated I just got a black screen with text in multiple languages saying System error and the code E200 000000EF and E101. Why does this happen… anyone with the same problem ?
Hey Andy.. I did everything and I see E102 error . Any idea?I also wanna double confirm with you that I did not use those olden methods of partitions.. Just this video thats it ! By the way the original 500gb hdd is dead so I am replacing it with new hdd 500gb... have done this many times.. but this console is just making me crazy.... so confused... should I go back to old method? I don't have any idea on insider program... it's my clients xbox
The old method is not gonna work because, the new osu1 is 6.4gb and partition size of system update x is just 12gb.. so when you copy files to folders A and B you would run out of space.....

Update:
It worked!! Thank you! Even though I put the boot-up animation in the $SystemUpdate file, I have no boot-up animation lol, but I’ll wait and see if it fixes itself. Will update if it does.
Update: After about 3 days of turning my Xbox on without the bootup animation, it fixed itself! Now my happiness is complete 🥲
hi andrew you only need to press and hold the bind button while powering up. the eject actually does nothing and is a myth. give it a go and you'll see what I mean. great work by the way 👍
Thanks for the info
Thank you for this detailed video. When my HDD died I followed this exactly and got my Xbox back up and running. The only issue I have is that my online games will not connect to the games servers. I can play games fine offline and all my apps (Netflix, CZcams etc) connect to the internet and work fine. I just can’t play online games. It was working fine before the original HDD gave up and I have the same router and ISP. Any ideas what is wrong?
Thank You so Much!!
Thnx!
Hey thank you for the vid. My Xbox One X cant go anymore in troubleshooting mode. Can you give me some advices?
had 102 error with 250gb from old xbox hdd , i reinstalled on the default 500gb with osu1 in another usb it runs thx bro
Obviously the sata cables from an Xbox one, will fit in any other Xbox one. The one X can be fiddly, but it can be done
Hi !
now no need to create partition on PC if you want to change your HDD ?
Hello! this is my tip for change the HDD..
I only get 2 beeps, and the trouble shooting screen, and it won't let me pick the boot from USB option, any thoughts?
thanks much bro .
I tried to upgrade my hdd. The thing is the eject button turns on the xbox. I cant hold sync, eject and then press power. Why does my xbox power on with the eject button? It is phat xbox one 500gb.
The xbox now has beep on, 5 seconds then beep off issue.
thank you saved my Xbox wasn't able to reinstall after my HDD died.
good job mate.
Thanks mate :)
I still got error message during offiline update "E101 00000504 8B050041" and cannot proceed. I try to replace samsung 870 qvo ssd for my Xbox X. Also, I got not enough space for A & B in System Update (X:) partition due to large size of the OSU1
thanks mate
Im beginning to wonder if the thing where the console creates the partitions is something that microsoft added to the firmware as a result of the next gen consoles using non standard SSDs (which is modular, fortunatly, unlike the PS5 where it is soldered to the board), especially if the now previous gen and the next gen use pretty much the same firmware
I must have had that thought in my head for at least the last 24 hours or so
Having the same thought right now. My one x lasted barely a year and a half and there is people I know with 7 years on a box. This is fucking bullshit.
So, I have a Crucial 970 gig drive, and it does not seem to be working. It's over 500 gigs so it SHOULD work, right?
You the goat
thank you for the new update tutorial. I have Emailed on 27/04/2021 you about a problem I get with the older tutorial as my system crashes at the start of stage 2 I will try this new one
Hopefully this one will work for you bud!
Hi Andrew I am still having the problem I mentioned in my email on 27/04/2021 can you help me some advice.
Two questions -
New HD straight out the box, OSU1 and voila, XBOX live again ;-)
NB, I think the OSU package is 6.53GB so ensure you have a USB with enough space
Thank you for watching - congrats on the fix! :)
Can I use a brand new sealed HDD , use the script and put in Xbox with the usb update method as I'm constantly stuck in e101, e102 and e106 loops
Excellent :-)
its giving me an option to update after setting up my language, should i do it? i have a wired connection hooked up.
Here's a very late thank you Andrew!
Thank you very much @juanherrera2272! :-)
this works for being stuck on the something went wrong screen when putting in new internal?
What hardware issue would cause it not to update?
Tried update 1, 2 and 3 plus 3 different hard drives. All clean.
Get either E101 or E106 .
I get them also
2tbb ssd install one x
Putting back standard hdd, works fine
(Also did some new thermal paste)
Hi Paul great video. Run into problems trying this now as the system update file is to big for the partition. I installed into file A onto system update (x:) this partition is 11.9gb the file placed into file A is 6.61 GB so when I copy this to file B it is to big. I did try your new video and had no luck so thought I would try a diffrent way and came across your older video, bit stuck now but I will try the newer option again and see what happens but I can't get it to do 3 beeps, I'm holding down sync and eject button tap the power while holding down that two buttons, it just shuts off after 5 seconds
Running into the same problem…
my xbox loading screen didnt get put in. i downloaded your file and extracted it. yours says .dat in the file name and mine doesnt. could this have something to do with why my loading screen is black?
I can highly suggest this guide to others. The official instructions provided by Microsoft for Offline updates are not entirely accurate. I had to go through multiple user guides to determine that I only required OSU1 update, not OSU 2 or 3 first, despite the official instructions stating otherwise.
I’ve got the Xbox one X, do I only need the OSU1? Thank you
No second beep, no repair screen, no third beep. Multiple USB drives, multi hard disks, all the same.
Are your thumb drives NTFS formatted? By default they resort to FAT32 or exFAT, neither of which will work and will cause the symptoms you're finding.
Glad I stumbled upon my email with my comment on the old video… I could’ve find it with a search. Awesome video.
Thank you!
Hello Paul, I'm just wondering what to do because my HDD SATA I is in the NTFS Format with nothing inside of it (Brand New), and everytime I go to my Xbox One to hold onto the Pair and Eject Buttons, I press the power button and only 2 Power-up sounds come up, the 3rd one doesn't even sound on and then I get 3 power-down sounds and it closes...
why would you downgrade
Thanks.
Hi, This has all the hallmarks of a defective disk to me. I'd replace it with a new one and retry the OSU1 install from there.
Will this help with my Xbox that won’t update and is stuck in a continuous update loop?
Bro u save my game I follow through and it worked my 3 year old is screaming cause he can watch and play is games
there is a problem, the 2021 way did not work for me, and now using the old method when I install a 1tb drive the update partition is too small to copy the files into a and b
Try Western Digital brand!
Hey bud, the file is 6.2 gb my 6 gig said the same thing idk if that’s what you meant tho
Im having the same issue. Did you managed to solve it?
