- These 3 cards from Modern Horizons 3 are crazy powerful and are sure to be included in a ton of decks going forward. Let's talk about why these cards are so good and where they'll see play. This set has a ton of powerful cards and so these 3 seem like standouts to me, but I want to know which new cards from spoiler season you're interested in below.

Marionette apprentice is such a good callback to marionette master from Kaladesh
I love that callbacks are the theme of this set down to the commons ❤
Good callback? Marionette is still widely used today. They simply just plowed over her to make a new/better one.
So i now get a smaller backup marionette master for my prosper deck? Sweet!
My exact thoughts! We know it'll do work 😂😂
Prosper been eating so good lately
warren soultrader, zulaport, and gravecrawler go infinite damage. absolutely nuts card
We did it, we broke Gravecrawler. Though to be fair, I'm sure we'll be saying "We did it, we broke Warren Soultrader" soon enough.
Gravecrawler
Reassembling Skeleton
Bloodsoaked Champion
Forsaken Miner
Oathsworn Vampire
Bloodghast (potentionally)
And Zulaport Cutthroat
Falkenrath Noble
Blood Artist
Bontu Monument
Ayara, First of Lochtwain
Bastion of Remembrance
Warren Soultrader or Phyrexian Altar
:)
Cool, Revel in Riches just became even easier yet again
Every time they print treasure producers in black Revel in Riches becomes easier to achieve
Yeah I remember pulling one in ixalan and never winning with it once the whole block since treasure generation so pretty slow back then. Nowadays if I have it out to get the treasures I just accidentally win from it. I kind of wish it didnt have the win con stapled to it tbh, then it wouldn't be as threatening and draw everyone's attention.
Chatterfang is going to love the infinite treasures. All you need is any creature etb gains you 1 life and you win.
Last card combos with the second card! Just gotta find a way to bring something back over and over
Gravecrawler is the easiest way
I wanna consider if there's a way to make this work with Goldhound from New Capenna. It might not even be the best card, but artifact creatures with sac/die payoffs seem like the way to go. assuming your black zombie goblin wants to run with red goblins, which doesn't seem like too much of a stretch
I'm surprised you didn't mention basking broodscale, the common that combos with whatever's lying in your junk drawer at the time.
For Treasure strategies. Warren Soultrader is a no brainer. However for most combos and strategies, feel like Ashnod’s or Phyrexian Altar are just much better
And 20€
I love seeing some traditional painting art on these cards! Getting tired of them all looking the same with the digital art.
Warren Soul Trader is going to be really cool in casual Inalla decks because you can sacrifice the wizard token you make before you’re forced to on end step and essentially get a mana refund for the eminence cost or just to ramp efficiently. Add in a bastion of remembrance type effect and you net even on the life loss.
Warren is literally a combo piece for gravecrawler and some ltb trigger bloodartist, etc
Immediately taking that Soultrader and Marionette for my Kambal, Profiteering Mayor deck no questions asked
Warden and apprentice are perfect upgrades for my Chatterfang deck
Warren soultrader is what edh needed. They have been buffing combat to the point most "combat decks" are weird critical mass combo decks, its good to see aristocrats get love. The apprentice also means another payoff to avoid paying four mana for such an effect
Warren Soultrader is literally a combo engine. Soultrader (is a zombie) + Gravecrawler + Aetherflux Reservoir = infinite lifegain and infinite 50 damage to any target.
The commander product is giving us Gluttonous Hellkite. It's a 3/3 flying trampler that costs XX and jund. On cast, all players must sac X creatures and it enters with 2 +1/+1 counters for each sacrifice
Warren Soul Trader + Wilhelt + Gravecrawler isn’t infinite but it would make a decent amount of 2/2s
Replace wilhelt with any blood artist and it is instant win
marionette apprentice is gonna be so dope in my prosper tomebound deck where i have marionette master already as a win con
Aye same!
Warren soul trader will make a beautiful addition to my deck. Slap down a pact weapon on him and just start sacking tokens to trigger the gravepact. Bonus points if syr konrad the grim is out with mindcrank. Yes, i can just use it to cycle gravecrawler, however, id rather use the treausre to pay for the non zombie cards. As rooftop storm already got me covered there
Why Pact Weapon on it? So you don't die to a Bolt effect? Better off just using a Blood Artist variant since it just keeps your life total up and drains people.
We thank Marionette Apprentice for being the new “For Prosper” card of the set along with giving us Ragavan and the fetches
They had to make it a zombie too lol
Strix serenade is not that good if talking about cedh. I don't think I'll see much play outside of decks that don't have other colors for artifact or creature interaction. It lacks the flexibility of being able to protect your combo and stop opponents combo. Also, idk about warren soultraded. I tried it in my korvold deck, and It's performace is very underwhelming. Now in modern these cards might actually see play. We'll see
What are you talking about? Ragavan exists in modern, its finally about time we have a response to it on cast
1 mana counterspells in general always see play in sidedecks to stop specific decks.
honestly i think the counter is pretty decent for cedh. planesealker means literally nothing. that, but creature and artifact are pretty decent. dockside and one ring, also mental misstep style countering fast mana. it’s not as good as swan song, but i think blue farm and similar stuff will run it. i like it more that miscast
@@ShpeedleStern scolding has existed for quite awhile. Ragavan has been able to be countered on turn 1 for awhile. Scolding is better because it doesn’t leave behind a 2/2 turn 1.
@@hollowoatand Bowmaster
@@joshuagriffith9191 i’m talking about in cedh. I’m sure it’s terrible for modern (what it’s meant to be designed for, but with these precons..)
I'm so glad I pulled a copy of all of these from my box
Soultrader is legit just a gremlin
YES THE APPRENTICE!!! PROSPER IS GOING TO THE RAVE
Shirei has been buffed again the Geneva convention has become the geneva suggestion
Very excited for more Jan-Jan support 😈
Long time don't see a great update for my zombies.
My new Kambal deck is eyeballing that Warren Soultrader pretty hard
Strix Serenade is great for countering important creatures like Dockside and Thassa's Oracle. I would argue that Stern Scolding might be better, but why not run both?
Great.......another 1 mana cost counterspell with almost no downsides. THANKS WIZARDS!
In modern and legacy the fact that it’s a card that effectively 2 for 1s you when you cast it means it won’t see much if any play….same reason swan song is primarily and edh card… so I don’t think we have to worry about this one too much! 😊
The downside is not being able to counter half of the cards in the game
@@unknowncalibur5242literally, like yes it’s good but in only think it will be in commander and swan song is still better as far as cedh goes.
Yeah I dont think its an issue, still worse than swan song tbh. Same reason you'd usually rather have negate than a essence scatter, but artifacts is a solid base to cover. The only problematic counters imo are the free ones since they aren't telegraphed at all.
I think you're forgetting about the 2/2 bird
I don't think the new 1 drop blue counter spell is going to be a staple in Competitive Commander as Swan Song is just way better for being able to counter sorceries and instants. Rarely you would want to counter a plainswalker or artifact or even creature, like for a format that is too involved with the stack it's just too situational
The One Ring
@@marshallscot Ok?
Yeah I agree for the most part swan song is still better. That said covering artifacts and creatures is handy on the same card. Lets you cheaply cancel someone's commander or one of the many artifact combo/value pieces that seem to be in almost every deck. Like the one ring, bolas' citadel, aetherflux resevoir, phyrexian/ashnods altar, KCI, etc. The problem is creatures and artifacts are both much more likely to be cheated into play via graveyard recursion, which is usually a sorcery so swan song already covers that lol.
@@dislikebutton9571 and the few cases where Swan Song don't work well you probably couldn't have countered it anyways if ya needed a 1 mana counter spell and not casting your Force of Will considering playing 1 mana counter spells implies you are playing high power or competitive in the first place. Like there are just so many cards such as Force of Will free counter spells that you could put into the deck to counter all the other stuff that Swan Song does not cover
Warren soul trader and chatterfang is wild.
It gets even better when you throw prosperous inkeep into the mix, since whenever a creature enters the battlefield, you gain a life and whenever a token is created, you get a squirrel so you get infinite squirrels to sacrifice and infinite life to sacrifice them with giving you infinite treasure tokens
Warren soultrader is an auto include in chatterfang decks
i always like the mtg's flavor text...
My infinite life gain plus wilhelt being my commander the board should be very afraid
Warren Soultrader, Aetherflux Reservoir and Gravecrawler might be something different to add to my zombies deck
So I know these aren't Zombies but they are all apart of this guy or Phyrexian Altar in his places Infinite combos with any of the Aristocrat Pingers.
Oathsworn Vampire
Bloodsoaked Champion
Forsaken Miner
Gravecrawler
Reassembling Skeleton
Bloodghast potentionally with shenanigans.
And I just found one more but forgot their name.
I know not zombies but all get value from Warren Soultrader
@@travisbillmyre9718 I already knew this combo, but I just found the one I said to be more on theme and fun
I'm meh on the Marionette Apprentice honestly; there's already tons of pingers for both artifact and aristocrat decks that it's kinda just redundant at this point.
Free body tho
Warren soultrader goes infinite with blood artist and chatterfang
OMG, I love MTG!😃👍🍻
I want more non-blue counters.
The red flare is the first non-blue free counterspell, I believe. Or at least, it can counter other counterspells
@@sorin_markov
Yeah, but I want more than like the 10-15 that exists.
@@benfurnish2052 Then, too bad ig? Color pie exists for a reason, you have to take subpar options if you want a specific effect in a deck that doesn't include the color where that specific effect happens. Either splash that color or use the worse off-color versions
@@sorin_markov 🤓
@@benfurnish2052 There are more than 15 if you look in older sets. But they are usually situational or counters enemy colors...or even old stuff like Brine Shaman which is 1B hat has a activated blue ability to counter target creature spell, Ice age counters kinda were annoying for that
Ok so in total so far there are about 32 cards maybe a bit more that says "Counter target so and so spell" that are not in blue or need blue mana to activate it or that have devoid while being blue or the ward mechanic. I also ignored any Unsets as those are not real cards
Though funny thing is i don't remember if Black or White had the least amount of counter spells barring colorless
chatterfang gonna eat
Wait, we still used the archaic terminology for “dies” when not exclusively referring to creatures? 🤯
I wish more people played around my area. Until that happens ill just stick to online unfortunately
Strix serenade seems so good on paper but it's just too niche
Enter with a counter or WHAT???
Nothing but staple hate
Marionette apprentice is a busted disciple of the vault that it
I don't have these three cards
That’s because they aren’t out yet
I absolutely do not want to any format with 1 mana counterspells. I lived through turn one mana leak, turn two counterspell in standard back in the day. Its just not fun. Maybe Modern really does need such spells, but if thats true then it sounds like a very unfun format.
Unreal
I’m already salty about Strix Serenade 😫
where is NADU
More old art pla
Hell yes! Another Phyrexian Altar like creature in Black! My Mono Black Aristocrat deck with Ayara, First of Lochtwain is going to be that much stronger. And also getting a nice creature to be apart of the Infinite Combo with Forsaken Miner from Outlaws too! I am so happy!
Ah yes because i woke up the other day and said to myself "you know what blue really needs? MORE counter spells"
It's a core identity of the color and this new one fills a specific niche opposite to swan song. Good design
@@killeryodellingmonkey4192 bruh I'm just bitching about blue, it's not that deep
@@killeryodellingmonkey4192 also real shit if I was gonna actually bitch, it would be about the potential return of Eldrazi Winter 2.0
yea that's kinda how new sets work
@@e-maniac2168 as I mentioned to the other dude who takes this shit WAY too seriously, I'm just bitching about blue, like most people who don't play it. It really isn't that deep my guy
Why can't they create new powerful cards stop relying on thassas Oracle and stuff like that
Nothing here relies on thoracle?
If you think having answers to thoracle is “relying on it” you don’t understand magic
@@yurplethepurple2064💯
strictly better Erg Raiders
Warren soultrader is super busted with gravecrawler, infinite etb and death trigger so you need another card that can drain opponent whenever grawler die
why are they boosting the power level so high?
m o n e y
You do realize that you don't have to use these cards right? also you do realize there are casual players that like playing with high power right? Wizards caters to everyone or at least tries to if they think it can make them money
@@JohnnyYeTaecanUktena Doesn't matter if you personally don't play these cards or if you play at a lower power level, power creep still really affects you. Other people *will* play these cards and *lower* power level is in comparison to the high power level, so it gets indirectly raised too.
@@sorin_markov Have you not heard of rule 0? it's this thing people usually use or bring up to dismiss arguments they don't wanna have. But anyways if you don't have a personal play group to discuses what you would or would not like to see played then oh well these cards are not that problematic just play removal for the non instant ones. Like it's not really a problem with power levels
But then again i have been playing for years so you kinda get a feel of "Oh this card might be broken or great" then you play it and are like "Oh it's shit". The counter spell is just useless in higher power considering higher the power goes the more they use the stack so artifacts and or creatures usually are pointless to counter and i don't know why you would counter a plainswalker
@@JohnnyYeTaecanUktena So your argument is a combination of "nobody can play cards I don't like" and "dies to removal"? Neither of those is a good argument.
Artifacts and creatures are still really strong things to counter. One of those types includes *commanders.* I'm personally not a fan of inflexible counterspells like Swan Song, but they're used a lot in high-power games, so I can't argue with the results.
I hate this set
The eldrazi are all so disgusting
Actually need to agree with you holy crap, I don't want to face most of the precons even
Real, I'm so tired of seeing them. Ugly art, bad overly pushed design, just does a nearly uncounterable effect on cast and wins the game after 1 turn if left unanswered. So lame. As if green ramp and WUBRG mana cheat needed more toys brainlessly vomit onto the board and win with.
Modern is dead. RIP
Marionette works in a Heartless Summoning combo shell with Myr Retriever. The two toughness matters.
Warren soultrader is super busted with gravecrawler, infinite etb and death trigger so you need another card that can drain opponent whenever grawler die
A single blood artist. The even curve into each other perfectly
