I just play for fun usually 4s even up to 6s if we have a lot of people out. One of the things I've noticed is when the better players come out, a lot of them have habits vs. the chaos of intermediate and beginner players. Watch for habits. Sometimes a beginner is harder to play against because they do wild out of rhythm stuff.
For instance a lot of good hitters when they get a bad set will cut it to catch someone sleeping vs. swing. Most hitters like angle, but some like the satisfaction of sending something line over a defender's head and watching them back pedal trying to get it.
Just like you read the hitter for blocking, read them for digging too. You can fake them out by taking a step one direction away from where you want them to hit or serve but by being ready to go back. You can usually see if they're not going to hit a hard angle by their approach or if they slow up their arm swing. This is probably terrible advice, usually you get told keep your eye on the ball, but when it comes to someone about to hit, I think it's more important to watch the hitter's mechanics first and then switch to the ball. Hits usually take 1-2 seconds in beach, that's plenty of time to read the hitter and go back to the ball.

This is probably something you guys aren't familiar with, but where I live in Pennsylvania we have a competitive 6 man league that uses sawdust instead of sand. I'm not kidding. It's fine too, not like wood chips, but it's the perfect combination of firm yet still soft so a lot of us play barefoot. When we play 2's tourneys, I still am able to broad jump to the ball. So not a question, just a tale.
Also, I love Taylor's reaction to being blocked by Riley. You can see this huge smile on his face as he's walking away, he knew he was never gonna live that down....hahaha.

One thing i would also add is setting in different elements! i think I learnt the hard way as an indoor setter transitioning into the beach is how much the wind can affect your sets! Having to maybe not set as high when wind picks up

    VIDEO SUGGESTION😀
I really like this kind of explainatory videos of the basics for beginners or as tweaks for the experienced. I can show them to friends new to the sport and learn from them myself
It would be really nice if you could do a video or a bunch on rules.
Maybe differences between indoor and beach, basic rules, rules that are a little tricky or debated and rules that are easy to overlook if you have not read the rules or played with a referee.
Some examples of what I found/find hard to understand are:
Block touch and then passing it yourself
Hand setting, what is a lift
Touch the ball on the opponents side (block etc)
    Receiving double handed
    Attacking on the opponents serve
Is it always a net violation if you touch it
Saving a missed pass by running to the other side of the net
How can you handset it to the other side
Are there some ways you can not attack
If the attacker and the blocker holds the ball over the net
Video examples of right and wrong would be helpful😁

But I am asking myself, how comes you guys never showed us how to skyball? 🤔🙈

    • @MarkMyerson
      @MarkMyerson Před 3 lety +2

I actually found it pretty easy to learn.
Simply stand side-on to the court, and swing your arm directly upwards through the ball or slightly angled away from the court. (To impart more spin, Carambula adds extra whip)
Move your thumb to the side a little, so the ball is mainly bouncing off the side of your index knuckle.
To get the right mix of height, distance and spin, you need to strike the ball off-center. Imagine slicing upwards through the ball, so that you take off about 20% on the side facing away from the net.
Hopefully that all makes some sense if you read it while watching Carambula videos 😆 And would love to see a demo with him guys!

Would you be able to make a video on planning out defensive moves on a team? Like more of how to get your opponent to swing at you or into the block. Seems like there is more than just 1s2s3s and 4 blocks! Do u ever plan ahead for shoots set or any planned out attacks?

Maybe bring Taylor back for a hitting video about how to get out of trouble on tight sets - high hands, tool the outside arm, dink into the block to reset, etc.
As a shorter player with inconsistent setters, I know this is an area I need to work on.

4:10 is the green area bigger on purpose? PS: could you make a video on the differences beach vs indoor regarding rules? Like in beach you have to both receive and attack a certain way or in beach you can step on enemy's territory under the net

one adjustment that I'm still struggling the most with is the fact that you cannot open hand receive in order to adjust for that do you guys just focus on good footwork to make sure you can always dig the ball when receiving?

I have an idea for a video. I am struggling a lot with tight sets from my partner. What are solutions for me? Tooling? Pushing into the block? Poking past? Shooting over?
