Having no experience in this particular area, it is the first time that we are going to work with such project. We got some knowledge and inspiration, from an expert in the jet engines domain, @RobertMaddox. We decided to make our own pulse jet engine, that we are going to use on a bike in our upcoming project.

No joke, I've seen some reckless things in my time, but misting gasoline into the air while manually connecting/disconnecting the fuel pump wires to a battery a foot away is staggeringly dangerous. You are always going to get sparks connecting a motor to a battery, it's just a matter of how big.

awesome project just one concern is the compressed air hose for the fuel line which will swell with contact to gasoline, if the pump is under 20 psi (which it looks like). Normal fuel hose with work but an efi pump 200-300 psi will need efi fuel hose. Cant wait to see what this goes in

It's to short. increase the length and add a short cone to the end. If a pulse jet is to short it won't fire at all. if it is to long it will run but not very well. Also you are correct in that your reed valves need to be spring steel.

Your valve stack is missing spacer plate between each reed valve. The German V1 has spacer plates. My engines run for several hours with no valve damage, I thought maybe the spacer plate prevent valves from bumping each other when engine are running but high speed video show valves flap in the wind like a flag. Maybe space plates create smoother air flow through the reed valves. Space plate .030 metal thickness works good.

You could have just used the body of the rocket to gassify the fuel and then combust it so that its a continual process, feed in the gas via a venturi intake to get around the issue of the reed valve. Look up Primus stoves and Tilley Lamps, they gassify kerosene that is then burnt to cook or lighting.

Spring steel would have been a bit better like you noted at the end. Though I imagine you’d run into a few issues with that insomuch as you’d have to calculate the optimal air flow rate which I imagine could be resolved by using the 2q^2+q equals your max practical discharge rate which you’d then be able to use the optimal AFR to determine how much gas to inject and also therefore the optimal air flow rate given that pressure which would give you how much surface area the spring steel needs to open up to let air in.

Immediately after ww2 my father worked at the national gas turbine establishment at Farnborough. One of his colleagues had been part of the team interrogating the German V1 team. When asked as to what the vanes were made of, expecting some exotic alloy, the Answer was , Mild steel. Don’t be ridiculous says the English man. That wouldn’t last five minutes ! Ah, says the German gent, the journey only takes three minutes. Not quite true but point made.

Walter Kaaden an engineer with Argus worked after the war for MZ (the original DKW factory). He was the first to achieve > 200bhp per litre from a piston engine. His knowledge of gas shock waves and harmonics at different gas pressures allowed him to invent the two stroke expansion chamber exhaust. That’s a static device that uses harmonic shock waves to supercharge the engine.
His secrets were stolen by Suzuki when his race rider defected during a race.

I could be wrong here, but I think the spark created at the 12v battery terminals might not be optimum for the fuel-air mixture to ignite. That said, I wouldn't like to be around to check out my theory 😜😲. Here's a fun fact for you fellow closet- machinist-test-lab-nerds: 57 years ago, as part of my electrical apprenticeship in the English coal mines, we had to study electrical, mechanical, and mining sciences to help us understand the underground environment we would be working in, better. Professor Hedley (mining sciences) was a really likeable hands-on teacher, and my favourite guy in college. In his class we learned that the perfect (and dangerously worst) Methane (Ch4) to-air mixture was 14%. The rapid-burning, expansion, or the explosion of this gas-air ratio travels at (are you ready) four (4) miles per second, when ignited. Now add powdered coal dust to the mix, and you get an idea how powerful internal combustion is.
I was as curious as others here about the THRUST created by this pulse-jet engine. If anyone here understands the math involved in combustion physics above, I'd really like to know what you come up with. 4 miles per second multiplied by sparks per second, combined with the thrust nozzle diameter should make for some interesting numbers.
Happy New Year from sunny S.Louisiana.

I'd see about figuring out if you could use Mr.Tesla's design of valvular conduit to reduce moving parts while keeping a high level of efficiency. I know some other channel would love to figure out if it's possible, but he lacks the equipment. Also, the valves need a very precise, flat surface to work right. it wasn't the steel type, it was that the steel couldn't seal against the base metal. the sealing surfaces need to be at the very least, surface ground. however, a higher polish will increase the sealing. the reeds, themselves, need to be precisely made, too, with the bends bing exact, and the edges being perfectly flat. this is a part you can't make without, either a really good shearing stamp and de-burr, or a laser cutter with rather optimized paths for cooling and avoiding warping. Just, avoid warping.

Were you able to get it to run without additional compressed/feed air? That's the only issue I was having with mine except mine maxed the propane flow capabilities of a normal 20lb tank (internal flow limiter). I was thinking about linking several camping style tanks together as they don't have these limiters (far as I know). I don't think I want to go the gasoline route quite yet. If you don't mind me asking, what unit did you go with for ignition?
