You have a great voice and your wife is an awesome video hostess. The camper looks great! Well done!
Thank you Anne-Marie!
I really like the way you utilized features already in the ambulance but repurposed them for camper use. Like the oxygen locker for propane bottles. Super conversion!
Like the way you kept and repurposed everything and added the things to make it yours...
Thanks Alan! she was a fun project....
The best part of doing the conversion yourself is you get the unit you need for the type of camping you do. I am considering doing an ambulance conversion so this type of video is helpful. I'm glad you were able to add a few windows as well as a roof A/C. Thank you for sharing your project.
Thank you for watching and your comments. Best wishes on your project!
Very cool. Easy...simple...perfect for a single person....great for a couple as well
Thanks Randy!
Looking so good!!😍 I just bought an antique International Ambulance last week!
It will need work done on the inside, outside is vinyl wrapped and unique...looks sharp, but one knows it’s still an ambulance. I’m old enough to be your parents and your children’s grandma, but I’ve always done weird things: snow and water skiing, SCUBA diving, started showing dogs in my 60’s, did protection work with my German Shepherd. I met my hubby while selling a horse, dated, married, and had two sons. Now a widow during COVID-19 and very bored, so a new project!!
I love what you’ve with yours, and have given me good ideas. Love the fabric on your couch/bed. I’m going for a “cabin” look! Don’t know how I’ll translate all that
yet into decorating idea!!
I really that seat’s ability for the back to be dropped for increased counter space,
then put back up for extra seating.
Again, congrats on a great job!!, Shirley
Best conversion I've seen yet! TFS
That's an impressive conversion! Love the compartments that are accessible from both inside and outside. Such a great idea!!
Thank you! It was a fun project.
I'm loving all the storage nooks... Looks well planned out... Thanks for sharing! 👍👍👍
We just got an ambulance to convert! Love finding all these channels with conversions!
Thanks Cindy! Have fun with yours!
Wow! The ambulance was such a great idea! Its perfect that all of the storage was already installed with compartments to fit the toilet, the propane and the trash just right! Great idea and very creative! Great Job! I love it!
Thanks Garrett! The storage compartments are what sold us. We're happy with how everything turned out!
I told my brother same thing, he drove an ambulance. He disagreed saying you cant life in one. I said why, it's got a bed, cabnets, power, ac, heat, lighting, its prevect.
@@anthonythorp7291 First responders see a lot of really horrible things in their jobs, the stress causes them to have a higher rate of suicide. Not sure a paramedic would WANT to live in one without having nightmares.
@@recoveringsoul755 Yes, quite understandable they would not want one but still makes all kinds of useful vehicles for others.
I got transported about 2 yrs ago. Guy told me ambulance getting replaced soon and he planned on buying for football party wagon.
You have a soothing voice, so relaxing to listen. Your wife is pretty and friendly. She has a cute smile.
The converting an ambulance looks so cozy and comfy. Well thought out and nicely done.
You did a great job.
God bless both of you and stay safe.
I am so happy you enjoyed it Antonio! Thank you!
That is one enviable RV, Jim! Great to see what you have done with this, Your bed is fantastic! This is adaptive genius. Glad you kept the bones of the ambulance, it gives character. I would like to build my own too, but wish I had some of your expertise. I remodeled my Class C RV by myself with no knowledge of anything - had to research build, materials, buying and using the tools! I love your use of the long cabinet as toilet room, very nice spot.
One thing I saw a guy do on a Sprinter van, he cut a hole in the floor and had a lift out handle. On warm days, the coolest air is under the van, so he created a cool air current like this. Smart! One of the boldest creative moves I saw. Takes guts to cut a hole in your van floor. I also saw a bus restoration. This vintage bus had vents below the dashboard, so instant cool air came in even when driving. Wonder why they don't build cars like that.
Thanks Lass, I appreciate your comments. We now have a Sprinter van we are converting and I'd like to channel air from underneath; it's got a 12 volt fan in the roof that would pull the air in/out.
@@JimWaltz Check out what Dave Orton did to his Ford Transit van conversion, one of the smartest conversions on CZcams. He used to have a Sprinter but switched to a Transit. He made a hole in the floor and lifted up the cover to get the cool air underneath to flow into the van while turning on fan and opening windows. Smart! He is an engineer and quite the inventor. There are some creative people out there, and thanks to CZcams we get to see all their inventions like yours. Imagine how much education we now have compared to the past. Please do share your hole in the floor idea when it is complete. I would love to see what you did!
Will do!
Beautiful conversion! Happy adventures! ✌️❤️😘
Very nice conversion, i really liked how you changed the exterior to make it not look Like a ambulance aside from Woodworking another hobby of mine has been sewing i used to get strange looks from people that weren’t sure if i was joking or not especially when they met me for the first time in a fabric store i used to tell them nope I’m not joking but i like to do “Manly” sewing like auto interiors and boat cushions and canvas my. Actuall sewing machine will sew leather to a wooden yard stick ! One of the things i noticed right away on your conversion was the detail on the pull out bed and the cushions that. Look really professionally made ! My main incentive for wanting to learn upohlesry on my own was to save money but also to do repairs while out at sea and to build exactly the quality and what i want ironically i found it insanely fun and satisfying to do and women thought it was a cool thing because many of todays women do not know how to sew? Much at all or even own a sewing machine i have a few lol
You did a great job with it
Thanks Scott! Twas a blast!
The Ambulance RV would look cool with some badass exhaust stacks
Suggestion on water storage? You have extra storage for a 55gl water tank & grey tank under the bed. And plumbing is easy no freeze up. Also you can use plastic tubing. There are no codes in RVing.
Beautiful old Medtec Unit.
Those were well built Ambulances back in the 90's.
Now that’s cool! Great job. Always figured an ambulance would be a perfect camper. Tons of space and built very tough
Gotta love the storage! She's a beast!
Very lovely couple.
You did a great job with this! I absolutely *love* the port-a-potty cabinet; that is sheer brilliance.
Thanks Wendy!
if you want to crap with the door open...
That's one lovely camper a lovely wife and you're a very lucky boy. Enough storage for a small generator I guess so you can stop anywhere and still power the 110 volts. Will look forward to the video's of your trips away from home.
She's a keeper! Thanks Steve!
LOVVVVVE THIS ONE!!!!!!!
Thank you K!
Ha! You are actually easy to listen to, great and pleasant commentary. And what a beautiful build! Good job on the "small" modifications especially the bed does not feel out of place at all.
I currently have a bid on a Ambulance and hope to win it and do something similar with it! Again GREAT JOB! Nice people! :)
Thanks Obs! Best of luck with your project!
I really appreciate your conversion of your ambulance. I am going to consider that bed when I build my ambulance! Great job 👏
As old and "ridden hard" as this ambulance is…It's still better than most brand new RV's right off the assembly line.
I'm with ya on that. She's SOLID.
Oh yeah. I'm not a paramedic, but as far as I know, these trucks had religious maintenance, and the built in storage puts most Class B and C RVs to pure shame.
I’m just finding this and you both have done an awesome job!
Thank you Randy!
I really like what you did for the bed! Great idea. Thanks for taking the time to share.
Thanks Jim!
Jim, Nice build, but my favorite feature is the vented fan over the propane stove.
Thanks Alan!
I love ambulance conversions.... You guys did great!
Thank you Gimpy!
@@JimWaltz Just wanted to say last night I had this bright idea to start like a "brotherhood" of RV CZcamsrs to share tips and tricks. Also to receive constructive criticism which I'm in need of I'm sure!. If you are interested check it out... My channel is still very small but gaining momentum all the time. Just had this random idea and it may even be kind of dumb... but thought it was worth a try! @t
Well done in doing an ambulance conversion as well..this is a great job
Thanks Whiskey! It was a ton - o - fun!
Great job y'all
Nice layout and clean build!! I love it!
Thanks Hank!
Beautiful job! Excellent information. Thanks!
Thanks Ron!
The fact that I've never seen an ambulance shaped like that, says alot, lol. Sit & cook clever, lol
Thanks Jennifer!
You did a nice job..Thank you for the video..Have a Blessed Day..
Thanks Gail! She was a fun project!
Two people....one should record while the other gives the tour. Nice conversion.
Thank you Veronica!
It’s funny looking of this because when you guys open the doors and the drawers I know exactly what kinds of things were stored in those cupboards. I’m a paramedic so When they began pulling open the drawer at the door I’m thinking oh yeah that was probably the drug cabinet or IV supplies. LOL
I can only imagine! The cabinets were originally all labeled with what went where....
It still looks like an ambulance from the outside with the shape and all the lights, even if the lights don't work. Plus, to me it seems convenient to have all those compartments already there, but probably a bit too weird thinking about how many people died in there or spent their last moments ...... I lived in a house where the former owner committed suicide and strange things were seen occasionally.
Recovering Soul and many people are rescued and their life saved.
Yeah, I was laughing too like when he showed the locking trash bin, AKA sharps disposal and the head banger suicide seat on the litter side. They did not remove the IV bag holders, I guess you could hang laundry from them.
Renee4ever I was thinking the same thing, oh the O2 tanks went there etc etc.
nicely done.. happy trails ! thanks for sharing.
Thank you!
You can use the Lights on the ambulance. But, not on the road or public area. Can use them at Private Events, or on Own property.
Not in my state. They would be fined.
I like it. Great Job👍👍👍
Thanks 👍
Looove you conversion!!! Great job...enjoy. 👍❤❤❤
Thanks Kelly!
LOVE IT!
Outstanding work! I hope to do something like this one day, and I love all the ideas.
Thanks Glenn!
Very nice!
Thanks Tom!
Very cool. I am really looking into this ambulance thing. A lot of bang for the buck! Great job.
Thanks!!
Wow the the was the only thing that needed to add a little space
Check to see if it is illegal to keep the original ambulance red light. A lot of places, it is illegal. I love your conversion. I am trying to decide whether to get an ambulance or sprinter
We've never had any issues; it is illegal to operate the lights. Ours are disconnected. I had planned on installing an LED light bar in it's place.
Very nice. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching Larry.
Amazing how much space an so easiest to sanitizer clean and basically safe after all who's to say we wasn't transported to thanks for sharing Boomeramg the Heavens 💪❤️🙃💯
Great storage!
Love it!
Very good job!
Thank you!
I noticed that you have vent in the propane closet and it is on the top of the door. I would suggest that you add a vent to the bottom of the closet. Propane is heavier than air, so if you have a leak it will settle to the bottom and not go any where. This would cause a build up of propane in the closet, until it reaches a hole to escape from.
It seems that an ambulance is built with more quality than an RV.
They are solid!
Great conversion! Tfs
And thank Melinda!
Really nice, great job. Thanks.
Thank you Frank!
Nice job. Time to go camping
Thank you good sir!
Nice job you two. Thumb up. :-)
Great videos. You should join the Facebook group Emergency Vanlife. It's a forum for ambulance conversions. Great for sharing ideas and asking questions.
That is awesome...
Nice job love the ambulance conversion. I do have one thing to ask is where did you get your material for your couch/bed. Just love it. Keep up the great work.
Thank you Abraham. The aluminum came from a local metal shop. All else came from Home Depot or Amazon,
If you are looking for fabric... www.fabric.com - search for vintage upholstery material. Unless its for curtains, then lighter cloth. You can select texture and weight of fabric. Weight means thickness. Amazon now owns this shop, but they are located in Georgia and have the most amazing fabrics. For color I like Kaffee Fassett or Amy Butler.
That’s an armed car mad job im from Australia 🇦🇺 and want to do something similar to a Mercedes ex ambo those lights you still have on top will still get you there a bit quicker haha 😂
👍🌎👀 nice transformation to an rv.
Thank you Stephan!
Very nice love it
Thank you VL!
Wow really? my lights automatically turn on when I turn them on too! LOL
Yeah...but nobody's home....
Nice work
Thanks Cliff!
Really great rig.
Thank you Tom!
Nice.
Love it
Great move
Thanks Gee!
Very cool
Thanks Chris!
So, aside from the propane stove and the toilet, pretty much everything needs 110 power plugged in to work? No hot water (didn't see a shower anyway), no microwave, etc unless you are plugged in. "Camping" doesn't usually mean being plugged in. It's sleeping on the ground under the stars, or in a tent away from electricity, cooking over a fire or a backpacking stove. IS the roof flat? Look into solar panels and think about converting a propane water heater to solar power (Like Will Prowse did recently on his channel. He wrote a book on solar. He is a bit of a goofball, but really smart and been living in an RV of one kind or another for years). He is always testing out new stuff, has great tutorials.
Ambulances have large alternators and power inverters. Hed have to run the motor if not plugged in. But, still could use 120V system
Though you will probably never get this I love your ambulance build....if by chance you do get this where by chance did you pic up the exterior led light you replaced and who did you pick your windows you installed through...again really nice and much smarter than a sprinter unit
The outside lights were small, 12volt LED panels I got from Amazon and hardwired to the existing wiring. The windows I was able to find on ebay at a reasonable price; you need to find windows with a 'trim ring' that will fit the thickness of your walls. Thank you so much for your comments!
good video, and thank you Vanna lol
Good one!
That pretty cool.
Thanks Citizen!
I need one of these
🚨 Love it 🚨
I looked at the possible conversion of an ambulance to a camper but think a small or short bus would work better. You have plenty of storage. An awning outside would work, mabe even an add on room type setup would work better like those on a popup. Eather way its an awesome setup. very solid. I know where there are two ambulances currently available for sale. The bus I keep looking at is still available also. i would do all the conversion myself.
Will you share your info on ambulances & bus for sale?
Keep in mind that that pre-1990 Ford vans only have a 3 speed transmission. For 4 speed economy and noise, try to buy a 1990+, as the owners of this van did.
nice rig! Mine is the same paint scheme as yours. i havent started converting it yet, but i got some good ideas from yours. i also replaced all the red emergency lights with amber so i can still play with them without getting into trouble. if mine had a lightbar, Id replace those too with amber lenses, so you can use it without getting a felony. also I replaced the red lenses in the strobes in grill with amber too. From the glances I got from the control panel on the dash, it looks like it was made by Mccoy Miller. again nice rig!
Thanks for your input Mark!
Good job. Am planning to buy one and do the same and go traveling. live in Vancouver,BC.
Thanks Joe! Best of luck on your project! Share what you learn with the rest of us!
Very impressed with the ingenuity and attention to detail with your ambulance buildout. I have a 1991 E350 Medtech Ambo as well, but mine seems to be in a more stripped condition(no inverter, documentation, siren, etc) than yours. Layout seems EXACTLY the same so your vids are giving me great ideas on what to do in the future. By chance, do you folks still have anything Medtech-related such as wiring diagrams or equipment schematics? I'm flying blind with mine and any help would be appreciated greatly. Thanks very much and good luck on your current build!
I do not. If you review some of the earlier videos, I am hunting which wire go where with a 12v DC transformer. Thanks Micheal.
Thanks for the fast response Jim! Hopefully we will both eventually have some luck on our respective quests. Cheers
Amazing
Thanks! It was a fun conversion!
I went back and watched all the videos on this build. Great work and giving me some good ideas. What ate you using for heat.
Honestly we just use a small portable electric unit. We tend to camp in warmer weather....
Great bed design was looking for some alternatives for doing a sprinter ambulance build up. Can you describe your experience with the electrical and getting it to be more rv friendly? I know many require key in the ignition for the inverter to function etc.
Thanks Perry. Our other videos go into great detail of adapting the wiring and electrical. We installed a regular 30 Amp RV power converter.
Love it! Ya'll did a great job converting it. How long can the ac run without engine being on?
AC will only run if we're plugged in to shore power.
Nice work.......video would have been enhanced inside the camper with wide angle shots. Everything is in close up, so you don’t get a sense of the total space
Thanks for the tips!
Wow,you guys have a bed and seating in a conversion.nice
Good job. But next time let us see the a nice full and slow sweep of the interior before you start showing close up of items.
Good idea!
Very nice! Definitely envious of your conversion. I have a few questions if you don't mind: 1. How long did this project take? 2. About how much money did it take? 3. How heavy is the vehicle and what MPG do you expect?
Good questions. We've been working on this for a couple years among other projects (we're now converting a Sprinter Van which we'll be showing soon). The ambulance cost $5200 initially. We've put thousands of dollars and hours into the conversion. Can't tell you for sure how much, but lots! Not sure of the weight, but it averages around 10.4 MPG diesel.
hello and awesome conversion. I recently got a 89 e350 ambulance and am going to do a conversion as mine is nearly the same as this I am very interested in your build I well be posting some videos myself but well be a day or so... The ambulance sat for around a yr and was broken into and electrical and tv equipment was stolen as well as one of the dually wheels (was a radio station promotion rig in the past) anyways again great job. I would really like to know how you did the bed!?
Check out the #12 Video; it does a pretty fair job of detailing the bed construction. Thanks!
That looks to be a LifeStat ambo body. MOST importantly, these units are extremely well made and "crash survivable", which if you have ever seen your average RV roll over in a median, are crazy UNDER built. So, say your mate wants to stretch out in the back .....they are less likely risking their lives. I bought a LifeStat from a guy who knew how well built they were...they don't even try to crush them with a LARGE excavator...they have to break them down differently. It's usually 4020 aluminum I beam with foam insulation .......very snug units in the winter. ..... additionally, ceiling height is not optimal if your 5'10" or more. I will eventually build my ambo/camper with my LifeStat box, a super duty (f450) straight frame from a 1990's chassis cab, 4x4 and I am not sure if its gonna be a van cutaway or an OBS extended cab. .. .. .. powerstroke/IDI.
Have fun, nice rig, nicely done. R
Thanks for the insight Reid!
Wow! Love this ambulance-to-rv conversion! Great job you two!
Just a couple of questions.... Can you go to the bathroom with the door closed or do you have to have it open? Just curious.
And, is it insulated well enough to stay in cold climates such as snowy places in the winter time?
Door open...unless you are a very tiny person. The walls have 2 inches of spray insulation throughout, so not bad!
@@JimWaltz
OK. Thanks for replying back. 😊
Jesus Christ!! You should call it ' The Compartment Monster Van Thingy ' 🚑👾👍😁🐕🤳 hehe :)
Storage!!
ı love it
My son was talking about converting an ambulance also but these things are expensive even the used ones.
Could you please tell me what I need to buy to get lights to automatically light up when I open my cabinet doors? Thank you 😊
This ambulance was made with a switch on the door that automatically lights up when open.
Can we get an update about life in the ambo? Would love to see what your thoughts are 7 months on.
Sadly it's now completed and sold. We have moved on to converting a 2011 Sprinter van (our dream machine) into an RV. I will be posting more about that.
Quick, there's an emergency! Open the beer cooler!
I know this video is several years old but any chance you still have that two way radio laying around? We are building an amateur radio communications vehicle out of an ambulance and could put it to very good use!
Actually sold the radio some time ago. Thanks for your interest.
