My first car in '87 was a 1979 Chevette two door saloon. Proper poverty spec too. Vinyl seats and cheap, East German made ditch finders that made it very tail-happy in the wet.
    Great days... 😆

First car I bought with my own money was a Vauxhall Chevette. It was badged as an Opel Kadett but it's the exact same thing. MUH 504P. It was the saloon and I paid £290 for it in 1989. I put some serious miles on it until it eventually died from lack of money spent on it and neglect. But I fkin loved it. Great memories

I had this exact car, in these exact colours. My dad bought it in 1983, and when I passed my test in 1991 it was given to me. Never gave me any issues apart from an odd problem when it would lose coolant from the radiator and would start to overheat, this almost always happened during motorway runs from Carlisle to Huddersfield. Sadly it 'died' in 1999 after failing its MOT as the sills and underneath the chassis rusted away to nothing and you could easily pop your fingers into the bodywork. It had just 56k miles on it when it was scrapped in Huddersfield, after serving me very well. I'm currently wearing a t-shirt which has a Chevette on it! I'll be looking forward to following your progress, lots of great memories!

There were lots of chevettes around back then. I have not seen one in at least thirty years. these cars were meant to have a short life span but you could buy a new one pretty cheaply and were good on gas mileage. Common sights in the big cities here back then, easy to park on downtown streets.

That is the original colour, it is missing a pinstripe and the lower vauxhall decal though, it was a special edition based on the chevette L, it should also have some funky wheel trims that were only fitted to that model.......I posted this comment before you opened the boot and saw the original wheel trims lol 😅

Motoring was totally different in those days, that would of been one of the last Chevettes and sow was designed in the 70s. The colour scheme was a limited edition but can’t remember the name, the wheel trims look genuine too. Vauxhall threw accessories at it such as the radio cassette and sunroof, even the passenger side mirror would of been optional for a basic model. It has a clock in the speedo cluster which was a higher spec option being the L model. The white markings between the temp and fuel gauges were just to make it resemble a a rev counter. Even down to the cig lighter was not standard on some of the models. The grill in the centre between the vents was for a single speaker as in those days it was more common to find a mono radio without cassette player. The service intervals were more frequent than today and I honestly think was better. The first service was probably after about a thousand miles of running the engine in, yep running it in was being gentle and not giving it the beans. I would be very surprised if that petrol tank wasn’t original as it is nice and protected in the boot and not exposed to the elements. Those stainless steel clips at the bottom of the headlamps was actually a recall by vauxhall in the late 80s as the glass lens kept dropping off.
All good stuff and a great example.
